I love how Knightley understands exactly what Emma needs to pull her out of a slump. "...looks like you're in need of a project..." he reads her like a book.
I think this adaptation does a fabulous job of showing how Knightly's feelings develop. I think that it's largely to do with the fact that it's six hours long, so they really had time to explore the relationship in depth.
@raymonda100 i agree! the emma thompson adaption of sense and sensibility was wonderful and this movie is right up there with it! i was saying one day that emma thompson is such a good screen writer and that shes so good st doing austen that she really should just take on all the austen novels
I think they prob'ly used a round the way shot (camera on a circle track) and then timelasped it into a previous shot of Knightly and Emma dancing. It requires perfect timing but isn't that difficult to do these days. It is beautifully done :)
@boya307 There's no sound, just the background music, so they could have done almost anything - rolled up to him with a camera on a wheeled tripod maybe, or even walked up to him and around him, which might account for some of the instability as they're approaching him (the camera goes up and down slightly - the horizontal panel above the door bobs). There's special poles you can put the camera on that balances out most of the jiggling when you walk but not all, which might be what we see there.
You can really see the affection on his face when she talks about what is - essentially - her loneliness. She might be a social butterfly, but even she realizes that the only people who really know and love her are her father, Mrs. Weston, and Mr. Knightly. It's such a beautiful moment that really adds a lot to this adaptation.
I for one, has always wondered about her lack of desire to travel. Granted that she never intends to leave her father, it shouldn't deter one from occasional short trips. But then again, I speak for my generation I guess.
Emma's hair is actually too modern for the period. I suspect they did it to make her more attractive for a younger audience. Harriet's is more accurate.
@yvrguynow I agree; the costuming is so accurate (in my opinion) but her hair seems so wrong to me too. I think the real problem is that in real life it must be too short to do much with except for barely have it off her neck in a ponytail, and a fake wrap around it at all times...LOL But her personality and natural beauty make up for historical accuracy; And that's a lot considering I'm a natural blonde who can't bear to go out in public without mascara!
I love how Emma says she's in love with Churchill, yet she is ok with the thought of Harriet liking Frank.

I also love how Knightley nods his head in agreement when she says "...and we will only invite people that we like."
