Marie Mclaughlin's rendition of Micaela's aria is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard in more than 50 years of operagoing. Her voice is placed almost perfectly and her interpretation is warm and heartfelt. This aria hardly ever gets the kind of attention it might if more sopranos interpreted it as she does here. Brava, bravissimo
BRAVISSSSSSIMA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Best rendition of this aria, which happens to be a difficult one but she make it sound easy. Beautiful piano, but maybe the conductor's idea, but the second part of the aria is TOO slow. I have never saw such expresive beautiful face.
This is new for me watching her performing this beautifull aria, I have a recording of Le Nozze and she sings Marcellina's role (normally performed by mezzos)
I really adore this interpretation. I've been listening to quite a few recordings lately (I'm working on this piece currently) and there's something about her interpretation that really speaks to me. Her large, rich voice makes it a real treat to hear such long, languishing phrases. As a lyric who will never have the lightness of tone to play damsel roles, I value Ms. McLaughlin's performance greatly. Thank you for posting this.
Yes, for me we lose the tension between Michaela's terror at being by the smugglers' camp and her trust that God will protect her - it just becomes a very beautiful lyrical aria. And she runs out of breath at one point!
Sorry, Marie never sang the Countess. She has a german type of a soubrette. Now, with age, and with great acting, she manages to sing Marcellina( Nozze). Of course, I saw her at the Met in Marcellina (Fidelio), this is great for her voice. So, the "tour de force" that she made in singing Traviata is great, even in a small theatre as Glynebourne.
Marie McLaughlin... A Scottish soprano. Fantastic! Was the best Susana some time ago and still doing amaizing stuff....Saw her in Salzburg last year - great, and still so pretty!
I agree. It's innocent and yet not wimpy. Plus , this is a long-ass aria--whenever I sing it I feel like I'm going to die by the halfway point! She keeps it beautiful throughout.
my favorite aria. She is a perfect Micaela-- beautiful in the most unfortunate, mousy, scared way. The whole backstory for the soliloquy is just so sad. So moving.
I would put Isobel Buchanan above this for purity of tone but hand the dramatic interpretation award to marie.

The scooping is a problem, but otherwise a pleasant voice and a good pianissismo.

It´s really gorgeus!!
I feel the aria in a similar way when I sing it! And it´s funny that this video has been filmed the same year I was born... I like the coincidence

Brava Marie - she is one of the best, from Micaela, Suzanna, Countess, and now Marcellina (Nozze). We will always love you.
