In a flex state, you could exert the whole weight of your arm.So for example if the weight of your arm is 20 pounds, when you flex your arms it becomes lighter and reduces the weight of your arm by half. So even how hard a boxer swings their arm, their power is reduced to half because of their flexed state and their power is only enough to hurt someone in the surface,Wing Chun is taught be to focused into one central point and is meant to do not just damage to surface, but also internal damage.
lol some people don't understand the concept of Wing Chun. They think one punch from a boxer equals to 20 punches of Wing Chun. The Wing Chun punch is exerted with a force proportionate of twice the power of a boxer punch because Wing Chun is in a relaxed state and we could use the whole weight of our arms to punch. You can test this by simply flexing your two arms with it pointing to the air, and use the other arm to swing it sidewards and do the same for the non flexed state.
@buffmeticYou got it totaly wrong. Traditional Wing Chun is based on arm close fight, what Bruce Lee advanced in legs (JKD) with a different philosophy (not a close fight) but his close main ability and arm strikes is wing chun. Chuck Norris said Bruce lee (once alive) cannot be bitten by any man on earth. Really who am i and you to disagree with what Chuck Norris said? In the movies to see his wing chun you have to play slow motion. Don t forget some strikes was made only for the movie.
ii) turn them turn them turn them. smother their arms, quickly get them to block then turn them. A boxer blocking is rigid upper body and has horrible legs, and can be wrong-footed easily. You should always be looking at their back and always as you turn them be expecting a sly smack from them.
Anyway, my thoughts for sparring. In real life of course, well you know what to do. Injure them quickly.
My observations on fighting a conditioned boxer if any other practitioners are here and interested:
As fast as you and pretty much deadly to stand and trade blows with (ouch).
Entry is through a long straight punch, and you must smother both of their arms
i) be VERY careful of where you contact their and be ready to ride and switch because they will power through or swing around any block you haven't executed with their punching style in mind and some you have
Oh boy, I got in here cause I thought I would finally see a real fight of super deadly wing chun against boxing. But then again, it is super deadly wing chun wining....in movies!!
this movie is a bit theatrical but this event did happen...... Half the comments on here are from people who spend there days fapping to Boxing. Its a damn movie, fuck. Bruce Lee is dead he is not going to fight Mike Tyson or Mohammed Ali, So please. Show the man some respect.
Respect to all martial arts was his philosophy in the movie. It would have been good to see the rest. After a while the judges said no kicking or you're disqualified. :)
Yipman never fought a western boxer in real life and boxing is much more defensive and fluid then that. However even though boxing has some of the most powerful punches and conditioning in the martial arts world they never work on things like grappling, kicking, or ground work and that's why I think wing chun wins (even though this vid is a highly inaccurate portrayal of boxing)
@TheWeeklyLawReports Actually, quite the contrary, boxing, Muay thai, and kickboxing are examples of highly fluid coordinated striking combos. In other words, you want a fast succession of strikes, Wing Chun is one example, but boxing is also very fast. This movie is just depicting the guy fighting like Rocky Balboa, which is one movie myth of boxing. It's actually highly reserved and protected, with fast efficient counter striking with closed fist strikes. Don't be fooled. Respect to all arts!
@Iraqendwar Well the reality is that some things make more of a difference than people allow for:
1. Natural fighting ability
2. Discipline and conditioning (this is what a boxer uses, he turns his body into a weapon).
I don't know how Wing Tsun, Bokator etc. can be matched against boxing.
Every move I would do to end a fight with a boxer would be illegal in any sport and result in broken bones, windpipe, blindness etc. Combat martial arts don't work as sports, amirite?
2. Well then. So what if Wing Tsun uses discipline and body conditioning as well? For me, I combine boxing with Wing Tsun...how's that? Hooks for going around defenses. Shifts from wing chun to further support those hooks...
Right u are. Combat martial arts NEVER work as sports. I guess I try to tell this to MMA guys, but they never listen.
Learn to master the art and not let the art master you. No fighting form is greater than the other, it is the fighter that is important. If a boxer wins a thousand matches but losses against a Wing Chun fighter, it does not mean that boxing is lousier than Wing Chun, it simply means the fighter was good at Wing Chun. Similarly if a Wing Chun fighter losses to a boxing champion it doesn't mean that boxing is better, it only means that the boxer is very good at boxing.
@BootShark What about a fight between the winning boxer and the winner of wing chun to see which is best? :P just kidding bro....I strongly agree with what you mentioned, though :)
If this is a real fight, donnie will probably use his MMA style from his flashpoint movie and not wing chun, and the boxer will get get killed instead of knockout.
10 - 20 punches from wing shun = 1 punch from boxer style.
That means you can die by 1 punch from mike tyson rather than dozen punch from wing shun.
I don't favor boxer style to be the best one but the essence of wing shun is to realize the matter of life and to help weaker people all around.
Particularly, its philosophy of Bhuddism lies within significantly. Whoever practice this, It can calm you down in hard situation, bring you a great compassion and so on.
@kvsm23vs24 if he could build muscle on his jaw, nose and eyes, knees, shins, throat , ears.....etc ...he could have won.. body size only matters when two fighers have not been trained.
@diulesing7 You ever been in a fight? There is a reason boxers have weight divisions. A trained Manny could never take on a trained Tyson. Body size does matter. If you are bigger and stronger it takes more for you to get hurt and easier to hurt others
