  • would the song in these clips be the theme from Local Hero by mark Knopfler ... cause it sure sounds alot like it

  • @TheMysterio01 Yes it is! Just watched the dvd recently

  • Not gonna happen laddie. I created HET.. and I know far more about it than you can possibly imagine..

  • Actually they are in the custody of a group known as Historic Electric Traction. Sadly, they don't seem very interested in running them and would rather just have sunday afternoon picnics.

  • lived in Sydney's west 1985 to 87, I can dig it even though I've been in WA last 25 years. Run like hell and jump into the open door!

  • I had gone to Everleigh workshops the same year as this was filmed and have some photos of these old trains, one being of interest is a photo of a parcel van that appears to have had met grief, the underside at one end of the carriage has been pulled forward away from the carriage and the front is totally ruined. It would be interesting to see if anyone knows what happened to the train to end up this way.

  • 4:20 NO! What are they doing!?!

  • i use to ride these red rattlers all over Sydney and even when i was going to school

it is sad to see them go i remember standing at the station you know when the red rattlers were coming you could hear them coming from miles away before you even see them rip red rattlers you will be miss thanks for your years of service

  • @gmaher1959 Head down to the west towards cambeltown , then youll see em hit over 100 easily , their rolling speed was faster than the engine :P

  • lol i miss the swoosh of the power poles as you hung your head out the window or door to see where the front of the train was lol

  • Sad to see that,l worked on the old electric trains in the UK,and they've all gone that same way, thanks to paranoid polichickens and health'n'safety nazis.

  • should of sold them to india instead of scrappin them

  • what year where the redbirds made?

  • awesome footage. love the graff, used to love riding these trains. Seemed like there was alot of actual art on them back then too. =)

  • Ingleburn is as 8:20.. I'd know that railbridge and KFC anywhere :P

  • from 8:45 you can see there heading Sydney Bound Through Kingwood , (those billboards and shops still havent changed along the Great western highway)

it's a sad way to See Sydney's history Go

  • it's really sad that the fate of the trains in the abandoned Eveleigh Maintenance Centre (Platfrom 1 side) ended up with the claw.

the L,R & S Sets are set to be scrapped next year, in MainTrain in Auburn, or Sims Metal Recyling Plant in St. Marys/Dunheved.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THE L, R & S Sets being scrapped. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THEM.

  • well not exactly next year but around 2011, 2012 when the A sets fully come into service

  • What are they? Are they the silver double deckers? They were always heaps better in the 80's when I was a kid

  • Are you joking. The red Rattlers are the best. Alright. Just dont say anything about the S sets. OK.

  • That goes for the L, R sets to!

  • yeah but there behind a razor wie fence now n there onli a cupl

  • Is that place by redfern?

  • Yes

  • Yes, In the Abondoned Eveleigh Maintenance Centre on the Platform 1 side of Redfern Station, only one Red Rattler Lives on there, connected to a Y Set.

  • I bought a model of this at the end of last year via Bergs' at Parramatta. Spent 10 years at least waiting for them to be re-released. Im pleased to say that power cars C7516 and C7485 live on, as do trailer cars T4561 and T4620- in H.O form! Only problem is that the model runs really smoothly with barely a sound, unlike the real thing!

  • H.O You Say? mmmmmm

  • Yeah, agreed. I call em Rusty Old Trains.

That is until you put the pan up, Put it on a track, Hit the Go lever,Stand by the door and ride 50 tons of screaming steel down the track at 110kph. I guess for someone who hasnt done that (and lest face it, these things have been off the track now for 16 years) there can be no attachment.

  • I am 16, and love the things. Much better than the prisons on wheels that are today trains... (for the record, I if at all possible try to avoid going into the tunnels in a Tangara...)

I would give anything to have access to one of these things...

Even friends of mine who have no interest in trains say they are "pretty cool"

BTW, the commenter is 26 years old and lives in the UK, which may explain somthing..

