The fat one has the tendency to have YLOD(yellow light of death which renders the ps3 useless while the slim one is fixed of the YLOD) also the fat one gets a HELL LOT OF FREAKIN FINGERPRINTS. The reason why they made the slim is not for it to be light so that everyone could carry it around like a laptop but to make it look nice and fix a lot of errors that they made with the past models. also the fat has old hardware and heats up really fast.

like all electronic items, it only takes time to new and smaller components to come along and is what has probably happened, the power supply was much bigger in the phat one as it seemed to have the same motherboard due to the same locations of the ports (unless they're on a seperate board)

For example, the ps2 phat vs slim, if you took away the psu off the phat and made it external to the unit, you would see that the phat one would virtually be the same size of the slim one.

@pejonure2 well i have to say there that your wrong. Mainly yes both console have similar component, but still in term of graphic it is not the same i'll explain you why. Most of the game are made primary on xbox because it is easier and after that they port it on ps3. So here this is why we have the same graphic on both console,but building a ps3 game and port it on xbox would be impossible, especially if the developpers use the power of the 8 processor of 3,4 ghz each that the xbox don't have.

@pejonure2 With those 8 processors we can make game like killzone and uncharted that have great graphic and good animation (especially in uncharted 3 for the animation) where the xbox processors do not support because the way that processors work on xbox are not the same as ps3. On ps3 like i said there's 8 processors, one of them is the big boss that spread all the work to the others. So that mean the audio, scale, light, graphic, physic, animation etc.. all have a processors of 3,4 ghz each.

@teo1000t Some Models of PS3 (FAT Verison) are backwards compatible. Google some models online. backwards compatible models was discontinued a couple years back due to expensive to make other issuse. but their are some PS1 Games on PSN that are compatible with all verison of ps3. (Limited Selection on PS1 on PSN tho). hope this helps

I wouldn't say it's entirely down to preference since the fat is prone to YLOD, overheating and it's much louder. The standard hard drive is also much too small, I used up all of my 80gb before I got YLOD and switched to a Slim.