@kvsm23vs24 boxing is not a fight, its a sport...imagine bruce lee landed a sidekick on mike typons face before mike finished saying.." hey..yoo..u mother.fukcer..then " bang....!!!".. mike dunno where he is...
@diulesing7 Then why did Bruce Lee change his main style of striking to boxing? He started with a heavy Wing Tsun background and when he advanced his JKD he incoperated most of his hand strikes from American Boxing.... Bruce Lee was a revolutionary thinker and did wonders for Martial Arts but he was not and is not the greatest fighter ever. If he was that amazing he would have dominated the full contact circut.
@Kamionikage im just saying he is wearing like 20 ounce gloves thats all, is pretty funny.I he was waswearing 8 to 10 ounces (standard i wouldnt have say anything)
To be real, there is no Kung Fu fighter that can beat a Boxer in the ring.
The most used techniques for ring/cage are Boxing,Judo,Muay Thai,Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,Kickboxing...
If you ask why, i will tell you why!
Its simple they are the best technique's for a fight in a ring/cage with gloves.
Kung Fu doesn't use gloves, also they have techniques for using weapons. Actually Kung Fu is a technique for killing and it was used in War's long time ago. The same goes and for Ninjutsu.
The rules during this fight were so stupid...haflway through after Twister had taken a few kicks to the face the Brit told the ref to ban kicking... so the wrestler could have a much larger striking surface but Ip Man couldn't use his 2 other limbs?
no style trying to say who is the best, at least wing chun dont. But i hear/read a lot of MMA style is the best and etc....So? yup!? so!!? what else MMA then?
If u go to wikipedia and read about the film, there is written how much didn't actually happend for real.
i loved the film, and i think Ip Man was a great man, but i still think that MMA will against any martial arts if both have trained for at least 7-10 years and i think many agree with me on that part and if you watch UFC 1-4 you will see thatt BJJ won any style that was participating back then, and from there camed MMA, the ultimate Martial art.
Yea. I'm just never going to be sold that MMA is an "Art"
People who only like the raw violence of it, like it.
All "skill" eventually goes out the window and it becomes a fight of "who can sit on who the longest, punching them in the face or maybe choking them out"
I think that's why most people still like or give more tec respect to boxes and real martial artists.
I know rules suck, but its because of those rules, the sense of fair play, that makes them better.
Rules are what makes the other things, better sports.
And its not really mortal combat, a good portion of moves taken from martial arts, aren't allowed:
I mean, MMA isn't "THUNDER DOME" which would be real mortal combat.
I guess I just wish the rules about going to the ground, would be sped up, like in wrestling; you only have a short period of time to do what you need/want and if you can't, everyone gets back.
Nobody ever shuts the fuck up and watches the god damn film, it really depends who fights who, anyone can fight. But if a weak man that knew boxing against a strong man with wing chun then you can say boxing is superior or vice versa. There is no dominate fight style.
Donnie is allowed to trip the shit out of this guy and use his elbows and grapple and so on, but can't kick him; meanwhile, all the boxer can do is BOX? I don't see him using elbows, ect----and don't tell me this has to do with style, this is really a cage match, accept the guys are trying to stick to their arts, rather than roll around on the ground with eachother.
Either they would both be wearing gloves, or not.
Its just like a boxing match...unless are saying from the get-go, that the boxers punches are too deadly = to the other guys kicks, but than why can't he kick and if he could, wouldn't he be wearing pads on them to be equal?
Yea and I'm sure an uppercut from the boxer, without gloves, would be alot more affective too.
None of this make sense, cause no fighter, would ever allow his opponent, to have any kinda advantage...unless in the movie, the boxer character, said "Its ok, I'll wear them" or "Its ok, the little guy doesn't need gloves"
Really, I think what they were saying, is, that with gloves, the fight is equal.
Without would be unfair: the Boxer would win more than 50% (7/10) of the time.
2) Name any other reason why a boxer would CHOOSE to wear gloves, while his OPPONENT was allowed to go without...other than, the boxer being so confident with his skills vs such a smaller fighter, that he'd be ok with it?
3) Yes my %'s are a guess, but they’re based on the fact real comp fighters, MUST WEAR GLOVES not to seriously hurt one another, yet in every movie like this: Boxer vs martial arts, the later is allowed to go without. WHY?
@willdrake1 jesus it's not real you know. are you gonna cry that a film is depicting martial arts differently than you believe it to me or that it really is? it's a film! do you know how much bullshit comes from films?
@willdrake1 Boxers wear gloves to avoid injury. In Wing Chun, fighters place their thumbs on top of their index finger. By doing so, the wrist is stronger.
1) Yes. The injury they would inflict upon one another; not so much themselves---that first time you put your thumb under your fingers is the last; and pro boxers don't do that.
2) Yes. In WC the fighter moves his thumb as apart of his technique, though you would have to show me some scientific proof to backup your claim it makes his wrist any stronger vs normal punching.
3) None of this explains why a boxer would wear gloves when his opponent who goes without?
@willdrake1 Wing Chun is very dependent on fighting without gloves, its about feeling your opponent (yea sounds weird i know) but if your used to hitting with gloves and you start fighting without, especially with the strenght that boxers hit, it might have some nasty consequences for the boxer his hands. But in reality he probably would have fought without, yes :)
Boxers train without gloves, in various ways, to strengthen their hands, wrists to resist the amount of force which is applied with every hit, so gloves or no, their built to punch; so I don't buy they do so to protect their fragile hands---it’s done so they don't kill/seriously injure their opponent...cause it’s a sport, not "Thunder Dome"