  • @rulestherails Actually, you can!!

The Sydney Electric Train Society & Historic Electric Traction are both restoring a good number of red cars for future mainline operations. You can become a volunteer with either or both of these societies...both with one goal:

To preserve & restore the vintage electric rollingstock back to the mainline.

Check out their websites & be surprised!!

  • @zordmaker You have a chance to ride'em again.

There's some cars being restored for mainline operations & currently there are volunteer crews willing to be trained to drive them. Historic Electric Traction is gearing up now to accept new volunteer recruits & probably within 2-3 years, the return of the Red Rattler will beckon a new tourist travel for Sydney.

  • The great thing about them was you could throw people like yourself out the door as the train flew down the line....

  • I was there as a bystander on the scrap roads in 1992, watching the destruction of these fine trains. It was a very sad sight, and even 18 years later is still chilling. :-(

We can thank the Media and our guttless Politicians for this. :-(

  • It's hard watching 60 years of history and millions of kilometres of railway service just get destroyed like that. Mind you, the day they start cutting up the Tangaras should be a public celebration with free viewing!

  • I'll second that!

  • Man i cant wait til they have the same thing with them new millenium trains lol. i know how ya feel....

  • @Bennyboy1985 Hey I like the Tangara's it's the millenium trains and the K sets I hate,

Sad News for you which I heard from RailCorp them selves as I'm going to buy a Tanagra carraige to turn it into a House, They wont be taken off the rails for another 10 years or so they said around 2020 the tangara's will start to come out of service

  • Hey does anyone know what the tune playing is?

  • Tommy Emmanuel

  • mark knopfler - going home

but also a close copy is

    dire straits local hero

  • @CosmoKramer82 Dire Straits going home

  • @CosmoKramer82 Local hero. dire straits do a better version.

  • ARR school days.....

  • I hope that the silver sets doesn't end up like that. I want to see them use as sheds, motel rooms just like red rattlers.

  • Comment removed

  • @rdrogel Just think about how much room there is in a silver double deck. Once you remove the seats, imagine this:

The former driver/guards compartment converted to bathroom with toilet inside the former drivers cab

    Upstairs is your loungeroom

    Downstairs is your bedroom

    Other end is your kitchen

At best, the scrap value of these cars minus wheelsets is about $2000ea. With wheelsets, perhaps $5000ea. There's the crane & semi to get your car to your property - about $10000. Still, cheap living.

  • @gregbassace1 I've actually had plans drawn up to do that with a Tangara non control carraige, Except with the bedroom upstairs due to the curve on the upper windows. Just awaiting one to come up on tender as the council A-OK'd it. Except planned with Solar power (have a mate that can make the custom solar panel to mould over the roof where the old Air con unit used to sit above the door. been planning it for about 4 years now just have to grab the carraige now for it to happen)

  • What's happening to those DD Tullochs at Redfern? There are 9 there now, all still painted grey, although some have graffiti on them and missing windows. They scrapped a heap of them at Maintrain, however some of these redfern carriages were moved from Maintrain just before they scrapped the others.

  • Scrap / Sale. There are more than enough Tulloch DDs preserved already both public and privatelyn owned.

  • Oh. I thought some were going to Sets or Dorrigo, or going to be used for fire training..

  • The cars at Petersham are going to be replaced by old V cars. There is a rumour about Dorrigo, but who ever cares what happens up there.

The cost between scrap and sale is about the same so if there are buyers who want them they will probably be sold.

  • I think some are used as training for cityrail drivers

  • At about 5:00 where the train is getting cut up, what is that yellow dust coming out of the floor? I have a feeling that it may be Asbestos........... Hope it isnt

  • Than the V sets

  • No asbestos in those floors. The Asbestos was in the roofs and none of the cars that were cut up had asbestos in them and / or it was removed before being cut up.

  • Any idea what it is then, or is it just some form of dust that accumulated over the years?

