  • I used to jump up and down and scream in delight when it was Animal Day !

  • Imagine if you will, a door that leads to a different location each day. One day, it leads to imagination. The next, it might lead to dress up. Chances are, you've found:

    The Polka Dot Door

  • Now try and tell me television is not a gateway drug :)

  • TVO used to show a lot of excellent kids' shows including "Write On" I wrote them a few years back and they say that it would cost them too much money to acquire the rights the rerun them.

  • I wish this was still on so I could share it with my kids! I watched this show all the time..I remember it would be on weeknights at 6..

  • I am 39 years old and I watched Polka Dot Door in the summer time when I was a kid Here were the days they had

    Monday: Treasure Day

    Tuesday Dress-Up Day

    Wednesday: ANimal Day

    Thursday: Imagination Day

    Friday Finding Out Day

  • I misread the title as "immigration day" lol

  • I wonder if the polka dot door is a gate to another dimension.

  • mmmkayyy

  • I also grew up in Metro Detroit, and it is so strange to me to this day how many people outside this area are not familiar with Canadian television. I learned French by watching Sesame Street, while the rest of the country was learning Spanish!

  • Animal Day was the bomb.

  • wow I used to watch this all the time back in 1985. Oh to be a kid again lol

  • Fuck Im old

  • I remember this as a child in the late 70s my very favorite episodes was only when poker a roo would make a rear cameo then i was happy

  • im 15. i remember seeing this at midnight when i was 4

  • ahhh just needed my fix. thanks

  • thanks for posting, I miss my youth.

  • I always hated it when the male co-host always missed polka-roo!

  • aww thoose were the days i miss this show

  • i used to watched this every day........loved it then, sure miss those days.....

  • Wow watching this takes me back away from my high pressure job with the government and dr's and death and sickness to a really safe place at home at the edge of my mothers bed while my dad was at work. That safe place.

  • I used to get so excited whenever they said 'Imagination day'! it was my favorite!

  • I loved Animal Day !

  • I don't even live in either US or Canada but I used to watch this when I was a little kid! I loved it so much, I even bought polka-dot slippers just to remind me of this. <3 Such memories~

  • imagination day was always the best

  • OH. MY. GOD. I had completely forgotten about this treasure... damned if I wasn't singing right along as though I hadn't missed a beat in 30 years!! WOW.

  • I remember watching this on the candian channel.

  • person responsible for this was def a LSD user

  • I knew people who were afraid of Polkaroo. No idea why they would be afraid of his awesome stealth abilities.

  • @Abolisher1 hahahah too funny yes very stealthy

  • This may sound silly, but out of all the episodes they made of this show. For some reason this epasode appears more than any other why do you think that is?

  • yay!! my show!

  • These shows are childhood treasures. <3

  • For the longest time i thought it was call poka dot shorts :| now i know it isnt. Kinda sad that i never knew the true name of my favourite childhood show till now. Im disapointed in myself

  • @cousins4ever1 There was a show called that too!

  • The Polkaroo?!?!? I missed him again?!?!?

  • Oh my gosh when I was 5 and under I watched this show on TVO back then they should reair this show again too.

  • oh my.... another hit show... i really feel old now

  • nostalgia!!!! Love it

  • ahhh, I'm in, man.

  • hey HEY hey!!

  • look waaaaaaaaaaay up and i'll call rusty <3

tv shows used to be so simple and cute, none of this in your face, overly animated and fake personalities!! i miss oldschool kids shows!!

thank you so much for posting this, cant wait to show my 3 yr old :)

  • This part used to trip me out so bad maaan.

  • i was 7 years old ... good old memories !!

  • wow i use to watch this when i first came to Canada back in 89

  • Wasn't just ontario TV...in Detroit area we got all the good shows too on our local CBC station. Friendly Giant, Oopsy the Clown (my favorite)...loved 'em all :)

  • Its amazing after all these years I still can sing to the lyrcis of the song.

  • What the hell?

