Wouldn't have been close if you had ridden defensively. He wasn't looking but he didn't do anything sudden either. He was in the wrong but you rode badly and worsened the problem.
Last time somene did that to me I left black marks down the side of his van, BMW luggage is about like a crayon. He wanted my lane and I wasn't willing to give it up without a little contact. I won't be doing that again, didn't fall down but I lost a point by dabbing a foot down.
Reminds me of a time I was riding with my dad, my dad got cut off by some guy in a Mercedes SUV, my dad followed him all the way to where he was going, and told him he is a fucking dumb ass and should watch where the hell his dumb ass is going, and look for motorcycles.

It's a Mercury Sable, not a Ford Taurus.
Typically driven by older and/or dumber drivers than those of the Taurus, because they shelled out thousands more for "upscale."
Okay, the tasteless shot at Ford/Mercury drivers aside, that indeed was a close call. Unfortunately a commonplace occurrence.
