Judging from Merton's joke and the way the others reacted to it, I'd guess he wasn't exactly well liked by his fellow cast members either.

Got to understand that Paul and John never have liked each other and both despise working with each other. Pay close attention every time both John Sessions and Paul Merton are on together and you'll see the tension. But to talk bad about the other contestant like Paul did, is a little bit of a shock as you can see from Josie, Tony and Mike, plus Clive was a little bothered by it as well.

I really liked John and I think he was quite brilliant and entertaining.

But you are right, he was kind of pretentious and stole the spotlight a lot.

He is probably better suited to projects where he is the star, rather than a show like this where the focus is on team work and interaction.

IMHO I get the feeling a no-nonsense guy like Paul hated John Session's pretentious luvvie-actor flights of fancy . Sessions was also a very selfish performer, and never a team player with the rest of the cast, whereas Paul got along with pretty much everybody.

Sessions being kicked off the UK show for being a selfish arrogant arse was a great day for WLLIA, and the show got much better afterwards. :)

The reason Mike never did US Whose Line is because he apparently walked out in disgust when he heard they gotten rid of his good friend Tony Slattery from the last series of the UK show for supposedly unprofessional and unpredictable behaviour, when poor Tony was actually in the middle of a massive nervous breakdown. I always loved Mike for doing that.

Sessions might have been a genius - but he was a lousy team player on Whose Line. The guy was too selfish and arrogant by half, and just shouted over the top of anyone doing a scene with him rather than working with them like you're supposed to in improv. The other players hated him, as you can tell by their laughter at paul's hilarious comment.
