@duck82797 A playpen can take many forms. All that matters is that it's something your robo has fun in. I've got a large area set up now, but Sweet Pea's 'playpen' from way back was just running around on my desk. (I don't recommend that though, fences are good)
There's a "Playpen Flyover" video on this site. If you'd like to see what I have set up now.
And at the moment I feed them bits of dried papaya for a treat. I have also used yogurt drops in the past.
@duck82797 Some robos just aren't hand hamsters. I have a few that aren't, and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it.
I think the main reason Lily is so hand friendly is the playpen. She learned that the 'hand' is what takes her to the playpen, and that's what makes it such a good thing. I'm not sure how that started though.
You could tempt your robo onto your hand with treats. Maybe that plus taking her to a playpen will help make your robo hand friendly.
@eveielove2 SAME ! Every timee i try to pick up my hamster , Junior he keeps biting me ! Ever sincee then i havee stopped playing with him but i can pick him up when i hear a glovee . Youu should try that so if your hamster trys biting youu it wont hurt [:

can someone tell me how to handle robovoski dwarf haamsters i have two and each time i want to hold it it never lets me and runs away i had them for 2-3 months now :(
I hope I get my Females robo's b4 Christmas! Do you know of any useful tips you would like to share with me? I am getting 2 females and nameing one, "Cookie," and the other, "Cream!" So if you put it together it would be like, "Cookie and Cream!"
@izzygirl1998 'Vitakraft Drops With Yogurt' (plain ones, they don't like the fruity flavors)
They also really like 'Kaytee Fiesta Healthy Toppings Papaya.' I've been using those more lately; they don't have added sugar, and it's easier to chip off Robo sized bits.
@cjbrix Guess What! I got my Hammies! I have had them for 2 days! I just started taming today! Cream is waking into my hand and then I can pick her up, but she doesn't stay on very long. It's only like 10 seconds. Cookie is a whole nother story! Lol
my hamster is a bobo and never bites or does anything but run in his wheel he loves me! and lets me hold him but he is so fast when he jumps out i almost lose him!
WOW. That is the cutest Robo I've ever seen! Lily is abosolutely adorable! She's so friendly, too! I really want a Robo hamster and I hope mine would be as nice as Lily! :)
mine is a little beast he scream and bite every time ..i am very kind with him and my GF really want to pet him ....i think there is no hope but do anybody have a good trick to tame them ??
@azaquihel There isn't one trick, it takes a lot of patience and an evolving approach to befriend a Robo.
If he's screaming and biting, you're in a tough spot. He's got some issues to overcome.
Leave him alone on the petting. Your goal should be to have him take treats from your hand.
He needs to get used to you, and he needs to feel safe. Spend a lot of time with your hand in the cage being still, or moving slowly, always holding a treat in case he gets brave. And... 500 chars. Good luck.
@windbertwirler101 I do make an effort to get them used to hands, but coming over to me isn't a trick she's been taught or anything. She's just being friendly.
I have a question - I've had my Robo Dwarf for over a month, and I was wondering if it would be safe to buy her another Robo Dwarf friend? I already have a second cage, and they're connected so my hamster can go back and forth between the two. Would it be safe to get another hamster, or would my current hamster fight with her new friend, or vice versa?
@Mufasa20X If she's young, it's possible. But it's also possible it wouldn't work out, it's something you would always have to monitor.
Robos do seem to like company, but they also tend to squabble. And sooner or later a disagreement will turn ugly. All my old robos end up alone eventually.
Alternatively, if you have two cages that can pushed up against each other you could get her a friend that you keep separate. Male-female pairs work well for that.
@cjbrix Okay, thank you so much for your reply. Would it be best if I didn't try to put them in the same cage, or should I try to put them in the same cage at first and if it doesn't work out separate them?
If you get her a male friend, housing them together would mean babies. So you would want him separate from the start. (I assume)
If you get her a female friend, they could bond as roommates for awhile, but once separated they would be arguing between the connected cages. The male would be friendlier.
@Pockysodi Long nails have occasionally been an issue for me. But I don't have safe way to trim them, (too small and squirmy) and I'm not sure it's the right thing to do anyway. They don't seem too bothered by long nails, and I don't want to hurt them.
It's best if they can wear down their nails naturally on something rough in their cage. Snak shak logs seem have worked for some. For others I'm considering a flat piece of brick or rock, but I haven't found a general solution yet.
@MacsCanfly They have very soft, very luxurious fur. (they come from the cold of the Gobi desert)
There's not much to them physically; underneath the fur and then the pouches they're tiny. Means they can wriggle through anything.
So they're very soft and light. And when they want to be, impossibly squirmy. The only thing solid you feel is their head and their little scampering feet.
Aww she's so cute~ I juust got 2 robo hamsters few weeks ago, I'm still trying to let them get used to the smell of my hand. Did Lily ever bite you while shes in your hand? That's the only thing I'm afraid of when i approach my two new hamsters.
@Pockysodi Lily does get nippy sometimes. But she's never bitten me hard, or even to hurt really.
She's more energetic and impatient than Sweet Pea. And she'll sometimes get a little chewy if she's feeling thwarted. Lily isn't a good one to tease.
It's very unlikely that your Robos will bite when you first reach out to them though, they hardly ever bite out of fear. But tamer Robos sometimes bite a little to test or assert control.
@xcarasilx I've had Lily her entire life, she's tamed by constant gentle exposure to people.
I think scent is a fundamental part to why it's difficult to tame Robos. They seem to naturally dislike the smell of people, and even very tame Robos (including Lily) will pull away from the smell of human skin.
But a steady supply of food treats helps make up for the fact that you smell bad. :)
@cjbrix thanks for the tip! see, we've had an incident where the hamster got out of the ball. I guess we didn't check up for one sec, and he ran away. we spent half and hour trying to catch him! will this leave some sort of thing in the brain so that he will hate humans? or should we just get a better ball? i don't mean to bother you, but will he hate humans for this one little time? O.o
@xcarasilx If you chased him around for 30 minutes that probably put a scare into him. But hamsters are simple creatures, a week of friendly noises and treats and he should forget all about it.
I would suggest looking at his behavior toward the ball though. A lot of hamster owners think their pet is having a great time in those balls when they're actually really scared. Make sure he really is having fun. You might also try a playpen as an alternative, and compare his reaction to that.
@xcarasilx by the way, do hamsters really like yogurt treats? because i've been considering getting them, but last time i was at the store, they where out for the week ( uhhhh, fridays!)
@xcarasilx Every hamster is going to be different. But every Robo I've ever had liked those plain yogurt treats, (specifically the plain ones, hardly any like the flavored ones) so I'd say they're a pretty good bet.
The only other treat type I've had good success with are the Fiesta papaya treats. But for enthusiasm level, the yogurt treats still win out.
@awesomeH2O Sorry for delay answering. I'm running out of ways to respond to the "how do you tame your hamsters?" question. :p
Yes, Roborovski = desert hamster. And yes they are hard to tame and easily startled. It's a long uphill battle to gain their trust, since every mistake (scaring, dropping, etc) can cost you days of progress.
But when you get through it, you have a friendly little fuzzy like Lily. :)

@izzygirl1998 Learn to think small.
Robos are tiny and high-strung, and you are big and loud and smell like something that might eat them at any time.
Picture the world from a Robo's perspective. That's the starting point for figuring out how to make friends.
Oh, and get some food treats.
