My Father Played This ALL THE TIME .. Flawless FUNK!! This Type Of Music Made Me The Collector I Am Today!! .. And I Get HIS Copy ,, Eventually LOL!!!
This brings back so many fond memories. I used to dance with the Art Ensemble in it's beginning. They were my " big brothers" and were very protective, nurturing and perfect gentle-men. I was only 19 or twenty. Joseph branched off on his own for a bit ;rented a store front to live in and gave free concerts ( I danced) . People just drifted in off the sidewalk at will. It was some of my most cherished memories.
Can't say that I've ever heard a good cover version of this. No other group can do justice to the fact that the band sounds like it's one step away from falling off the rails and then just brings back the groove tighter than ever.
As a teenager when I only listened to blues and rock saw them performing in a theatre at Pori Jazz in the early 70´s and that really blew my mind and changed my conception of what music can be forever...so what more can I say but THANKS !!
Mitchell has always had a very grainy, abrupt style, and generally has favored the alto saxophone. Jarman, though he has played alto (and, distinctively, the Bb sopranino saxophone), has done some powerful work on the tenor, with complete mastery of the multiphonics possible on this larger horn. The tenor solo on this cut is classic Jarman from the late 60s/early 70s.
brilliant, i love this song...i used to danc eto this at a club in bristol every weekend thanks for putting it here my record player is broke so havent heard it for ages!!!!!
Great track from one of my all time fave albums. I've got two copies- just in case one fucks up. Would love to see the movie. Lester once told me it's a thematic work by Christian Reisoff (???) Can anyone give me more info on that?
Holy F*#k! Love these guys - First time I'm hearing this song though. Malachi Favors is straight-up Rockin' a gutbucket Funk-Bomb. This is so cool. This is the type of shit that I laugh & cry to at the same time when I see it live. "Scuse me - gotta go listen to Odwalla now.
When seeking out this album, do a search for AEC-Americans Swinging In Paris. This cd includes Les Stances a Sophie, and People In Sorrow. Two rare and highly regarded albums recorded in 1969-70.
I have this record, and have nearly worn it out in 30 years of listening. What magnificent solos by Roscoe Mitchell, the late Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman. Bass by the late Malachi Favors, percussion from Don Moye. And an awesome vocal by Fontella Bass, at the time married to Bowie. A unique, original, funny, soul-affirming work. Art Ensemble of Chicago, Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians--Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future!
peace!!!! ;)

AEOC is generally boring, free music is like a dead end street... and they made this wonderful song.
"Ur head is like a yoyo/Ur neck is like a string" sing the funky voice of Fontella Bass.
Yoyo was hip a that time...

How can you guys decide whether Roscoe or Joseph solos? I can recognise Roscoe's soprano playing but thay both play all the saxes.
Not that it would matter too much I'm just curios