  • lol she's pronouncing the "l" in "polka dot"

  • @Lulz That's how it is pronounced

  • @bakemal I actually looked it up after and it can be pronounced either with or without the "l." I've just never heard it pronounced with the "l" before.

  • Ah, the PDD... (^_^)

Reminds me of that privileged time of being a care-free kid... I look back at my childhood and it was a very happy one... Until testosterone kicked in. UGH! :)

When you read about kids in junkie families, abused, child soldiers, have terrible child diseases, etc., I tell myself that holy shift, I was among the luckiest ones on Earth!

  • Woah....childhood flashback.....

  • I met Denis Simpson at his show of Ain't Misbehavin in Vancouver. I was so excited after I was like dude you were awesome and I watched you like everyday on the Poka dot door. It was awesome.

  • @slimswayzes TVO Rocked!

    The Poka Dot Door

    Todays Special

    Doctor Who

    Doctor Snuggles

Sharon Lois and Bram the elephant show

    The Little Prince

    Belle and Sebastian

    I miss the 80's

  • @NormanL75. Fables Of The Green Forest and Readalong.

  • yeah i remember the polka dot door , Todays Special , TvO One of the BEST channels to grow up watching as a child! STILL has GREAT TRUTH on it!

check out my new internet radio station if u like always supporting independent media and truth slimswayzedotcom

  • Hello crap, I'd forgotten all about this show

  • i watched this to kill time, it was not my favorite but better than watching the news when your a kid. i think it was on @ 6pm on tv ontario.

  • Another awesome canadian kids show from the 80's (or at least I THINK it was canadian) was the Elephant Show!!

  • aw RIP Denis simpson <3

I used to see him on the skytrain on my way to work in Vancouver, and I KNEW I knew him from somewhere, crazyness

  • indeed, RIP Denis.....you and the gang there made it easy for me and my wife to put our kids in front of the tv.........

...and graduating on to shows like Today's Special, I can say we parents were very happy with the shows offered 'in the day' for our young kids'..theyve grown to be very responsidble young women and for that we thank all of you for the roles you played.

Again, Godspeed to Denis' family and friends,,,he had a wonderful touch, as he did with all he got into on stage.

    jim

  • RIP Denis Simpson......

  • Grew up in Detroit and watched all these shows on channel 9, "the Canadien channel," out of Windsor. I loved these shows. Mr. Dressup was my favorite one.

  • @tomcat13claws

    Lucky.

  • Pretty Cool. We got the Windsor Affiliate of CBC (CBET) here in Detroit, and I'd watch shows such as this, as well as Mr. Dressup , Canadian Sesame Street, as it was known at the time (where I learned some basic French from as a kid!), and other shows when I was a kid.

  • MEMORIES!! lol. :D

  • So, I realized when I was around 17 the reason the male host never, never met Polkaroo. I thought he was smoking or getting coffee later on in life. I never connected... that he was Polkaroo.

As I child I felt sorry for him -- man, why do you always miss him?

Nowadays, I think Polkaroo wanted to get with the female host and waited until the guy left. ;)

  • Wow. I haven't seen this since I was like 6. I still adore it.

  • I watch this down here in Georgia, and just have to say, I wanna Polka Dot Door :)

  • "...and case are for the pulpit god way"???

lol, you guys should put on the CC!

  • @theeuprise

well, maybe God has a polka-dot door.

  • I was born in Detroit but most of my children's TV shows were Canadian.

I knew the Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup were, but I guess I just learned that this was too.

  • watch it with the CC on. its funny.

  • ITA - Treasure Day was the best!

  • oh man i miss this show! they need to put this out on dvd

  • It's a shame that today's children's progaming isn''t as good as it was back in the 80's

  • I miss the old shows, I hate hearing Hannah Montanah every single day

  • I can never forget, and will never forget these good old TVO children's Shows. I used to watch this every week night at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time on TVO.

  • I am 43 i grew up with this show

  • Classic. I'm now 27 and can sing this song without missing a beat.

  • Good times, but this song kinda scares me now hehe...

