  • I was on the show with a few other high school kids and it was great! What is and isn"t cool is all relative.

  • I once watched this show (when I was a child) and my parents thought it was terrible muck. Now I think it is terrible muck. Guess I have gotten old!

  • What the youth today may not understand is that Thaxton taught us to watch and listen and to immitate respectably in lip sync, so we learned to play music by his good example. I don't think many kids today are learning much past pushing buttons on ipods. My brother and I made cardboard mock guitars, lip sync-d to Bealtes records. Other local friends did this with us, some of them went on to become great local blues musical performance acts and master musicians. I in graphic astronomy arts on CD

  • I am very sorry, but I loved this show and watched it every night.

  • Lloyd Thaxton show was 'ORRIBLE !

  • That is some bad dancing, I must admit, but still fun to watch.

  • Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates fame, was quoted as saying.. " When i was a kid in the 60's , i watched the Lloyd thaxton show a couple of times and that was my first exposure to California culture. I had thought , These kids are geeks. they cant dance, thy're ugly, the're fools and they dont know how to dress.

"Slowly hanging out in Los Angeles in the late 70's i began to realise that i had been right as a kid '.

Judging by that show i would say that daryl was dead right !

  • I'm sorry but I always thought this guy was an unfunny, no-talent hack.

  • @tempemoore Yep. Agreed.

  • WOW! And the prizes were actually made in the USA back then!!!

  • @TheTwd1211 Back then, just about everything was made in the USA

  • I actually was a dancer and "Lip Sync" performer on a couple of these shows....

  • @KaseyCrosby

My band played on his show in '70.

Is there anyway of obtaining those old shows of bands that

    never made it big?

  • Did Lloyd really think he was entertaining teenagers?? If he wanted to entertain us, I think perhaps he could have pulled a 45 out of his pocket and blown his fucking brains out.

  • @TeenCretin Amen!

  • I loved the singing fingers

  • @denny906 THE SINGING FINGERS! I FORGOT ABOUT THEM! one day lloyd starts bragging about how this next bit is going to feature some expensive special effects. he brings out the fingers all wearing rain caps. they start singing i love the flower girl by the cowsills that opens with a rain storm. you see the rain falling on the fingers. me being a kid, im wowed by the special effects. at the end of the song he pulls the camera back and you see its just a watering can pouring over the fingers.

  • @HSECMAN I also remember that very funny skit Lloyd Thaxton did called There's a Hole in the Bucket Dear Henry Dear Henry.

  • Great show: imagine American Bandstand as hosted by Soupy Sales...

  • Lloyd Thaxton played lots of new music, particularly from England. This Georgie Fame song wasn't a hit until Lloyd played it. I remember going to one show but I'll be honest, I can't remember who was on that day. Cool, thanks for sharing.

  • Sorry, this clip is the only video I have of Thaxton.

  • hey - do you have the Beach Boys appearance on his show in 66

  • I am agast!! At the end he thanks all the kids from "Gardena"!!! My formative years were in Gardena! Not only is this a great historical film to have archived, but also strikes a personal note, very close to home. Thank you for sharing it!

  • @WhatWouldZappaSay Well I didn't lived too far where you lived ,I use to live in Lawndale and I still remember this show whenb I was juts a little kid at the time. Remembering the show came on every afternoon on channel 13 after cartoon time, boy those were the good old days.

  • @1979cl1 I think some of the disparaging comments here are very unfair. I also remember enjoying this show as a child and compared to the other shows on daytime TV it was wonderful. I still remember one of Thaxton's opening lipsynch routines to Oscar Brown Jr's "But I Was Cool". How hip was that for daytime local TV? Thaxton and Dobie Gillis were as hip as it got on daytime TV back then.

  • I used to love this show when I was a kid, especially when Lloyd would lip-sync to Oscar Brown Jr's "But I Was Cool". That used to crack me up!

