I give Bireli credit for being original in his approach. I'm new to him, so I'm looking for a kind of "swing" feel. He seems to lag behind the beat in a way I'm not used to. I'll have to listen to this some more and check out more of his music to see if I'm right. But I certainly respect his credentials and right to approach the music in his own way, with honest integrity and respect for the music.
@Streamline09 This is niiice, maan. For a BL baptism, check out this rendition of Stella by Starlight if you haven't already. With drummer Andre Ceccarelli
Haha, 4:32 till 4:40 short passage of baroque guitar ! Bireli is one of the greatest living guitar heroes. Autumn leaves has been played a million times before and it is necessary to get new ideas new chords. No problem for bireli. the drums are upper class too.thanks
one of the greatests drummers lisedt & learn youngsters .if u wanna go forward u have to go back in time to discover the amazing heritage that those people left to the music so the nu cats can keep it going. ;-)
I know Biréli is a genius, and I love him to death, and I can certainly also say the same for Roy Hanes buuuuuuut. I feel like the first two minutes should have be mixed throughout the bulk of what is a beautiful guitar 'n' drums interpretation of Autumn Leaves. While it's one of those things I love about jazz, being wacky for the sake of being wacky can sound really pretentious.
Thumbs up if you get where I'm coming from, even if you disagree!
i´m sorry, i really like Biréli Lagrène and Roy Haynes, but the first 2 minutes Roy was playing anything but a proper rhythm to autumn leaves! Maybe it was meant that way though....
I liked this very much. They kind of felt their way into it. I think that's the way jazz in small groups should be played.
Robben Ford said in an interview once that when he first played with Miles Davis he met him before the gig and the only thing that Davis wanted to know was what Ford was going to wear onstage. lol.

mmh, I don't really like the drums... it all sounds like they're just playing their own thing and not minding each other.. Well at least until 3:00 - after that it starts getting a lot better ^^.
yes indeed and today NOONE CAN DO THIS W/ THE APPROACHES TO MUSIC IT astonishes me what they need, just to sound so bad....alot to see and learn here for those who can Hear..
This is awesome! I saw a great gig with Pat Metheny and Roy Haynes at the Van Dyck in Schenectady, NY. Since Roy isn't getting any younger and that club is no longer open, I'm very glad I went.
That stage is awesome

The way he times and plays that first 251 at 1:38 is a heart-jerking moment of music to me. What a great interpretation of my favorite tune!

anyone know if that's a zildjian k custom(?) flat ride?.. and why the hell it swings so hard? :)
daniel101088 9 months ago
@daniel101088 I think it is the famous 20" K Custom Flat Ride.
And for the magnitude, he is covering up for the bass player to create some ambient that keeps the swing.

I would say that his problem (in this performance at least) is that he trys too hard to play against the time.

Im not saying that he isnt a good player or nothing. He is terrific, one of the best players in the world.
