What about efficiency? With the 8-gear system I think the losses are heavy with higher gear ratios.

i have an alfine8 and pretty happy.

rode it throughout the whole winter with snow n salt.. about 3000km are on it now. and still no service needed. it shifts still fine.. cheap normal gearsets have half the lifespan of an Alfine8 in our conditions here.

Maybe ill add a crank mounted Schlumpf gears system with two speeds later.

I would not recommend to shift under total load. Even with a Rohloff I wouldn't do it. No matter what transmission (internal hub or not) wear and tear is always higher whilst shifting under high loads. I run a 8 Speed internal hub (Nexus SG R36 quite the same as Alfine 8) with a double crank 34t and 50t with a 20t rear sprocket -> gives me a range from 1,9m to 8,7m per pedal rotation (more than Alfine 11 would give me). But I am going to buy and Alfine 11 in future. Want to use A Chain Glider.

i have used both 8 and 11 speeds.

i find that the 11 speed slips more especially under high load than the 8 speed.

but the higher gear ratios in the 11 are noticable.