Just out of curiosity, how much asbestos was in them, i've heard answers from "not much" to "they were full of it" I've also heard that this is why you wernt allowed to live on a permanent basis in them, is this true?

  • Only selected cars had asbestos sheeting in the roofs as insulation. There were two types - White and Blue. The White consisted of preformed sheets which are safe as long as they are not disturbed. The Blue however was blown in and highly dangerous - such that when disposed of, the entire roof was cut off the car and buried as a whole. Of the preserved ones remaining, some still have white but all are stabilised.

  • In just a few years time, its going to be the Silver one's turn to be scrapped which will be sad to see :(

  • Look at the doors! Do they look like U sets to you!!

  • How could someone in there right mind destroy the red ones like that, Someone should have stopped them. F**ken Di**heads, That really boils me up.

  • Is there any of these left for special nostaligic runs? if there are can some please tell me when the next time they will be on the tracks? love to go for a ride in these old things again, cheers Dean

  • There's plenty of working stock but they aint goin anywhere soon. With Railcorp in deadlock and both competing preservation groups stuck in the mud, it's waiting for someone to break the deadlock before anything happens.

  • Ok cool, thanks so much for your message, please keep me posted

  • Why is there a deadlock? something to do with safety issues?

  • Different ideologies coupled with indifference and a dash of laziness. One wants to do everything themselves but has no resources to do so, the other wants to wait for the Government to do everything for them.. and they're still waiting.

  • Oh well I hope they get things sorted out soon, is there any of stainless steel single deck trains left their a similar vintage to the red ratters but were used on the country service, i remember catching them to Lithgow and to Wyong years ago

  • Railcorp have a 5 car set mothballed and SETS have a 4 car set in "sort of" working condition. Neither going anywhere soon.

    ZM

  • Ok cool, maybe one day they might hit the tracks again

  • they have 5 in the Springwood railyard and u can go inside them

  • @CMCHRYSLERVALIANT

There are some survivors, Dean, but not able to run due to public liability issues drawn up by the former Labor state government. However, they are still being maintained by a group of volunteers waiting for that day wnen they will return. They're in excellent condition.

Please check out my earlier reply of all the cars preserved.

Cheers......and thank you so much for your interest.

    Check out the following sites:

    SYDNEY ELECTRIC TRAIN SOCIETY

    HISTORIC ELECTRIC TRACTION.

  • @gregbassace1 Hi Greg, thanks so much for the information, I hope to ride on one of these again one day soon I hope, the last time I did was when I was in Sydney for TAFE back in 1987, I use to love the sounds and the smells of these old things. I will checkout the sites you mentioned, thanks again, cheers Dean

  • some of them are still at valley heights in the railyard there

  • Actually those ones are probably U-sets. They were the Intercity counterparts of the red rattlers introduced in the 1950s.

  • Hey mate, do you know when was this footage taken in '93?

  • Closest guess would be Feb / Mar 03. From memory it was all over by Winter of that year.

  • @FiloKuyaBaliw

Taken on a Saturday in July 1993. I'm the one who videoed the scrapping.

  • What a great video, sad to see these beasts go!

BTW, what's the name of the song at about 6 mins? It sounds like 2UE John Stanley's talkback show intro :P

  • I can see the other videos, but the two reds are gone videos don't seem to work.

  • Try ' em again later. Sounds like a UTube issue to me.

  • Is there anywhere I can download the video from?

  • very nice find

  • They actually sold the majority of its carriages to private buyers for as sheds, motel rooms, etc.

  • About 40% of the cars were sold as is, most without undergear. A further 30% were disposed of using traditional oxy / cut techniques. Less than 20% met their end using "the claw" which was only bought in when the scrapper fell behind on the contract just before it ended.

  • @zordmaker

And, all that's left of a total fleet of 1,465 cars are 26 red set cars and 11 silver set cars.
