hey, i watched the video in its entirety and found it really interresting. i also glad to know that all the girls in utah aren't forced into the inhumane religion of mormons. i'm not a religious person but i do believe in something "greater".
stopped at3:51 : i do not like the term 'minority" nor do i view myself that way. also, i do not want people of color to become dominant. i just want people to judge a person's character and not judge them by their preconceived ideas.
Im a Sociology grad (mixed w/ phil/psych) I felt the same way you did in finding my niche..Im still constantly analyzing and dissecting the very concept of identity & it doesnt get any easier...The saying "how far down the rabbit hole do you wanna go?" is true when trying to understand the human psyche, let alone in relation to their cultural context...so as the oracle in Delphi says: "Know thy self" - or rather - analyze urself...only then can you truly understand others.
I know that u posted this while ago but I thought I would let you know that you seem really intellegent and insightful.. You have really good views on the world... Oh and ur very attractive :)
thanks for posting this. it's really important to get this information out. your discussion of privilege reminded me me of an article i've read twice (once in my sociology class and another time in my women's studies class - both in university) by peggy mcintosh called white privilege: unpacking the invisible knapsack... assuming you haven't already read it. i just thought i would share :)
It is great to see you thinking beyond your class requirements, applying ideas and concepts you are exposed to in your classroom outside in everyday life.
I have struggled my identity and all my life. I live in sw Virginia, which is in the bible belt. People around here r very old- school and conservative. When I came out as a lesbian, people disappeared from my life. Then, I realized I was trans, it only got worse.
I live in SW VA too and feel your pain. I'm not trans nor am I out yet so I don't know exactly what you're going through but just know we're not all bad in this area and it will get better. :)
The Soc. classes I took as an undergrad were some of the most interesting of my entire education. One of the best books on race and it's effects on class is Jay MacLeod's Ain't No Makin' It. Really interesting case study of a neighborhood - very readable. I've made a point to learn all I can about LDS and to speak openly and frankly with LDS members I work with and meet. Perhaps you should take a Temple tour? Is it open to the public? Might be enlightening. :-)
Ooh sociology? I've been thinking about that too, although I'm starting college next year so I'm still not sure yet. Do you know how you're going to apply it to a career?
I suppose i've been lucky that i havent encountered a lot of racism in my life, but it is hard when your friends 'slip up', and it just shows you that racism still does exist even though people say they're 'colour blind'.
Thanks so much for your input. Its definently true. Since I've been taking this class its unbelievable how much prejudice I notice and how many more things offend me now. Haha. Which I guess is the downside of being a sociologist, but also very nessicary.
i agree, most people believe in "equality" but racism still exists because every person has a different definition of equality and what it means to them. it's a hard thing to eliminate when not everyone is on the same level.
racism will 4ever be. its just something some ppl cant get over, its weird. to me every1 is equal and i find it kinda hard to hate ppl, its just me. we r all individual, ppl should accept that :) sadly some ppl dont.
I really enjoy watching your videos. You almost always have something intellectual to say, and your remarks get me to see the world a little different.
Cute

Yea, where you live can make such an impact on how you feel about yourself and your well-being.
I wish that every state had a "San Francisco" *sigh*

Thanks for the suggestion, Mallory! I'll definently check that out! I've been looking for an enlightening read :)
I had some missionaries invite me for a tour and I said I'd love to when I have the time.

Thats a good question, haha ;)
I'm not sure yet, but I might take a business minor in Marketing because Sociology degrees are quite useful in that area.
For now, I just love learning.

Color blindness is a myth. Only by learning about diffrent cultures can we truly accept others who are diffrent :)
