This was an accurrate depiction of the first day of basic.This kind of treatment is necessary to get the complete attention of the average young person. The other reasons, as depicted in the film, are that you could get killed and may have to kill. And you will be killing someone who is in no way wronging you personally. Neither the Vietnam wars or the Gulf wars were in defence of a western nation they were just innocent people being sent to die over politics.
