@TheNeonSquirrel “The name was Paul’s suggestion and it’s a name I really connected with. It means disconnecting the physical from the mental. That’s exactly how we feel about music and what we were trying to do with our music. It’s also the name given to a relatively new class of drugs that are named dissociatives, drugs like ketamine… What we’re trying to do with our music is create the kind of feelings in our listeners that’s close to the feeling you get on ketamine.”

Speaking of the people who are not in the band but in the video....wasn't there some sort of contest to be in a Disso video around this time. It just makes sense that those people were contest winners.....
I really like the sound of The Dissociatives has no genericness to it and is genuinely a good listen. Peeps who dislike the work that Dan did with them they they truly have lost the sense of what it means to be a musician with the right to express your self creatively.
It's about lying around drinking cough syrup. The reference to being a vegetable, am I dead, buried alive, etc... are examples of the effects of dissociative drugs on the mind. He is talking about ROBOTRIPPING! Ha, I always knew he did that.
this is the closest aussies have gotten to the brilliant plateau the beatles reached in the Stg Peppers years. I wish more aussies had the balls to venture there.
I wish more American's had the balls. Here they only want to hear them sing Tomorrow...God forbid they should venture beyond that stupid grunge box they got stuck in.
i know thats what sucks being in the states. but YM did get a bit of radio play so if their record is done by, say the summer of next year, the very well have a chance of really cementing themselves in amercians minds
I think the reason silverchairs 2nd album etc didnt sell well in America after the first one hit number 8 on the billboard charts was because their record company released abuse me as the first single off freakshow and it was softer and kinda gay for a rock band for their mostly teenage and young adult market. they released freak first here. Cemetry would have done better than abuse me even though its softer as its was so good instrumentaly for guys their age.
i think the line is completely literal. he's the kind of guy who would work that into a song. with silverchair on hiatus he probably just sat around, tending to his pets. just a thought.
I'm pretty sure it's about the time he had reactive arthritis and had to be in an oxygen tent and couldn't do anything for months except lay around in pain, he couldn't even play guitar.
@cottoncase i read somewhere that her and the other unknown guy on the little rollercoaster won a contest; the prize being an appearance in a dissociatives music video.. i cant remember where i read it though
@cottoncase I think I recall hearing or reading that it was Natalie Imbruglia. This was when they were married....I believe. Or at least when they were dating.
You're absolutely right. They are Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes from the Presets. It's funny that you mention it because I only just found out 3 days ago when someone commented on my Somewhere Down The Barrel video. Seriously freaky...
I knew it as soon as i saw em, ow they have like all morfed into one band and joined on to silverchair cause both paul mac and Julian helped with young mordern heheh thats cool. Aussies best working together.
I don't know, Daniel seems to be a bit deeper than that to me Animal rights just doesn't seem too 'song worthy' especially since if you listen the other lyrics of this song... they don't seem too animal related.
I highly doubt he'd say "feeding my animals" with the intention of actually feeding animals.
Like I said, he's deeper than that I'd like to believe. He wants you to find the meaning, so the fact he flat out says that line makes me believe there's more to it, you know?
well i think you're right as far as it being more than animal rights haha. I'd say the animals line is an attempt to confront the listener with the almost disturbing but yet satisfying solitude and escapism that he indulged in years ago when he was really ill. People like daniel spend time living in their own heads, in worlds that i imagine are pretty fucken incredible but yeah, also kinda dangerous if you spend too much time there
I totally agree he's deeper in this song, than to mean the line literally, but don't rule animal rights out as not being song-worthy... don't forget Spawn Again :)
It is wonderful: Daniel Johns comes on the scene as an angry youth, rebelious and brash. Only to turns into poignant, tender, and rather avant garde adult. Thank you Daniel for all of your music.....
call me a moron all you want I dont care I still like Silverchair alot better than this band... Is my opinion thats all... Daniels voice is still incredible beautiful and amazing in this band but... I dont like the MUSIC that accompanies his voice in tihs band.
ministerofhate is totally wrong anything that Daniel Johns writes and releases is a work of art...even though u can tell that while making this video clip he was high... :D
just because this is ORIGINAL and ARTISTIC doesnt mean is GOOD ... I never thought Id say this but Daniel Johns needs to lay off the drugs... But this band does sound better than new Silverchair (for what its worth lol)
some of the best albums ever made were written when people were on drugs- ie: Beatles' Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band & also Jimi Hendrix's Axis Bold as Love
it was a JOKE lol since everyone thinks he's high out of his mind all the time I do drugs myself. and I wrote that 8 months ago since then I've cahnged my mind about this band and I like more than half the cd now theres still a cpl tracks I dont like however but its all good
Dissociative trip.. After seeing "Am I dead? Buried? Alive?" I had no doubt, it was highly related to tripping on dissociatives ;)

It sounds like he's singing about 'inner demons'
"All of this time on my hands so far has gone to feeding my animals"
I think he's... feeding his inner demons.
The mental hospital beds "all of the time I was dead, limpless(?) in bed, sedated experiments"
So yeah, I'd assume it's about inner demons.

could also have something to do with his pro-animal rights stuff, him being a vegan and everything.
