  • The pogues at there best love Shane McGowan puts everything into it

  • not to be listened when drunk, so effin sad song

  • This video you posted has the best sound of any of the other Pogues versions posted on You Tube. I am at work hitting replay, replay, replay...

  • Best version of this song. But all said and told - fuck war.

  • For the most part, yeah brilliant. But hes bloody tone deaf!

  • love the pogues this song mint....xxx

  • realy good

  • Hypnotic rendition. To those who would pass over this due to it being the 'Johnny O'Rotten version', don't. Let the honesty of Shane's voice punctuated by the entrancing bass and brass section make you ponder on what this is about.

  • I'm trying to comment on your Queen Victoria's funeral video and I can't. Why am I blocked, I don't even know you.

  • I don't allow any expletives / inapt comments on anything I've posted, sorry.

  • That's frankly absurd.

  • @Zebonka Cause it was an English desicion to kill the Aussies. You all can stick your whistles up your arse!!Check your history!!!

  • @aussieweedsmoka Hey! It not our fault. We weren't involved in the desicion.

  • This would bring tears to a glass eye. Shane really puts some emotion into it.

  • "Tears to a glass eye"... ;-) Any other good covers of this tune besides Tom Waites, Joan Baez, and this one?

Question: just WHAT is it about the tune, the theme, the lyrical content, the imagery of this song? All the vids I've seen associated with this song have been just incredible.

  • @bronxling

Another great rendition you might like is Ronnie Drew's. (R.I.P.) (of the Dubliners)

  • tink dis is d best version ever, used 2 sing it in d pub wit d brother back in ireland, in australia now, where's my bro i want 2 relive past glories.....

  • can't beat liam clancy's varsion

  • This version is lovely, but half sober sounds too good to be true...

    Thumbs up from Sweden.

  • i clicked on this video on accident and im glad i did now :)

  • the famines over go home

  • im gonna comment in the sense of the old land just forget about jonny turkey cos the land playrd waltzin maltida christ i whis i was dead but no more waltzin malatida for me

  • im a waltzing matilda

  • i am australian with a bit of an irish bias, so fucking hell this version kills it.

  • Best version by far. legend

  • Great tune!

But this song isn't the 'unofficial' anthem of Australia - that song is "Waltzing Matilda" (the tune that THIS song refers to).

This song - "And the band played waltzing Matilda" is an entirely different (though brilliant) song.

  • Excellent...but I still there's nothing better than Liam Clancy's version!

  • Nonsense! Do a bit more research and you'll find out how the Irish have Honoured their Fallen of the "Great War" and WWII. There were good reasons for the Irish to distrust and dislike the British and it wasn't just because of "Pure Hatred".

    Brilliant song, my favourite version!

  • if you dont like it, dont listen to it really Sherlock..

  • shane you are a great singer love u

  • Shane is the best at this version ....ty for postin darrin...much appreciated...sean.