  • I remember this show, so well. The dancers aren't up to Bandstand standards, that's for sure!

  • Does the whole show exist?

  • whaT a DORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @rorygg1 I remember this show, he was a real straight seemed like an old guy, to me in 1965, but he was funny and everyone had a good time. Those were the days when you didn't have to be a thug to be thought cool. Thaxton was okay and gave kids something constructive to do after school.

  • To amend the amending...it is Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames.

  • Golly--I watched this four times in a row!

He sure made that catchy song his own!

    Compelling vid--I vaguely remember this

likeable guy. Thanks for posting this.

  • Lloyd Thaxton was from Toledo, Ohio! RIP Lloyd

  • Isn't the music that introduces the show the same as the "Dating Game" theme? I love the line up-The Sandpipers singing Guantanamera, the song of the Cuban Revolution, and 13th Floor Elevators-the kings of psychedelic music.

  • @6motion6 No, that's not the Dating Game theme. I'm not sure, but I think the Dating Game theme was, "Tijuana Taxi".

  • Our high school class appeared on the show in 1965, we were from Marina High School. The show was seen on KCOP Channel 13 in LA

  • Was it Lloyd Thaxton who would put a glove on his hand that had faces painted on the finger tips and he would do a whole routine where he'd lip sync a song with the faces?

  • If you have the rest of this show, PLEASE post the 13th Floor Elevators portion of the show!!!!!!!

  • I pulled up to a street corner in WLA and saw Lloyd, rolled down my window and asked: "Are you Lloyd Thaxton?", he smiled and said "Yes!" I yelled back: "So What!" and he cracked up!

  • I loved Lloyd Thaxton! He personally answered one of my e-mails. I'm just so sorry that he never completed the DVD of his shows. By the way, the name of the game they would play on his show was "Don't Lose Your Marbles." Also, do you guys remember Lynn Marta and Mike Storm? I still can see him doing "There's a Hole in the Bucket."

    RIP Lloyd.

  • I wrote to Lloyd and asked about Lynn Marta. He said they lost touch years ago and had no idea what she was up to. I remember them fondly.

  • Can you IMAGINE a show like this being on nowadays. Talk about simplistic fun. Some host lip synching while doing goofy stuff. Nowadays, the ACTS lip synch in CONCERTS where people pay big money to see them. Go figure.

  • While drummer with The Shadows of Knight, I was on the show in late 1969. We flew to a closed amusement park in Indianapolis and the band was filmed on the rides, and also playing our hit "Gloria." I would give anything to be able to see that show once again, but I'm sure it's gone. Lloyd was a real upbeat guy and he'll be remembered.

  • @roccovaselino you guys were a great band...yeah Chicago...

  • @roccovaselino "Gloria" was great, but I always liked, "Shake" better. Thanks LOADS for the great music!! I only hope mine will be at least half as memorable as yours is.

  • GREAT SHOW!!!! Channel 13 KCOP I remembered when he lip synced "Don't Let The Rain Come Down" Those were the days!!!

  • Wasn't Mitch Mitchell in Georgie Fame ??

  • Way before Conan O'Brien's late night show, Lloyd was pushing his lips through posters and album covers lip-synching. I wish I could see some of his shows again. Just the wildest guy, who dug music. I always felt he was the oldest teenager alive, NOT Dick Clark. Lloyd was a funny, funny guy. Luv 'ya, Lloyd . . . . .

  • Oh, damn, lost another cool dude! I watched "The Lloyd Thaxton Show" in Tulsa, Oklahoma for a couple of years when I was a pre-teen. It was way cooler than "Shindig" or "Hullabaloo" or "American Bandstand" just because of Lloyd's crazy antics. I remember one of his finger puppet schticks to "True Love" (the R&B-rock hit, not the waltz). Plus, he'd do crazy take-offs of James Brown songs.

  • What a trip!!! I used to live off of Willoughby near La Brea (or was it Highland) and went to see his show as a kid. Channel 13 was right there. Thanks for posting. Many, many memories.....

