one of my favorite joe jackson songs. Look sharp! is definently one of the best debut albums ever. Top 30 at least. Joe Jackson needs to be respected and needs his recognition. I bet a bunch of people know the songs "is she really going out with him" or "one more time" and don't know that its by joe jackson. I bet if he gave the band a name they probably would be more popular and sucessful.
@SuperNolaguy He's still playing with Joe and has been since 1976! He also does a lot of session work, played with They Might be Giants for a while too.
Hi ! Really a cool video. BYE !
I remember seeing Joe at Emerald City in Cherry Hill, NJ in 1980. I wonder where this video was taken? I was a big fan, sill am. My bass player and I went to see this show, our band did a lot of Joe's tunes back then. What a great show he put on that night!

@evelynmh I think a lot of his negativity is towards the music biz - his autobiography "A cure for gravity" is a great read and sheds light on his complex personality. I was interested to learn that, like me he loves Shostakovich but hates the snobbery found in classical music circles. He is the high point of New Wave IMHO.
@popitinpete Yes, though the music biz is something of a straw man, no? A little too easy to knock down. His distaste for the business side is certainly hard-earned and 100% correct, though w/o it you and I never hear of J. Jax in the first place, so there's obviously somhing to be said for it, I should think. It's something of a well-worn theme with Joe, I sometimes feel, making me wish he'd give his mining an over-mined territory a bit of a rest.
Costello is a talent for sure, but not in the same league as Joe. Both are cool, but the musical genius and diversity of Joe is very rare in this world.
I have been a JJ fan for 25 years and believe that he may have given us his best already.....but I love him all the same. He is a treasure.......
Oh, man! This is so cool to see! I didn't get to see Joe live, until he had moved away from his punk days (not that his later stuff isn't great, but I sure would've loved to see back in 1979/1980!!!
This is one of the few albums I've owned on 8-track, cassette & CD over the years, and I wore them OUT! Every track on I'm the Man is a 10, top notch!!!
it's a draw. I can't decide. Neither have any deficiencies in their respective songwriting or musical talents. OK Jackson is a virtuoso pianist compared to EC as a guitarist, but both bands fucking cook with napalm on any given night! Let's just be glad they are both still around and still producing great music. especially in this day and age.
Just when I gain an appreciation of a musical artist's work, I find out they have just passed on.
I'm very glad I got to see blues man Junior Wells at the House Of Blues Hollywood. A great album is Better Off With The Blues. Some songs may you dance, others make you cry.
well the good news is both JJ and EC are very much still with us and show no signs of letting up anytime soon. I was lucky enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and Frank Zappa before they both died. Rory Gallagher, I'm sad to say i missed as soon as i discovered him, but then seeing him in the States especially towards the end was near impossible. I don't think he played in the U.S. after '91 or so, and not in my area that's for sure.

Historically, Costello was the better lyricist and Jackson the better musician. But I think both have become pretty well-rounded as the years have gone on.
@DancingSpiderman A draw. Neither is better or worse outside someone's personal taste. BOTH are brilliant and the last of the great singer songwriters in the contemporary Rock/Pop genre. Back when there was still one worth listening to. 30 years is a long ways back, but at least they're still with us putting out solid music for the faithful. I'm still here too with both ears open.
@DancingSpiderman Sure, they're both very good musicians, but I tend to be more of a Joe Jackson admirer (I avoid the term fan). Next wednesday (on my b-day) I get to see Joe playing live again in Paradiso (Amsterdam) so I'm in a Jackson mood these days.
@DancingSpiderman As always, Joe delivered a solid performance. He started off on his own with 'Different for girls'. After that Graham Maybe (Bass) and Dave Houghton (Drums) appeared on stage. They played a good combination of the old stuff and some of the newer songs (no new stuff as in unreleased). He did a very nice version of 'Down To London' with just him on piano and Dave on drums (he noted that the song was originally recorded with a 16 piece band). Only Joe can do such a thing.
He also did a cover of a Ian Dury song (I think it was 'Itinerant Child').
The last song (before the encore) was a very lively rendering of 'Got The Time', where Graham set his bass on fire with his fast action play. Brilliant performance;the crowd went mad! Graham was particulary 'wild'; usually he is a bit laid back and modest, but now he was in a good mood and enjoying himself.
@DancingSpiderman You should read this short review in reverse order. This is part 3.
I did this on Last fm, but I can't seem to put in a link to that so I copied it. Hope you enjoy it. I certainly enjoyed the concert!
Joe made a bit of fun of him by commenting on his singing (can't remember what song), which was beautiful by the way. He closed the encore with 'Steppin Out'.
@MikePhilippens That's just awesome Mike ! See that's what I like about concerts that we don't see on the music production company released music videos, the spontaneity of individual band members. And to have an excellent performance by just the core intimate group, each performance different than the next one.
Thanks for the review Mike ! You had a great time there.
@rekkof Yeah, Elvis is still making great music, and he's married to Diana Krall , who is a honie.
But I still enjoy both Elvis and Joe, and I can't really choose one over the other. So I enjoy the YourTube community to tell me who would win the Celebrity DeathMatch. Thanks, rekkof for your vote. Have yourself a great Friday evening.
awesome fantastic! thanks for postin jj rocked and will always rock im an old fart at 49 and this stuff gets me goin like epineferin whooooo hoooa! thanks again stuka man
Dam ! This stuff realy kicks ! Joe's an awesome songwriter, performer ,and his band smokes! I am a drummer who is influenced by it all , I try to absorb it all in like a sponge! So much to learn from so many great players! DAVE HOUGHTON is one such drummer in my book ! Simply fantastic !
Great! - yes Joe doesn't get the credit for what he's done musically that he should. I've even seen Anthrax cover one of his songs. This is what YouTube is about...finding live footage of awesome music like this.
I love this musician, he was amazing in live! Great jazzmann, he writes for so many other artists :D I saw him twice and he sent me his scarf from the stage lol! Thanks for the video.
Kids at a college in Great Britain - they had no idea what they were seeing, or they were stunned. I used to have a complete show from this tour on cassette (off a radio broadcast). I also had a tape of The Clash at The Agora Ballroom in Atlanta on their first American tour (London Calling)... raw as hell and great, and The Gang of Four (original band) board tape at Tyrone's OC in Athens Georgia. I miss them all... I had other bootleg, mixing board, and radio recordings, but these were the best!
Yeah!!!!! Seeing this made my whole weekend!! And not just cuz it's friday!!! :-) Joe Jackson is sadly under-appreciated! At least here in the states. What about in Britain? Anyone?
under-appreciated or under-promoted? My only J.J. CD that I've had for years is Night and Day, but until recently, I had no idea Joe Jackson was this good...
People seem to overlook the guitar player because it's not out front, but I LUV his style. It's like pop/fusion, punk/disco...or something like that. Steely Dan on ephedrine.
Thanks so much - have only gotten to see Joe & Graham & Gary & Dave do this one time live - and since they are now touring without Gary it may never happen again. Very happy to have this record of the JJB doing one of my favorite songs.
When I first heard, "Is she really going out with him", I was hooked. His music spoke to me as if I had verbalized my feelings to him and he put it to music. The quality of his band made it that much better. I still think some of the bass lines in his songs are the best ever. Joe Jackson's music will always be a sound track to my life.
It's been going like this so long, most people don't know the difference. The problem is the music "Industry".
In '78 radio wouldn't play punk or new wave music because they didn't know how to CONTROL it.
There are some bands making great music - but the Industry sells what it can control: Third-rate rap and hip hop bafoons, with their crude language and ignorant rants.
The Record Industry and Big Radio loves exploiting these 21st century Stepin Fetchits - so nothing changes.
How can you not get up and move to this song?