  • I so loved Polka Dot Door as a little kid. :) Then there was always the day when you finally figured out that Polkaroo was the guy that "just missed him? Again?!!" lol Although there was one day that it was the chick. She was way taller than the guy.

  • I swear I've had this running through my head for a week straight. Kept humming it at the bank during a complicated transaction, the teller kept giving me looks.

  • Ah the longing to be a kid and do life all over again. Nostalgia how I loath the way you tease me!

  • wow thats old school PBS right there...I used to watch this on either channel 9 or 56 in Detroit

  • i used to love this show

  • My childhood, right there.

  • I liked a lot of the children's programming back in the 80's. Square One TV, 321 Contact, Reading Rainbow, Owl TV, Readalong Gang, Today's Special ... I pretty much watched all the PBS and TVOntario shows as a kid. I miss those days ...

  • I was too young to understand the whole ... polkaroo thing. Like, how polkaroo is really one of the hosts. I just figured that when the host came back, he was just really unlucky all the time to miss meeting polkaroo.

  • very nice;))

  • polkaroo was such a jokester <3

  • ha ha not as much fun as Treasure Day !!!

  • ohh myyy gaaawd,my favourite shooow is on!! this takes me back when i was just a baby jew

  • I'm from Detroit and I watched this everyday there as a child. Along with Fred Penner, Mr. Dressup, Seseme Park, and Polka Dot Shorts

  • Yeah it kind of like a tie between PBS and CBC on who had the better kids shows. Good ol' channel 9!

  • @gariiman I grew up in Detroit too and probably watched more Canadian kids programming than US

  • @whirljackman This was on TV in New Orleans, too...

  • @gariiman WORD...

  • I wish kids were still innocent enough to enjoy shows like this, the way we did, not so long ago as children. Now our kids are educated by media, pop culture and the internet, and nothing entertains them anymore. Working with middleschoolers today is saddening.

  • i still remember all the words to this song. I must have been 3 or 4 when I watched this. I am 32 now. thanks for the upload!!!!

  • @beanerreytor I grew up too in the 70s in southern ontario!! For me its was the greatest place and time in the world, real fond memories:)

  • I probably haven't seen this since 30 years ago when I was a little kid. It's funny how seeing it now, it's as if I just saw it yesterday! Thanks for uploading it.

  • Her voice sounds similar to Judy Collins.

  • I had a crush on that lady when I was a little kid XD

  • Bonitos recuerdos de cuando tenía 7 añitos cuando vivía en Canadá.

  • thanks for uploading this

  • salvia

  • It was neat. I never watched it in my extreme youth but looked on with younger kids.

  • I HATED this show as a kid, lol. But I have to admit, now that I am older... I can see the appeal of it.

  • i live in the U.S. and i remember this show.. although, i grew up in Michigan, so maybe I got it only cause I was close to CA? eh.. anyway i liked it when i was like... 5 or so!

  • yeah Michigan is close to the border of Ontario, Canada.

  • So's Washington. this show bored the crap out of me!

  • hey Leave polka dot shorts alone

  • WAY better than the fuckin polka dot shorts!!

  • I hated this show when I was small, TERRIBLE.

  • There was nothing like growing up in Ontario in the 70's and early 80's and watching the amazing shows on TVO. Those were the days you could actually learn something on Tv.

  • @bluenotejazz that is what I miss, I have no idea what my brother is watching these days.

  • @bluenotejazz AMEN !!!!!! when i watch these old clips i get the happiest memories of me any my brother side byside on the floor watching ploka dot door, todays special, mr dressup, romper room.... and lots more !!

  • @mattpavelich1 I completely forgot about romper room until just now!! lol!

  • @bluenotejazz Or in Quebec with parents who recognized good kid programming!

  • @bluenotejazz beanerreytor I grew up too in the 70s in southern ontario!! For me its was the greatest place and time in the world, real fond memories

  • @bravebelt67 I watched it growing up all the way down in Kentucky. Found memories.