  • Thanks, I try to tell some people this show existed but most do not remember it.

  • The mid 60's was a grand time for a young teen to live in LA...We had THREE daily dance shows...Channel 9 had Groovy with Robert W. Morgan, channel 5 Shebang with Casey Kasem and channel 13 put on Lloyd Thaxton...The Cool thing about all of them was that if your fav star was on one Monday, you knew they would be on the others later in the week...plus no doubt on American Bandstand that weekend...Ah, the good old TV days!

  • dont forget 9th Street West on channel 9. Which was then Hollywood a go-go....

  • From what I could tell, both Thaxton's show and "Hollywood a Go Go" were run in New York on WPIX Channel 11.

  • Score! I saw both of those programs on WPIX during the 1960's.

No, I will NOT tell my age, although I have a birthday coming. LOLOL.

  • @Juliaflo Happy b-day! So, you're from Pittsburgh, too? I remember him doing the Theme From Airport by using turkey basters to drip water into bowls of water. But the thing I remember the most was the Grnurf. It was like Cousin Itt, but had on groovy sunglasses and wobbled from side to side while holding up a sign with a funny slogan. He also lip synced Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter while standing on his knees in a bowler. He MAY have been playing a ukelele, too.

  • @RedVynil No, I'm not from Pittsburgh, but New York City.

  • @Juliaflo OOPS! Sorry! Our channel 11 is NOW called, WPXI, but, back then, up until the early `80's, it was called, WIIC. Sorry, I got the two confused! But you're not TOO terribly far away from Pittsburgh.

  • @RedVynil I think you got the call letters confused. I meant WPIX in my home of New York.

  • @Juliaflo Oops, again! Sorry about that. I can't even blame it on drugs, because I never use any. Lol.

Oh, well, back to the Beatles cartoons.

  • @RedVynil Hello, I played in an LA band called ' Jumbo ' in '70

we did the lloyd Thaxton show. Do you have any idea of how I could find that

old video or pictures of that show? thanks

  • @jumbodrummer Sorry, mate, I wouldn't have a clue other than to search here or bug Llloyd's estate (et., al.) to finish the DVD's FOR him. With all the old t.v. shows from that era coming to the fore these days, there's GOT to be SOMEONE that has access to them, or has collected them. There's a few videos that my band (I'm also a drummer) shot right here in Pittsburgh that I haven't seen since we shot them back in the mid `80's!! Nobody seems to have them, though!

  • @RedVynil Thanks Silver Tama's

  • @jumbodrummer Your quite welcome. Whatevever works. Silver snare, white piccolo snare, red 12" tom, strawberry wallpaper 20" bass drum & 12" tom, woodgrain 24" bass drum & 13" and 16" toms, silver 13" tom, blue painted 13" and 16" tom (there's a 24" bass that goes with it, but my bass player won't give it back),

  • @jumbodrummer ...white pearl and red sparkle 16" floor toms, 7 cymbals, 5-piece Simmons SDS 1000 & TMI and 13-peice Roland V-Drums (TD-5, 7 & 10). And a few other pieces I don't have the room for...yet

  • @RedVynil .... sounds nice. I retired and my kit is in the attic.

We are setting up a Jumbo web-site soon. I'll stay in touch with you if you'ls like.

  • @jumbodrummer All 4 of my sets are in the basement. I doubt I'll ever retire. I've been playing since I was 4 or 5 and see no reason to stop.

Sure, keep in touch, if you like. Do you have any recordings of Jumbo? I'd like to hear them.

  • @RedVynil 4 sets? Why not just put them together and tell Billy Cobham

to 'take that' You'll stop playing as soon as you get tired of hauling all that hardware

around. (unless of course you have a personal roadie) Yes, Jumbo made an album before we broke up. It will be available for free down-load when the site is up. Which should be within the week we hope. Pretty cool that all five of us and our manager are all still alive and well ( well, sort of well anyway )

  • @jumbodrummer I probably could put them all together and give Bill Bruford a run for his money.