The question stills stands: Why is the Boxer, in all these M.A movies, never without his gloves though his opponent is? Meaning? Conveys?
On the street with no rules, and no gloves, I think a fighter who has the same amount of training experience in Wing Chun would defeat another fighter with equal amount of training experience in a nother martial art - Which is a sport.
The reason for that, is when the sport martial arts are training, they train under a ruleset, therefore giving the figthers habits of fighting under a ruleset, where Wing Chun would rip your balls off if they had to.
Why is everyone calling Wing chun dirty? the only thing i would see shameful is a hit to the jewels. In a fight it doesn't matter where the hell you hit be it the ribs, the bicepts, etc.
kung fu is the art of developing healthy mind & body. its a kind of sport. in the Philippines we have a knife fighting technique and the sole purpose of which is to kill a man. its not an art. its simply a very effective way to kill a man. The so called Filipino Martial Art (MMA) is basically not an art. its just a very simple and effective way to kill an opponent.
I have a friend that he thinks that Wing chun and all martial arts are just bullshit......heh....hes has no idea. When he will try to puch me.I will have already hit him atleast 20 TIMES and in no time. his already defeated.....well......box sucks
@leontas2007 tell your friend that the word 'martial' otherwise stands for 'military', or an 'art crafted by war' and is meant for killing or disabling your opponent. Not jumping/dancing on a ring 3 minutes per round.
Omfg shut the hell up on mma already Kung fu techniques are dirty and are used to kill mma and other western combat sports are used to compete put the math together
Sammo Hung did the fight choreography for one of the old Jackie Chan films called The Meals on Wheels. The martial arts Jackie Chan was using in the film and against Benny Urquidez resembled some sort of Kickboxing, which looked similar but a little different from Benny Urquidez kickboxing system. According to Sammo Hung, it was a western version of Wing Chun to introduce the art to the Western audiences. Well, I liked that version of Wing Chun better than the traditional one.
@theroadhouse1989 : Actually, it was Jeet Kune Do. Sammo Hung did learn some Jeet Kune Do moves from Bruce Lee. I know, I know. Jeet Kune Do is a philosophy, not techniques. But there had been Bruce Lee's favorite show-off techniques such as lead front, roundhouse, hook and side kicks and shadow boxing of blocking, parrying, jabbing, and punching techniques. Sammo Hung even taught Bruce Lee imitations these little movements in the set of completing The Game of Death.
I like the fact Chinese martial arts films put Caucasian boxers and kickboxers as if they were their ultimate challenges. LOL! Jackie Chan has put Bill Wallace, Gary Daniels, and Benny Urquidez (twice) in his films.
Unfortunately, I have to give this movie big thumbs down because it gave the English boxer character too much credit. Even if it was just Wing Chun, all the Yip Man had to do was just a simple front kick to the boxer's groin and the fight would've been over within one minute! (I've knocked out a gigantic black boxer in a street fight with the same technique. I was scared, and it was one weak snap kick, but luckily, the front tip of my tennis shoes hit his balls. He went down in pain. Hew!)
@bloodhoun138 : I used to. Not any more. It's a waste of time and money. Get enrolled in a good MMA gym and you'll learn tons of things to destroy your rabbit punching opponent. Such as a weaving and a solid hook punch to the Wing Chun fool's jaw.
@FastStraightPunches Thanks for the advice, I was just wondering if i was good enough because i was going to enroll in a MMA class or try to go to a Martial Arts study
Anyway, if Wing Chun was such a great martial arts, I'm sure Bruce would've stuck with it. But he felt a definite need to learn other martial arts, even Western Boxing and Wrestling. That's why he became the greatest. Unlike typical Chinese martial artists who valued their pride and tradition, Bruce was open-minded. He even studied Japanese Jujitsu. For a Chinese guy to learn something Japanese was unthinkable at that time, but Bruce did it anyway. He was one intelligent being!
Well, this is true. A Kung-fu master's ultimate goal is being able to exchange blows with a professional boxer without getting killed or knocked out. Pretty depressing really.
So what's this movie trying to say? The skilled Kung-fu masters can get beaten to death by some white boxer??? And Yip Man barely, just barely defended himself against the boxer? Watch the full movie. Yip Man was getting knocked down and flown unconscious several times!
1. TELL ME THE NAME OF THIS MOVIE I MUST BUY IT!. 2. fuck i wish i could learn wing chun right now. im leaving in 4 months to learn in another country. my boxing instructor told me that the wing chun short range elbow bent punches were ineffective. i told him how it wasnt he didnt listen. i should show him this.,
Wing Chun vs Boxer: This is an embarrassing scene for Yip Man and Wing Chun. But they put this scene anyway. So I guess it was based on a true story. I guess Yip Man did get punced hard and flew away unconscious several times.
I'll quit Wing Chun and sign up for Boxing class tomorrow!
Hey, guys, calm down. In addition to Wing Chun, Bruce Lee adopted western boxing and wrestling as well as weight training and other western strength training. Well, there's gotta be a reason for that!!!!!!!!!
Let's give this English boxer some credit. Let's suppose he was one of the best boxers in England (Most likely NOT!). If he was fighting someone like Cung Le, BJ Penn, Dong Hyun Kim, or Yushin Okami that day instead of Yip Man. He would've been choked out or broken his arm in half within 5 minutes!
A lot of Tae Kwon Do instructors opened their schools in U.S. in 70's, and there have been some local punkass boxers who challenged them. Many people these days think Tae Kwon Do is the most useless martial arts in hand to hand combat, but amazingly, they all beat the crap out of the boxers who challenged them. Check it out. True stories.
