Actually they are in the custody of a group known as Historic Electric Traction. Sadly, they don't seem very interested in running them and would rather just have sunday afternoon picnics.
I had gone to Everleigh workshops the same year as this was filmed and have some photos of these old trains, one being of interest is a photo of a parcel van that appears to have had met grief, the underside at one end of the carriage has been pulled forward away from the carriage and the front is totally ruined. It would be interesting to see if anyone knows what happened to the train to end up this way.
i use to ride these red rattlers all over Sydney and even when i was going to school
it is sad to see them go i remember standing at the station you know when the red rattlers were coming you could hear them coming from miles away before you even see them rip red rattlers you will be miss thanks for your years of service
Sad to see that,l worked on the old electric trains in the UK,and they've all gone that same way, thanks to paranoid polichickens and health'n'safety nazis.
Yes, In the Abondoned Eveleigh Maintenance Centre on the Platform 1 side of Redfern Station, only one Red Rattler Lives on there, connected to a Y Set.
I bought a model of this at the end of last year via Bergs' at Parramatta. Spent 10 years at least waiting for them to be re-released. Im pleased to say that power cars C7516 and C7485 live on, as do trailer cars T4561 and T4620- in H.O form! Only problem is that the model runs really smoothly with barely a sound, unlike the real thing!
That is until you put the pan up, Put it on a track, Hit the Go lever,Stand by the door and ride 50 tons of screaming steel down the track at 110kph. I guess for someone who hasnt done that (and lest face it, these things have been off the track now for 16 years) there can be no attachment.
I am 16, and love the things. Much better than the prisons on wheels that are today trains... (for the record, I if at all possible try to avoid going into the tunnels in a Tangara...)
I would give anything to have access to one of these things...
Even friends of mine who have no interest in trains say they are "pretty cool"
BTW, the commenter is 26 years old and lives in the UK, which may explain somthing..
The Sydney Electric Train Society & Historic Electric Traction are both restoring a good number of red cars for future mainline operations. You can become a volunteer with either or both of these societies...both with one goal:
To preserve & restore the vintage electric rollingstock back to the mainline.
There's some cars being restored for mainline operations & currently there are volunteer crews willing to be trained to drive them. Historic Electric Traction is gearing up now to accept new volunteer recruits & probably within 2-3 years, the return of the Red Rattler will beckon a new tourist travel for Sydney.
I was there as a bystander on the scrap roads in 1992, watching the destruction of these fine trains. It was a very sad sight, and even 18 years later is still chilling. :-(
We can thank the Media and our guttless Politicians for this. :-(
It's hard watching 60 years of history and millions of kilometres of railway service just get destroyed like that. Mind you, the day they start cutting up the Tangaras should be a public celebration with free viewing!
@Bennyboy1985 Hey I like the Tangara's it's the millenium trains and the K sets I hate,
Sad News for you which I heard from RailCorp them selves as I'm going to buy a Tanagra carraige to turn it into a House, They wont be taken off the rails for another 10 years or so they said around 2020 the tangara's will start to come out of service
@rdrogel Just think about how much room there is in a silver double deck. Once you remove the seats, imagine this:
The former driver/guards compartment converted to bathroom with toilet inside the former drivers cab
Upstairs is your loungeroom
Downstairs is your bedroom
Other end is your kitchen
At best, the scrap value of these cars minus wheelsets is about $2000ea. With wheelsets, perhaps $5000ea. There's the crane & semi to get your car to your property - about $10000. Still, cheap living.
@gregbassace1 I've actually had plans drawn up to do that with a Tangara non control carraige, Except with the bedroom upstairs due to the curve on the upper windows. Just awaiting one to come up on tender as the council A-OK'd it. Except planned with Solar power (have a mate that can make the custom solar panel to mould over the roof where the old Air con unit used to sit above the door. been planning it for about 4 years now just have to grab the carraige now for it to happen)
What's happening to those DD Tullochs at Redfern? There are 9 there now, all still painted grey, although some have graffiti on them and missing windows. They scrapped a heap of them at Maintrain, however some of these redfern carriages were moved from Maintrain just before they scrapped the others.
At about 5:00 where the train is getting cut up, what is that yellow dust coming out of the floor? I have a feeling that it may be Asbestos........... Hope it isnt
No asbestos in those floors. The Asbestos was in the roofs and none of the cars that were cut up had asbestos in them and / or it was removed before being cut up.
Any idea what it is then, or is it just some form of dust that accumulated over the years?
Just out of curiosity, how much asbestos was in them, i've heard answers from "not much" to "they were full of it" I've also heard that this is why you wernt allowed to live on a permanent basis in them, is this true?
Only selected cars had asbestos sheeting in the roofs as insulation. There were two types - White and Blue. The White consisted of preformed sheets which are safe as long as they are not disturbed. The Blue however was blown in and highly dangerous - such that when disposed of, the entire roof was cut off the car and buried as a whole. Of the preserved ones remaining, some still have white but all are stabilised.
Is there any of these left for special nostaligic runs? if there are can some please tell me when the next time they will be on the tracks? love to go for a ride in these old things again, cheers Dean
There's plenty of working stock but they aint goin anywhere soon. With Railcorp in deadlock and both competing preservation groups stuck in the mud, it's waiting for someone to break the deadlock before anything happens.

About 40% of the cars were sold as is, most without undergear. A further 30% were disposed of using traditional oxy / cut techniques. Less than 20% met their end using "the claw" which was only bought in when the scrapper fell behind on the contract just before it ended.