I've been lugging my 12-piece around for the past 30 years and haven't gotten tired of it yet. I doubt I ever wiil. It's all about the music and the fun of playing, to me. It'd be great if I could make big cash from it, but, I'm more into it for the music than the cash.

Send me a link when the site is up.

  • @RedVynil Will do.

  • @jumbodrummer Groovy!

  • @RedVynil Hey dude, the web-site is running.

go to jumbo70.com and have a look and a listen.

40 yrs. ago wow, seems like only a few.... Neil Olson

  • @jumbodrummer Groovy! Thanks LOADS!! I'll have a look at it shortly.

Yeah, doesn't it? I can remember things I did in the `60's as if they only happend about 15 years ago!! Things that happened in the `90's seem like they only just happened about 3 to 5 years ago! I can't believe it was nearly 20 years ago (`92/`93) that I almost had my first kid!! I wish we did. )-:

    Dale

  • @jumbodrummer Just checked nearly everything on the site! Cool!! Nice production on the album, too! Does Mr. Pisula have any relatives in Pittsburgh? I know a girl guitarist named, Patty Pisula, who used to be in a few local bands. Thickhead Grin was the last one, I think. I also accidently met another Patty Pisula who, even more strangely, shares the same b-day as the other Patty Pisula: St. Patrick's Day!!

  • @RedVynil Thanks Dale:

Rich has not really been much of a factor right now.

Personal issues have kept him from much communication.

I kind of doubt it though. I'll ask Mike he may know. thanks again and

please tell your friends about our site and any ideas you may have for us

will be carefully examined. We plan on branching out. I'd like to set up a radio show of music & trivia about the 60's anyway gotta run later, Neil

  • @jumbodrummer `60's music & trivia? Well, then, I'm your guy!! I have about 49,000 records in my collection and love the `60's and know quite a bit of trivia. Dig, there was a British psych band called, Argosy, that only recorded one single. After that single was released (on Congress Records here in the states, which later became MCA Records), the piano player quit to go solo. The band got a new pianist and changed their name to Supertramp. The pianist that quit was Elton John.

  • @RedVynil Very good Dale, I'm impressed, but if you can tell me (without looking it up) what name did Mr. Zimmerman use before he chose Dylan? If you can tell me then I will give you the honorary title of Trivia Cat of the Month... I have around 30,000 songs covering 80 years... nice start anyway n

  • @jumbodrummer I was never a Dylan person, I only like MAYBE 4 or 5 of his songs, so, I really couldn't tell you. At least I'm honest! Without looking it up, can you tell me what name Simon & Garfunkel used before they used those names?

My collection spans from about 1885 to the present.

  • @RedVynil would that have been Skip & Flip?

I believe (it's late) Dylan was known as Elston Gunn for a spell.

do you have a song by a 60's group Paladin? there's a song called "dance of the Cobra' and was one of my all time favorite drum solos. Can't even remember the dudes name.

  • @jumbodrummer I KNOW Skip & Flip's real names. Oh! One was Gary Paxton! He went on to front Hollywood Argyles (Alley Oop) & produce LOTS of other records I'm drawing a blank on the other guy's name, but, no, Simon & Garfunkle recorded on Big Top as Tom & Jerry. Then they went solo with other pseudonyms, Art was Artie Garr, I can't recall Paul's. I think I HAVE heard of Paladin. I'll have to ask my neighbor if he's got any by them. He's got 36,000 records. BTW, It's Eliston Gunnn. I checked.

  • @jumbodrummer He also used a ton of other names.

  • @jumbodrummer Keith Webb was the drummer for Paladin. They only recorded 2 albums between `71 and `72, "Palidin" and "Charge". He was also the drummer on two Terry Reid albums, "Terry Reid" (`69), "River" (`73) and the Donovan album, "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" (`67).

