I totally recommend for the manga to be read first!! When I first started watching the anime it was really hard for me to understand what the heck was going on because they started like...halfway through the manga just to get it to 12 episodes in the anime I guess.

Read the manga to appreciate the anime.

@PirateNinjaCowboy I was in the mood to watch an anime and I randomly picked this one. I enjoy it very much and I even read the manga. this is one of my top anime and manga.

Reading the manga helps with trying to understand what's going on in the anime. because when I first watched it I had no idea what was going on. The anime starts with them in middle school, but the manga starts when Shuu transfered to the elementry school where he meets Takatsuki.

did anyone realize that the bgm is a variation of hourou musuko's ending song? The last part I can perfectly the last phrase "I wanna dream for you" till the end. Also the last part of the bgm has the same piano as in the ending towards the end. :D

So its a piano version of "For you" by Rie Fu.

Nitorin is like me...almost too perfectly...although I do wish my face was feminine like his...this manga takes too long to come out, but I still love it (it's still not complete) Nitorin probably has a condition known as "Gender Dysphoria" well condition makes it sound like an illness, but it most definitley not. People who have Gender Dysphoria are what is called "Transgender" I also identify myself this way *nod*

@rejectedmuppet77 It's not clear in the original comics yet. The main character who is cross-dressing boy, date with girl. Another boy clearly say he loves male. However, sexual scenes have not been appeared, and will not, i think.

The transgender woman they meet later has a man, take that for what you will.

In case you guys don't know, Fantagraphics is opening a new manga-line this December and they're kicking off with the first volume (in English, of course) of Hourou Musuko!!! :) (and some early work of Hagio Moto!) Please support the manga. It must be lovely to live in USA where you can pick up transgender comics from a bookstore. I can only dream. :)) Cant wait for this anime. Manga made me cry when I found out about it. :)

I can't wait for this anime! Definately the anime of the year (2011). I've read all the chapters of the manga up to 91 and the story is really interesting! Finally an anime that doesn't have ridiculousness or aliens or such. A pure "real" story.

lame, gay or not, the original write up of author is highly commended and i believe it receive awards as well. so its not necessarily a "gay" anime but instead a some sort of documentary type of film that aims of social issues related to the unknown side of gender, the type even our god claimed he doesn't know... because he never created the other 2 genders; gay and lesbian and in his eyes its evil.

I don't think Nitorin is at that stage where you would call him a girl. It's true that he's got gender identity disorders and wants to be a girl, but (manga wise) at the stage he is at he isn't fully living his life as girl. So therefore he's not a girl. \:

For now, he's still a boy with transgender issues and he's working his way to becoming a girl and having others fully see him as a girl.

The problem isn't her body, the problem is that society treats her body as male because that's the gender her doctors assigned her at birth. I don't present as male all the time and a lot of people think I'm a girl when I'm on the streets, that does NOT mean I am not a guy. From the moment she was born, Nitori's been a girl. simple.

by the way Nitorin is not a boy, but a girl born in a boy body, and Takatsuki is a boy born in a girl body.  the gender is not decided from the beginning, it is what a person becomes