@DancingSpiderman
Lyrically, Costello would edge it. Musically, Jackson would win.

@KaitainCPS Wow, good call ! Thanx.

@DancingSpiderman Are you kidding me? I love Joe but come on...Elvis would kick his ass! And is still making great music nough said!
rekkof 10 months ago
@rekkof Yeah, Elvis is still making great music, and he's married to Diana Krall , who is a honie.
But I still enjoy both Elvis and Joe, and I can't really choose one over the other. So I enjoy the YourTube community to tell me who would win the Celebrity DeathMatch. Thanks, rekkof for your vote. Have yourself a great Friday evening.

I am sorry for the mistakes on my last comment but, when I hear this song on my local radio station, I feel like I am going home.

I hear this on my local radio station, every Friday at work. I have not lot no opprotunities of hearing this song.

Dam ! This stuff realy kicks ! Joe's an awesome songwriter, performer ,and his band smokes! I am a drummer who is influenced by it all , I try to absorb it all in like a sponge! So much to learn from so many great players! DAVE HOUGHTON is one such drummer in my book ! Simply fantastic !
gyro62 3 years ago 6
Dave's also one of my early rock influences.
techathens 3 years ago 2
Dave Houghton is SUCH a great drummer - and combined with the genius that is Graham Maby, they are one of THE rhythm sections EVER.
Do you have the rest of the gig?

Great! - yes Joe doesn't get the credit for what he's done musically that he should. I've even seen Anthrax cover one of his songs. This is what YouTube is about...finding live footage of awesome music like this.

Ross, thats nuts cause when I hear a drummer knock some thing out,and I cant do it to the note it kills me.keep trying....Always keep rocking!!!

I wish they would show the guitar player close up playing the beginning. To this day, I can't figure out how to play that right.

Some great early JJ!!! Thanks for uploading this. Wow! Is more of this concert available?
cutis1000 4 years ago 2
judging by the videos I have seen on You Tube from this era, I think Graham Maby the bass player wore the same white trousers every day for 2 years

I had other bootleg, mixing board, and radio recordings, but these were the best!
techathens 4 years ago
Yeah!!!!! Seeing this made my whole weekend!! And not just cuz it's friday!!! :-) Joe Jackson is sadly under-appreciated! At least here in the states. What about in Britain? Anyone?
Nigelxman 4 years ago 3
under-appreciated or under-promoted? My only J.J. CD that I've had for years is Night and Day, but until recently, I had no idea Joe Jackson was this good...

Graham Maby = The Master!!

People seem to overlook the guitar player because it's not out front, but I LUV his style. It's like pop/fusion, punk/disco...or something like that. Steely Dan on ephedrine.

Wow,27 years later and this song is still AMAZING!

Joe Jackson's music will always be a sound track to my life.

once you crack in...you'll take any 'music' shit right ?
JohnEpi1973 4 years ago
wow this is proof that most of today's generation of pop musicians have forgotten how to write good songs.
Zoeler 4 years ago 2
what went wroong... with music today in general?
JohnEpi1973 4 years ago
It's been going like this so long, most people don't know the difference. The problem is the music "Industry".
In '78 radio wouldn't play punk or new wave music because they didn't know how to CONTROL it.
There are some bands making great music - but the Industry sells what it can control: Third-rate rap and hip hop bafoons, with their crude language and ignorant rants.
The Record Industry and Big Radio loves exploiting these 21st century Stepin Fetchits - so nothing changes.