Gee, this movie will give English people a good laugh. The English boxer was beating the crap out of the Wing Chun master who destroyed ten Japanese Karate blackbelts instantly. And the boxer killed Sammo Hung who was also a Kung-fu master! I know Martial Arts isn't about fighting, but this is ridiculous! Oh, BTW, there're many true stories of small Korean Tae Kwon Do instructors who knocked out local punkass challenging boxers with spinning back kicks to their heads! Check it out!
So I guess it's a true story that Yip Man fought a Western Boxer. The story is believable because Yip Man kept getting beat up. If this was purely fictional supposedly, Yip Man would've killed the boxer within 5 seconds, of course, without getting hit.
In the film, this boxer killed Sammo Hung's character who had the same skill as Yip Man. And Yip Man barely barely managed to knock out the boxer after getting his ass kicked over and over. So what's the point? The master of masters in Kung-fu can barely beat up some unknown boxer?? No wonder Bruce Lee also studied in Western Boxing! LMAO!
@JeetKuneDoKa the story goes like this, the only reason bruce lee practice western boxin was bc he didnt like the fundamentals of wing chun. wing chun is also only defence using ur opponets body against him.
Bruce beat ip man eventually if u didnt know that. he was the only one who did. He never needed to add western boxing but he did bc he thought wing chun had its own flaws.
O_O bruce lee never beat ip man. wtf are you smoking dude. bruce lee found wing chun flawed when he was in a fight against a northern kung fu style master in america in chinatown. The fight lasted 4-5 minutes and he thought it should've lasted only 10 seconds.
@MrHoppers002 : That's how I heard. Bruce Lee said he was chasing him while he kept striking the back of the coward's skull. Soon, Bruce Lee's knuckles got swollen.
No matter how highly Wing Chun is praised, it never impressed me. I do punch with vertical fist occasionally but the mechanic is totally different from Wing Chun's. Mine is more natural and powerful. Instead of Wing Chun's trademark rabbit punches, I hit hard and fast, hitting the target such as nose, chin, or eyeball.
@FastStraightPunches Everyone has their own style and preference, no reason to blame the martial art, Wing chun and many others are quite efficient if done correctly. Some may go into karate but can't get used to it, but feel more comfortable with muay thai its more the fighter rather than the style. Bruce lee said so himself, and there's nothing wrong with taking several different martial arts, i wanted to take all muay thai, systema, wushu, etc.
@HopefulNinja THANK YOU GOOD SIR YOU SHOULD HAVE THE HIGHEST RATED COMMENT IN ALL OF THE MARTIAL ART VS MARTIAL ART VIDEOS. You see IP Man and Bruce Lee wooping ass with Wing Chun you see see Jackie Chan in Kung Fu/Wushu, you see Mike Tyson in Boxing. Everyone has they own fighting style and shit just because you woop ass in one of them wait till you see another guy woop ass in his.
What the fuck, why does the boxer, who only uses hands have to wear gloves, where as IP man gets to use both hands feet and head with no covering. Fucking retarded.
boxing is only made for BOXING nothing more and thus Wing chun can block punches no matter how strong the disadvantage of BOXING is that it cannot be as swift moving as wing chun and kung fu can do for BOXING IS ONLY FOR THE SPORTS BOXING
Ip Man won simply because its not a real fight. Its a movie, for christ's sake! Btw, is there a historical basis for this fight? Was there a REAL FIGHT that took place in Hong Kong or China in which a Chinese kung fu master beat a British boxing champion inside the ring? Or is this merely another good cinematic propaganda by the Chinese movie industry? Do Chinese have a video recorded fight between a British boxing champ and a Chinese Kung Fu master in which the latter won?
@xpressivist there might have been some fights, but most of it never happend, Yip man never fought westerners as far as i know. There is a story about a Wing Chun master (student from Yip man) who beat a Russian boxer, but this was never recorded. Most fights that used to happen in especially Hong Kong in the 50s, 60s and early 70s (without rules) were never recorded, although there were many but tehy were illegal. They used to have fights all over China on high platforms, till death sometimes
Is there a historical basis for this fight? Was there a REAL FIGHT that took place in Hong Kong or China in which a Chinese kung fu master beat a British boxing champion inside the ring? Or is this merely another good cinematic propaganda by the Chinese movie industry? @xpressivist I'm not sure, but if you ever watched Jet Li's Fearless, it was the same match. That was based on Huo Yuanjia back in the early 1900's. He challenged two foreign fighters, a Russian wrestler and and British boxer, but they forfeited and wouldn't fight him.
@kromen10 In other words such a fight never took place and that there never was a real and factual historical event on which this movie is based. I don't think it is based on the mythical stories about Huo Yuanjia. There never was a recorded actual fight that took place between a British boxer named O'Brien and Huo Yuanjia.
@xpressivist Calm down, it's a movie, not a documentary. Much of history in that time was exaggerated. The body count of Billy the Kid is much lower than people first reported too, but nobodies raising a stink over it.
@kromen10 Which only means that Chinese movies like this one is a propaganda by the the Chinese movie industry. Its aim is to give the impression that people like us should never mess with China because we will never win. China is making all the mistakes that imperialists like Britain and the USA made in the past. They spread lies in order to dominate other cultures and nations.
what really determines the fight is who's conditoined better. Who hits harder. Who can take more hits. Also who hits faster. now based on this fight scene alone. Let's forget the styles. Ip man wins cause he hits way faster, gets hit fewer times, hits harder because he's bare knuckle. Now no doubt twister is way better conditioned than ip man. He's packing muscles but he's too slow. Key word slow.

