At that point it is no longer a "Civil War". A "Civil War" is two or more factions fight for control of the same government, which didn't happen. We wanted our own independence, formed our own military, government, and even constitution. So that being said, it was the War of Southern Independence, not the American Civil War.

i like this show. i'm not even american. i can only imagine the kind of work that was put into researching about, and making a narrative of the entire 300-year history of the US, then compressing it into a 12-episode miniseries. what disappoints me though is that they used media personalities instead of actual history scholars to provide commentary. i get it that "the story of us" means the story of the american nation, not just scholars. still, it does take away from the show's credibility.

@Shadowsoldier12 the north had a much larger population, had a much larger economy, had a much larger railway infrastructure, was a much larger industrial power, and they where responsible for something like 97% of all firearm productions before the war. the only hope that the confederacy had at winning the war, just like japan in ww2, would be if they could deliver a decisive blow early on or they needed a european power to join on their side, they failed to do both. the war was over after

@guyinkentucky1 Well the most obvious reason is that the North had to invade and suppress the Confederacy's secession from the Union. The offensive always has the greater disadvantage. Not to mention, the South had many natural defenses including excessive wilderness, woods, rivers (most of them flowed west/east making it difficult to go straight South), as well as the massive size of the Southern Country. I'm sure someone has written a book explaining how it went on for years rather than days.

God, I hate how this documentary (like almost EVERY documentary about the Civil War) demonizes the South and makes it out as if the only reason they were fighting for their independence was because of slavery. In the late 1850s, early 60's slavery--even in the South--slavery was dying out.

They were fighting from oppression and unfair taxes from the Federal government. I'm not from the South or the "North" but it annoys me when people constantly inaccurately portray history.

@benji5501 Slavery in all forms is wrong, but you do make a good point. Your point is that the South did not fight only for slavery, which is true. However, the South did, in part, fight for slavery MAINLY because the land in the south is perfect for agriculture. The North's land was in no such shape, therefore they industrialized the land with factory and industry and had no such use for slaves. Ultimately, both sides fought to preserve their ways of life and in this case the North won.

@benji5501 They roots of the problems WAS about slavery. The North had their factory's, and assembly lines in the urban areas. And then they had farms in their country side areas. The south's main income was cotton, and tobacco. And slaves WERE their factory's, machines, and tractors. Taking the slaves away from the south at that time was like taking the factory's away from the north. And the south saw this as 'Oppression.' Bottom line is, they were separatists living a dieing way of life.
