Hypnotic rendition. To those who would pass over this due to it being the 'Johnny O'Rotten version', don't. Let the honesty of Shane's voice punctuated by the entrancing bass and brass section make you ponder on what this is about.
"Tears to a glass eye"... ;-) Any other good covers of this tune besides Tom Waites, Joan Baez, and this one?
Question: just WHAT is it about the tune, the theme, the lyrical content, the imagery of this song? All the vids I've seen associated with this song have been just incredible.
tink dis is d best version ever, used 2 sing it in d pub wit d brother back in ireland, in australia now, where's my bro i want 2 relive past glories.....

This is the nearest the Irish could get to honouring their own dead who fought at Gallipolli, pure hatred of the British made sure that those heroes who went ashore at Suvla Bay were airbrushed into history. Not them all, my grandfather survived the carnage and we are all so proud of him, he was a "DUB". Fuck off Mcgowan and sing this song properly or not at all!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nonsense! Do a bit more research and you'll find out how the Irish have Honoured their Fallen of the "Great War" and WWII. There were good reasons for the Irish to distrust and dislike the British and it wasn't just because of "Pure Hatred".

Another great rendition you might like is Ronnie Drew's. (R.I.P.) (of the Dubliners)

Great tune!
But this song isn't the 'unofficial' anthem of Australia - that song is "Waltzing Matilda" (the tune that THIS song refers to).
This song - "And the band played waltzing Matilda" is an entirely different (though brilliant) song.

Excellent...but I still there's nothing better than Liam Clancy's version!
