One of the things not readily understood about the scenes in Morocco when Sebastian is deathly ill, is that when the series came out, most of us gays had friends in hospices everywhere that looked exactly as he did. It was heartbreakingly relevent, but seems to have gone over the heads of film critics everywhere.
This TV series came out in 1981. AIDS was only just starting to be identified in that year. Either the doctors were extremely slow and AIDS had been around for years, or you're getting your dates slightly wrong. AIDS had nothing to do with Waugh or the makers of the series- and didn't really coincide with the showing of the series for the first time. AIDS existed, but did not affect hundreds of thousands of people in 1981.
Hey @jazzhuman. I'm sorry but there's no question of Sebastien's deathly appearance going over the film critics' heads, as you put it. Sebastien isn't gay, and his relationship with the awful sponger, Kurt, is no more than: 'Two waifs coming together,' as Charles later describes it to Bridey.
The fact that gays have been going to get laid in places like Tangiers since the 1960's has no connection with the story at all.
"Why?" Sufficient characters not allowed on this board to even begin to describe his nastiness. It is well documented in several biographies. A wonderful writer but a wretched human being.
( I personally don't know him, never actually met him). But have you? I'm not contradicting you or anything like that, but do you know him well enough to be able to pass such a grim judgement?
Never met the man but, based on three biographies I've read, I'm glad of that. Don't you think we may " pass a grim judgement" based on credible documentation? I do appreciate your disinclination to rush to judgement on him. He was such a great writer, one wants to think well of him.
I want this video on my E6 unit.