  • @RedVynil Thanks, any idea how I can get a copy?

I saw Terry Reid in '70 with the Stones, Ike & Tina @ LA Sports Areana.

  • @jumbodrummer No problem!! Either check on eBay or Gemm.com, or, here in Pittsburgh, I'd try Jerry's Records or The Attic. Jerry Weber run's Jerry's and Freddie Bohn runs The Attic. Fred usually charges book prices, but Jerry, having millions of records JUST in his store, only charges about $5.00 an album. I got the Beatles Christmas album there a few years ago for $25.00! That's at least a $100.00 album!! Jerry want to get the records into the hands of the collectors, Fred's more after cash.

  • @RedVynil Dale: Yeah Keith Webb. I'm really only interested in the tunes right now. Don't have the time or energy to start collecting albums. If only I would have kept all those Beatle albums in better shape. I bought the Christmas album at some little store in Hollywood around 71 or '72. It was green and the lable I think was yellow. a big black 1 & 2 no credits on the jacket that I remember. Someone ripped it off me many moons ago. I would like the album on a disk or my ipod though... n

  • @jumbodrummer I don't know where you could just get the songs, other than, iTunes, YouTube, Napster or maybe someone at the Record Collector's Guild has them.

My copy is an original Apple with a silver cover & lots of pictures of them on it. Sounds like yours was a bootleg. I'd need an addrees, but I can send you MP3s of the entire album & a few outtakes. I've got tons of other Beatles stuff, some of it's never been released before! I have the Get Back sessions & all of the Lost Lennon Tapes!

  • @RedVynil sounds good. I will have a new email from the Jumbo site soon.

We can yak all we want about this stuff. Don't want to get away from this sites intention which is LT. I still need to set something up someday that could help us find those old videos of all the bands we were with. Hey what about local tv stuff. Was that where your Pittburgh band did it?

    p.s. How 'bout those Steelers?

  • @jumbodrummer Groovy! Yeah, you'd think SOMEBODY would have them! Although, you'd think the same was also true for a very famous t.v. like The Avengers, but, sadly, most of the first season is gone forever. The BCC used tro erase their video tapes after the initial broadcast and re-use them for other shows. So far, nobody's stepped forward with recordings of those missing shows. I'm not sure what you mean about my band doing it. There's a scant possibilty that our local stations.... (Cont.)

  • @jumbodrummer ...might have copies of Lloyd's old shows (How's THAT for keeping it on topic?). Lloyd was making a DVD collection of his old shows when he died. I wonder if anybody else will pick up the ball and run with it. Rhino would be a great choice. We had some videos shot, but, I doubt they've been aired anywhere except public access t.v.. By the way, Paul Simon's old pseudonym was Jerry Landis! Hate to dissappoint, but I've never been much into sports. Music is my life. And comedy.

  • @jumbodrummer Outside of an occassional baseball game, shooting pool, flinging some Bee (Frisbee) and swimming, the only sports I get into are: broad chasing, Amish rake fights, dwarf tossing and naked Twister.

  • @RedVynil What! no cat juggling? (always loved martin)

  • @jumbodrummer I'm allergic to cats.

Don Martin? Dean Martin? George Martin? Steve Martin? Oh! It's Steve!! I forgot about the movie he did about the cat juggler. Dwarf tossing is more of a competition than a sport. It's the same as shot putting, except you use a dwarf instead of a shot put.

  • I didn't know Mr. Thaxton had passed away. I'm sad.

  • brings back memories, anybody remember the game on the show? lose your marbles your off your rocker, somebody post it please

  • Lloyd Thaxton was so cool! I was only 11 yrs old when these shows aired. I'd wait for it to come on TV and then I'd turn up the sound and dance around on the terrazzo floors. I could almost copy my 17 yr old sister's dance moves. Watching these kids dancing on the show makes me realize today's kids who don't dance are missing out - times wastin'- get up & just move it! Thank you Lloyd wherever you are for making my afternoons a little brighter while I danced around on my Mom's shiny floors.