@bublegumjp You said: I dont know wing chun but...
An experienced master of MUAY BORAN can pulverize every fucking boxer including Myke Tyson or Klitschko brothers, look at this:
.Then...what about an experienced boxer vs a Muay Boran artist? Or.....a more experienced boxer vs a Muay Boran artist who is less experienced?

@Iraqendwar Well the reality is that some things make more of a difference than people allow for:
1. Natural fighting ability
2. Discipline and conditioning (this is what a boxer uses, he turns his body into a weapon).
I don't know how Wing Tsun, Bokator etc. can be matched against boxing.
Every move I would do to end a fight with a boxer would be illegal in any sport and result in broken bones, windpipe, blindness etc. Combat martial arts don't work as sports, amirite?
tceBansai 5 months ago
@tceBansai

I agree with BootShark completely.. No martial art is better than the next there are just better Martial Artists.
MrJliv33 7 months ago
The point is to free ourselves from styles, forms, differences and use what is best for you.
BootShark 7 months ago
Learn to master the art and not let the art master you. No fighting form is greater than the other, it is the fighter that is important. If a boxer wins a thousand matches but losses against a Wing Chun fighter, it does not mean that boxing is lousier than Wing Chun, it simply means the fighter was good at Wing Chun. Similarly if a Wing Chun fighter losses to a boxing champion it doesn't mean that boxing is better, it only means that the boxer is very good at boxing.
BootShark 7 months ago 4
@BootShark What about a fight between the winning boxer and the winner of wing chun to see which is best? :P just kidding bro....I strongly agree with what you mentioned, though :)
arr4evr 7 months ago
If this is a real fight, donnie will probably use his MMA style from his flashpoint movie and not wing chun, and the boxer will get get killed instead of knockout.
jetyan 7 months ago
For a reasonable thinking...