  • @bluenotejazz The cartoons and the shows of the late 80s were very popular in the early 90s for children as well. This went on till about 1996, then they revamped everything and stuff started to change fast. Now everything is garbage. I miss these old times.

  • I am SO glad to see this! NO ONE I try to talk to about this remembers it! :o)

  • I LOVED Imagination Day!!!!! XD

  • i miss those days where i used to watch these shows all day :'(

  • Oh how i loved this show!

  • OMG this was my FAVORITE show when I was a little kid, I have always tried to tell people about it but they didn't remember it and even had me almost convinced it wasn't even real..lol So glad there is proof now!

  • Damn this takes me back !

  • Wow, this is very awakening! Looking back at how everything was, and how everything is now.....memerories..... this was my life......(not saying i dont have one but i used to watch this alot) ;)

  • seems like kid's shows in our younger years were mostly about imagination, and teaching how to be a good person

  • Now, THIS is classic! A huge part of my childhood. Even now, years later, Story-Time Mouse is STILL my favorite thing on this show! Too bad they don't air the re-runs anymore.

  • everyone in my family, relatives and even friends of ours use to call my dad polkaroo cause he'd be there one minute and gone the next. . . .

  • Wow! I'm glad we grew up with many different shows that benefits us as children... now a days it's different. *sigh* Memories.

  • memories!!!!!!!!!!

  • i use to watch this show when i was a little girl back in the late 70's and early 80's on the canadian french station right after sesemae street!

  • i cant believe i forgot all about this shooow, it was one of my favourtie shows! <3 :D

  • i forgot all about this show I love it. How can I have forgoten it. I loved polkaroo.

  • OMG I totally had forgotten about this show!

  • me to classic stuff

  • I remember this! WMVS - Channel 10 in Milwaukee showed it. We got a lot of TVOntario kids shows in the 70s-80s.

  • Glad to hear that a PBS station had such good taste in Canadian shows.

  • it was ALWAYS imagination fucking day. I got so mad sometimes... GRRR

  • Friday was always Animal Day. That was my favourite.

  • i miss polka dot door!!!

  • Polkaroo was here and I missed him?! Ah man...

  • Holy Cow! Memories from childhood in Niagara Falls NY, where we watched as much Canadian TV as we did Buffalo stations... ah, the old days of the rotary antenna, lol

  • wow yeah i had the antenna too.for buffalo,ny i use to watch this every night at 6pm after sesame street!

  • I used to love this show.

We'd get it on CBET-Windsor in Detroit.

  • Omg!Me too.I used to love this.Detroit had the best kids tv.

  • ahh man i love this when i was a kid we wold wach it in school on k.e.t

  • awesome!

  • Useless fact: Polka-Dot Door was a Canadian adaptation of an Australian kids show known as PlaySchool.

The big difference is that there were two bears, Big Ted and Little Ted, and only one egg. Known as Humpty Dumpty.

  • OMG! I used to watch this when I was a wee child. For some reason I thought it was called the polka dot door. Ahhhh...memories

  • PlaySchool was originally a British children's show that was adapted for Australian TV a couple years later.

  • This and mr. dress-up were my most favorite children's shows of all time.

  • The Modern Rock Door,

    The MOdern Rock Door

Lets all go thru the Modern Rock Door

With Garner Andrews and so much more

    Can you guess...

What's behind the Modern Rock Door?

NOW I finally rem where that comes from, and shame shame, cause I used to watch this show...

  • My kids wouldn't watch Imagination Day, because the Polkaroo character scared the heck out of them!

  • I was scared of Polkaroo too! It seems that a lot of kids were, I guess they didn't think him through well enough.

  • Between Polka Dot Door, Today's Special and Mr. Dressup Canada had the BEST children's TV shows

  • Yes, indeedy. Forever and for always, we will always have the best children's shows of this generation-and the next!!

  • @redwolf2k

    Never forget Camp Cariboo!

  • this was my fav show

  • it is not

  • this is beyond crazy wako and la la la la
