Imagine if you will, a door that leads to a different location each day. One day, it leads to imagination. The next, it might lead to dress up. Chances are, you've found:
TVO used to show a lot of excellent kids' shows including "Write On" I wrote them a few years back and they say that it would cost them too much money to acquire the rights the rerun them.
I also grew up in Metro Detroit, and it is so strange to me to this day how many people outside this area are not familiar with Canadian television. I learned French by watching Sesame Street, while the rest of the country was learning Spanish!
Wow watching this takes me back away from my high pressure job with the government and dr's and death and sickness to a really safe place at home at the edge of my mothers bed while my dad was at work. That safe place.
I don't even live in either US or Canada but I used to watch this when I was a little kid! I loved it so much, I even bought polka-dot slippers just to remind me of this. <3 Such memories~
OH. MY. GOD. I had completely forgotten about this treasure... damned if I wasn't singing right along as though I hadn't missed a beat in 30 years!! WOW.
This may sound silly, but out of all the episodes they made of this show. For some reason this epasode appears more than any other why do you think that is?
For the longest time i thought it was call poka dot shorts :| now i know it isnt. Kinda sad that i never knew the true name of my favourite childhood show till now. Im disapointed in myself

Wasn't just ontario TV...in Detroit area we got all the good shows too on our local CBC station. Friendly Giant, Oopsy the Clown (my favorite)...loved 'em all :)
@bakemal I actually looked it up after and it can be pronounced either with or without the "l." I've just never heard it pronounced with the "l" before.
Reminds me of that privileged time of being a care-free kid... I look back at my childhood and it was a very happy one... Until testosterone kicked in. UGH! :)
When you read about kids in junkie families, abused, child soldiers, have terrible child diseases, etc., I tell myself that holy shift, I was among the luckiest ones on Earth!
I met Denis Simpson at his show of Ain't Misbehavin in Vancouver. I was so excited after I was like dude you were awesome and I watched you like everyday on the Poka dot door. It was awesome.
indeed, RIP Denis.....you and the gang there made it easy for me and my wife to put our kids in front of the tv.........
...and graduating on to shows like Today's Special, I can say we parents were very happy with the shows offered 'in the day' for our young kids'..theyve grown to be very responsidble young women and for that we thank all of you for the roles you played.
Again, Godspeed to Denis' family and friends,,,he had a wonderful touch, as he did with all he got into on stage.
Grew up in Detroit and watched all these shows on channel 9, "the Canadien channel," out of Windsor. I loved these shows. Mr. Dressup was my favorite one.
Pretty Cool. We get the Windsor Affiliate of CBC (CBET) here in Detroit, and I'd watch shows such as this, as well as Mr. Dressup , Canadian Sesame Street, as it was known at the time (where I learned some basic French from as a kid!), and other shows when I was a kid

So, I realized when I was around 17 the reason the male host never, never met Polkaroo. I thought he was smoking or getting coffee later on in life. I never connected... that he was Polkaroo.
As I child I felt sorry for him -- man, why do you always miss him?
Nowadays, I think Polkaroo wanted to get with the female host and waited until the guy left. ;)
I can never forget, and will never forget these good old TVO children's Shows. I used to watch this every week night at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time on TVO.
I so loved Polka Dot Door as a little kid. :) Then there was always the day when you finally figured out that Polkaroo was the guy that "just missed him? Again?!!" lol Although there was one day that it was the chick. She was way taller than the guy.
I swear I've had this running through my head for a week straight. Kept humming it at the bank during a complicated transaction, the teller kept giving me looks.
I liked a lot of the children's programming back in the 80's. Square One TV, 321 Contact, Reading Rainbow, Owl TV, Readalong Gang, Today's Special ... I pretty much watched all the PBS and TVOntario shows as a kid. I miss those days ...
I was too young to understand the whole ... polkaroo thing. Like, how polkaroo is really one of the hosts. I just figured that when the host came back, he was just really unlucky all the time to miss meeting polkaroo.
I wish kids were still innocent enough to enjoy shows like this, the way we did, not so long ago as children. Now our kids are educated by media, pop culture and the internet, and nothing entertains them anymore. Working with middleschoolers today is saddening.
I probably haven't seen this since 30 years ago when I was a little kid. It's funny how seeing it now, it's as if I just saw it yesterday! Thanks for uploading it.
i live in the U.S. and i remember this show.. although, i grew up in Michigan, so maybe I got it only cause I was close to CA? eh.. anyway i liked it when i was like... 5 or so!
There was nothing like growing up in Ontario in the 70's and early 80's and watching the amazing shows on TVO. Those were the days you could actually learn something on Tv.