@diulesing7 You ever been in a fight? There is a reason boxers have weight divisions. A trained Manny could never take on a trained Tyson. Body size does matter. If you are bigger and stronger it takes more for you to get hurt and easier to hurt others

diulesing7 7 months ago 16
@diulesing7 Then why did Bruce Lee change his main style of striking to boxing? He started with a heavy Wing Tsun background and when he advanced his JKD he incoperated most of his hand strikes from American Boxing.... Bruce Lee was a revolutionary thinker and did wonders for Martial Arts but he was not and is not the greatest fighter ever. If he was that amazing he would have dominated the full contact circut.

The same goes and for Ninjutsu.

i loved the film, and i think Ip Man was a great man, but i still think that MMA will against any martial arts if both have trained for at least 7-10 years and i think many agree with me on that part and if you watch UFC 1-4 you will see thatt BJJ won any style that was participating back then, and from there camed MMA, the ultimate Martial art.
RozbehOA 9 months ago
@RozbehOA
I know rules suck, but its because of those rules, the sense of fair play, that makes them better.
willdrake1 9 months ago
@willdrake1 that makes it sport, not better. Rules suck and thats why mortal kombat was invented.
Chachuization 9 months ago
@Chachuization
True. I will give you that.
Rules are what makes the other things, better sports.
And its not really mortal combat, a good portion of moves taken from martial arts, aren't allowed:
I mean, MMA isn't "THUNDER DOME" which would be real mortal combat.
I guess I just wish the rules about going to the ground, would be sped up, like in wrestling; you only have a short period of time to do what you need/want and if you can't, everyone gets back.

kamehameha123456 9 months ago
Watching it again. I think its kinda funny.
Donnie is allowed to trip the shit out of this guy and use his elbows and grapple and so on, but can't kick him; meanwhile, all the boxer can do is BOX? I don't see him using elbows, ect----and don't tell me this has to do with style, this is really a cage match, accept the guys are trying to stick to their arts, rather than roll around on the ground with eachother.

