White Trash School Board! I hate them - they are racist! The book and movie is wonderful and inspiring. I'm sure there are worse things on TV and in the movie theaters that kids these days are watching. This book was presented as a educational resource - how can the school board be so stupid!
I LOVE her answer and her face expression at 1:55 to his question about the "graphic" language in the book. "It's the way they talk" lol I had a cool, understanding, very interactive English teacher like this in high school. Very understanding of the world around her and very inspirational. we need more teachers like this if schools want to keep there students in class rooms.
If you raise your children without using foul language, they will learn it on the school bus anyway! So just because it is in a book, that does not mean that it is going to make them start saying it. The child makes a choice period. The movie was truely inspirational for me and the real world happens everyday whether we like it or not. School Boards = Hippos who care more about their fat pay stubs and causing problems than actually helping kids. Did you see the board members--I don't think one of them was not in a stinking 100 dollar outfit or were not looking like middle-class.

The book should be replaced with "1984" or "Fahrenheit 451", both of which will illustrate for them what small-minded individuals like this school board would like the world to be like.

This book has been such an inspiration to me to change my ways and how I think and or treat people. They are so wrong this book will do more good I don't see any harm in this book at all. 15 years ago when I was a student in Holland, I read books on the schools booklist that were worse in foul language than this book. And hey, this is written for and by students of there own age. With a great message against violence and with hope.
I was amazed at how one teacher can help rechannel so much of the students' good and bad life experiences into such honest writing. Any teacher who can feel how incredible Erin Gruwell and her Freedom Writers are should be allowed to teach their students the truth. And their truths were not censored because life is not censored.
I read the book and I'm sure that the language that we hear at school isn't better than the language of the book... so why a teacher can't gave to her student a book which can inspire then to became better for its language? The language of the book is the language than a lots of us use!!!!!!
If the parents said it was okay for their children to read the book, then there shouldn't be a problem. Sure there's certain language used in it but over time, you see how the students evolve to becoming headstrong scholars who are in control of their own future. Also, as for the language, that's how the students express the situation. In my opinion, they're saying that if Anne Frank wrote like that, then the students wouldn't be allowed to read her book either.