  • @browneyedflagirl7 (-: I used to lay out an array of pots & pans and Crisco cans on the floor twixt me & the telly and, with pencils for drumsticks, played the drum parts on them to nearly everything they played. Not just Lloyd's show, ALL of the music shows back then. Something we, sadly, don't have anymore. American Bandstand, Where The Action Is, Hootenanny, Shindig, The Clark Race Show (Pittsburgh only) and maybe even The Monkees and The Banana Splits!!

  • Was that Lloyd on the exer-cycle? Who sings that song "Gone Away" originally?

Dying to see some more Lloyd footage, *particularly* the 13th Floor Elevators from this episode, which would be something of a holy grail to us psych fans.

Also, if anybody has any clips of "Boss City" with Sam Riddle and the Real Don Steele, "Groovy" with Michael Blodgett, "Happening '69" with Paul Revere and the Raiders or "Shiveree" with Kacey Kasem, could you please post? I for one would be forever indebted!!

  • "Shivaree" (1965-1966) was hosted by Gene Weed. Casey Kasem was the host of "Shebang" (1966-1967). There are numerous film clips from both of those programs on YouTube. "Shebang" was the first local show of this nature that was in color.

  • The song is by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, who were also named as guests on that show. The best known songs by Georgie Fame, at least in the U.S., were "Yeh Yeh" and "Bonnie and Clyde" (which was not from the movie of that name but was about it). I remember once seeing a girl lip sync to "Don't Think Twice" by the Wonder Who, which was really the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli singing higher than ever.

  • Agree on your elevators foot note. that would be incredible.

  • pioneer in lip-synching as ...um, entertainment...

  • Thanks for posting this. Would you please upload the 13th Floor Elevators clip if you have it? Much appreciated!

  • Lloyd Thaxton was the best!...He was a real inspiration to me.

  • This clip just makes me want more. Oh how I wish he could've gotten the DVD out. :(

  • Wow, Does that bring back memories! I loved his show.

  • This guy was awesome. So much better than Dick Clark. He used to do bits with greeting cards with the mouths cut out that would move up and down and lyp sync songs and once he dressed up as a Viking and lyp synced Cara Mia by Jay and the Americans that was a riot. I hadn't heard he died. May he rest in peace. He was under rated one of the best.

  • Wait...when I say "to the right" I mean his right which would be the viewers left.

  • I have been lucky to find this video, thanks to my mom. I am suprised however that no one has commented on the girl to the right of his leg. Her dance moves are insane, she makes this video worth watching.

  • I watched her as well. She knew how to shake what her mama gave her.

  • Lloyd's syndicated series was also carried on WPIX-TV in New York early Saturday evenings...

  • I didn't know Lloyd Thaxton had passed away until I googled his name in. I remember this show as well as the two ABC game shows he hosted: "Everybody's Talking" and "Funny You Should Ask". He always seemed to have fun with whatever he was doing.

  • he produced the consumer advocate show fight back with david horowitz

  • Does anyone know if his work in progress was completed, i.e. the video(s) from his show?

  • unfortunately Lloyd scraped the DVD project when his health turned bad earlier this year. Also he was having difficulty getting copywriters to sign off on the project. What a shame. It would have been a great dvd

  • the skit with him in the rocking chair singing "there`s a hole in the bucket" dear Henry; was one of the classiest moments on 60`s TV

  • I remember that one well. Has it really been forty years?

  • Thank you for posting this on You Tube - In his memory we have made it the video pick of the week here at Rock-it Radio. As we are paying tribute to him all week long.

  • A part of my childhood...gone today. R.I.P. Lloyd Thaxton. You were great fun!

  • Actually, what he's lip-synching to is "Getaway" by Georgie Fame.

  • Duly noted and amended. Thanks.