kitth3 10 months ago
I think this is great.
But why is the boxer wearing gloves?
Either they would both be wearing gloves, or not.
Its just like a boxing match...unless are saying from the get-go, that the boxers punches are too deadly = to the other guys kicks, but than why can't he kick and if he could, wouldn't he be wearing pads on them to be equal?
willdrake1 10 months ago
@willdrake1 In Chinese Kung Fu, we use the back of the hand, palm, finger and wrist to be advantage. So if Donnie Yen wear glove, he can lose too. :D
mhaosung 10 months ago 20
@mhaosung
Without would be unfair: the Boxer would win more than 50% (7/10) of the time.
willdrake1 10 months ago
@willdrake1 just shut up please. I hate made up shit like that 50% you just came up with. Like you have any basis for that whatsoever
Obsidian1392 9 months ago
@Obsidian1392
1) NO ONE WAS TALKING TO YOU NUMB NUTS!
WHY?
willdrake1 9 months ago
@willdrake1 jesus it's not real you know. are you gonna cry that a film is depicting martial arts differently than you believe it to me or that it really is? it's a film! do you know how much bullshit comes from films?
Obsidian1392 9 months ago
@Obsidian1392
1) How childish: Ofcourse its not real, No one is suggesting the MOVIE is real, but that's not the point.
2) You didn't answer any of my legitimate questions based upon perception and presentation.
3) If you don't care, GET OUT OF THE DEBATE. No one is talking to you.
To others:
The boxer always wears gloves for one of two reasons:
A) Show the physical superiority/arrogance of his punches.
B) How stupid he is to agree to wear them, while the mixed-fighter goes without.
willdrake1 9 months ago
@willdrake1 Boxers wear gloves to avoid injury. In Wing Chun, fighters place their thumbs on top of their index finger. By doing so, the wrist is stronger.
bboytrigger123 9 months ago
@bboytrigger123
3) None of this explains why a boxer would wear gloves when his opponent who goes without?
willdrake1 9 months ago
@willdrake1 Wing Chun is very dependent on fighting without gloves, its about feeling your opponent (yea sounds weird i know) but if your used to hitting with gloves and you start fighting without, especially with the strenght that boxers hit, it might have some nasty consequences for the boxer his hands. But in reality he probably would have fought without, yes :)
lamasingz 8 months ago
@lamasingz
Meaning? Conveys?

eppsislike 8 months ago
On the street with no rules, and no gloves, I think a fighter who has the same amount of training experience in Wing Chun would defeat another fighter with equal amount of training experience in a nother martial art - Which is a sport.
The reason for that, is when the sport martial arts are training, they train under a ruleset, therefore giving the figthers habits of fighting under a ruleset, where Wing Chun would rip your balls off if they had to.

kung fu is the art of developing healthy mind & body. its a kind of sport. in the Philippines we have a knife fighting technique and the sole purpose of which is to kill a man. its not an art. its simply a very effective way to kill a man. Well, I liked that version of Wing Chun better than the traditional one.
theroadhouse1989 10 months ago
@theroadhouse1989 : Actually, it was Jeet Kune Do. Sammo Hung did learn some Jeet Kune Do moves from Bruce Lee. I know, I know. Jeet Kune Do is a philosophy, not techniques. But there had been Bruce Lee's favorite show-off techniques such as lead front, roundhouse, hook and side kicks and shadow boxing of blocking, parrying, jabbing, and punching techniques. Sammo Hung even taught Bruce Lee imitations these little movements in the set of completing The Game of Death.

ShootFighterBas 10 months ago
Unfortunately, I have to give this movie big thumbs down because it gave the English boxer character too much credit. Even if it was just Wing Chun, all the Yip Man had to do was just a simple front kick to the boxer's groin and the fight would've been over within one minute! (I've knocked out a gigantic black boxer in a street fight with the same technique. I was scared, and it was one weak snap kick, but luckily, the front tip of my tennis shoes hit his balls. He went down in pain. Hew!)

@FastStraightPunches You study the Wing Chun style? Where do you specificly have to go to learn this style?
bloodhoun138 10 months ago
@bloodhoun138 : I used to. Not any more. It's a waste of time and money. Get enrolled in a good MMA gym and you'll learn tons of things to destroy your rabbit punching opponent. Such as a weaving and a solid hook punch to the Wing Chun fool's jaw.
FastStraightPunches 10 months ago
@FastStraightPunches Thanks for the advice, I was just wondering if i was good enough because i was going to enroll in a MMA class or try to go to a Martial Arts study
bloodhoun138 10 months ago
Anyway, if Wing Chun was such a great martial arts, I'm sure Bruce would've stuck with it. But he felt a definite need to learn other martial arts, even Western Boxing and Wrestling. That's why he became the greatest. Unlike typical Chinese martial artists who valued their pride and tradition, Bruce was open-minded. He even studied Japanese Jujitsu. For a Chinese guy to learn something Japanese was unthinkable at that time, but Bruce did it anyway. He was one intelligent being!

He would've been choked out or broken his arm in half within 5 minutes!
masterofkenpokarate 10 months ago
well that's not really fair since you're putting boxing up against grappling arts. it's striking vs striking art no striking vs. grappling

-continued from my previous comment-
A lot of Tae Kwon Do instructors opened their schools in U.S. in 70's, and there have been some local punkass boxers who challenged them. Many people these days think Tae Kwon Do is the most useless martial arts in hand to hand combat, but amazingly, they all beat the crap out of the boxers who challenged them. Check it out. True stories.
masterofkenpokarate 10 months ago
Gee, this movie will give English people a good laugh. The English boxer was beating the crap out of the Wing Chun master who destroyed ten Japanese Karate blackbelts instantly. And the boxer killed Sammo Hung who was also a Kung-fu master! I know Martial Arts isn't about fighting, but this is ridiculous! Oh, BTW, there're many true stories of small Korean Tae Kwon Do instructors who knocked out local punkass challenging boxers with spinning back kicks to their heads! Check it out!
masterofkenpokarate 10 months ago
So I guess it's a true story that Yip Man fought a Western Boxer. The story is believable because Yip Man kept getting beat up. If this was purely fictional supposedly, Yip Man would've killed the boxer within 5 seconds, of course, without getting hit.
JeetKuneDoKa 10 months ago
In the film, this boxer killed Sammo Hung's character who had the same skill as Yip Man. And Yip Man barely barely managed to knock out the boxer after getting his ass kicked over and over. So what's the point? The master of masters in Kung-fu can barely beat up some unknown boxer?? No wonder Bruce Lee also studied in Western Boxing! LMAO!
JeetKuneDoKa 10 months ago
@JeetKuneDoKa the story goes like this, the only reason bruce lee practice western boxin was bc he didnt like the fundamentals of wing chun. wing chun is also only defence using ur opponets body against him.
Bruce beat ip man eventually if u didnt know that. he was the only one who did. He never needed to add western boxing but he did bc he thought wing chun had its own flaws.
17OmarAlvarez17 10 months ago
O_O bruce lee never beat ip man. wtf are you smoking dude. bruce lee found wing chun flawed when he was in a fight against a northern kung fu style master in america in chinatown. The fight lasted 4-5 minutes and he thought it should've lasted only 10 seconds.
MrHoppers002 10 months ago
@MrHoppers002 : That's how I heard. Bruce Lee said he was chasing him while he kept striking the back of the coward's skull. Soon, Bruce Lee's knuckles got swollen.
No matter how highly Wing Chun is praised, it never impressed me. I do punch with vertical fist occasionally but the mechanic is totally different from Wing Chun's. Mine is more natural and powerful. Instead of Wing Chun's trademark rabbit punches, I hit hard and fast, hitting the target such as nose, chin, or eyeball.
FastStraightPunches 10 months ago
yeah but i was trying to respond to the guy above me that the guy was wong jack man not ip man.
MrHoppers002 10 months ago
@FastStraightPunches Everyone has their own style and preference, no reason to blame the martial art, Wing chun and many others are quite efficient if done correctly. Some may go into karate but can't get used to it, but feel more comfortable with muay thai its more the fighter rather than the style. Bruce lee said so himself, and there's nothing wrong with taking several different martial arts, i wanted to take all muay thai, systema, wushu, etc.

Do Chinese have a video recorded fight between a British boxing champ and a Chinese Kung Fu master in which the latter won?
xpressivist 11 months ago
@xpressivist there might have been some fights, but most of it never happend, Yip man never fought westerners as far as i know. There is a story about a Wing Chun master (student from Yip man) who beat a Russian boxer, but this was never recorded. Most fights that used to happen in especially Hong Kong in the 50s, 60s and early 70s (without rules) were never recorded, although there were many but tehy were illegal. They used to have fights all over China on high platforms, till death sometimes

@xpressivist I'm not sure, but if you ever watched Jet Li's Fearless, it was the same match. That was based on Huo Yuanjia back in the early 1900's. He challenged two foreign fighters, a Russian wrestler and and British boxer, but they forfeited and wouldn't fight him.
kromen10 11 months ago

@xpressivist Stop jumping in the deep end, you're gonna drown. It's a movie, for entertainment.

what really determines the fight is who's conditoined better.
