I wish Benita Valente's version were on youtube. it is the best, without question. But this is certainly an impeccable reading.
Sometimes I think Handel was to vocal music of his time what Irving Berlin was to vocal music of his time. The volume of pieces of very high quality is fairly high.
I understand everyone has their own style of music preference but if you can't hear the beauty in her voice and the melodic rhythm, then you should get an MRI to see how to get rid of that tumor pressing against your auditory pathway.
Please listen to this aria well,it's seemed written yesterday, isn't it??!!You cannot notice that it has been composed more than 200 years!! Wonderful!!!
Gracias.
Occasionally one hears the music that makes them feel and understand something very simple, something very true and intimately familiar, which cannot be contained in words, which transcends meaning. That music is inspired and like all inspired things, it inspires. This is that music.
"Let me weep over my cruel fate, And that I long for freedom! And that I long, and that I long for freedom! Let me weep over my cruel fate, And that I long for freedom! The duel infringes these images of my sufferings I pray for mercy. for my sufferances. I pray for mercy. Let me weep over my cruel fate, And that I long for freedom! And that I long, and that I long for freedom! Let me weep over my cruel fate, And that I long for freedom!
@solwrappednpaperlips Sorry, but this translation is incorrect "The duel infringes these images of my sufferings I pray for mercy. for my sufferances. I pray for mercy." I'd rather say "May sorrow shatter the chains of my torments just out of mercy".
I have not yet heard the opera Rinaldo in full, but what is special about this piece, in my opinion, is that it is something that most of us can relate to, whatever the source of the sadness is. To me, this is at one time a Prayer and an Answer to it, intertwined and indistinguishable from each other - longing for solace while receiving it. A connection of Weeping and Freedom/Peace, ingeniously expressed by Handel.

The ugliest rendition of all promoted "great artists" of this wonderful aria I've ever heard! Poor Handel! What happened to beauty? Bartoli only cares about her ugly technique! Sad...
@serenaluce wow you really have it in for her dont you? That is the sad thing. Nothing is wrong with her technique you just do not like her and nothing she does will ever change that. The ugly things are your comments. As I always say if you have better technique and you can do better then lets hear you.
@NART65 Nice to meet you again:-) Actually she is so overpromoted that it's impossible to have it in for her on her every video on YT! LOL To write several negative comments about her is not such a sad thing! LOL Actually her UGLY singing causes my ugly comments! I can't help it! LOL If you find her singing and technique NOT ugly, it's only your opinion against mine! And it's the beauty of YT!:-) Have you heard other versions of this great aria? I even don't mention CTs! LOL EgSuzie Leblanc's?
Has anyone seen that painting of Lady Jane Grey just before she's executed? This always reminds me of that. The balance of beauty and despair seem similar.
Perfect interpretation by Cecilia Bartoli. Her beautiful voice is made for these composers - in this case George Frederic Handel. Thank you for sharing!
This aria is from Handel's opera Rinaldo. Almirena, the daughter of Goffredo is captured. She is lamenting her circumstance and crying for her freedom. You should hear the sorrow and weeping in the voice. She is eventually reunited with Rinaldo.
I have often criticized Cecilia in her belcanto roles, because in my opinion she has a problem with the legato in her vocalizing, but here she is superb, splendid. I think she should concentrate more on the Baroque repertory, which serves her voice much better.
You have to look at "Fabio Capello crying very rare" (44 sec) This song has been used in little peaces, when Marco van Basten says goodbye to AC Milan. He can't play soccer again, because his injury. It's a short video of Marco van Basten, but very emotional to see.
THe lyrics of this piece are a painful longing for relief from adversity.
From that point of view there's nothing wrong with the song used for the begining of Antichrist. A plus is the beauty of images, that's why it is not easy to forget that part of the movie. is it amazing how the director was able manage everything to keep us talking about?
Yes, indeed G.F.Händel and the story of Rinaldo falling in love with Armida makes the tears rise in your eyes ... And ever seen "Antichrist" and the context as of when that song is played, you cannot get it out of your ears or heart again.
In the movie Farinelli, the only piece sung by one artist alone is Lascia. Not a mix! It was Ewa Godlewska. The rest were a mix between a male countertenor and females! Check out Ewa's website!
NEWSFLASH!!! Everyone absolutely must see the film "Farinelli". The seen in which this aria is performed by Farinelli the castrato (Cecila Bartoli's interpretation is dubbed in) is priceless. I won't say more so as to not spoil the fun. "Farinelli" is a wonderful film for all who love this kind of music.
@kiltedboy1950 Your information is wrong. A polish soprano hows name I cant spell and a countertenor called Lee was blended together to create a voice which was belived to be like a castrato.
@HerrWarja You're absolutely right and thank you. The singers dubbed in were Derek Le Ragin and Ewa Mallas Godlewska. Now I remember more clearly that La Bartoli's voice wasdubbed on to a clip from the movie on You Tube. Nevertheless. "Farinelli" is a must see.
I love this aria and nobody blows this better than La Bartoli!!!! Thank you for the lovely video. On a beautiful Spring day about a week ago and I was near the bandshell in Central Park (NYC). There was a choir of young girls in the bandshell singing this aria. I found myself singing along with. I'm no singer, but I didn't care.
I saw the movie last night (Antichrist) and have since listened to several versions of this song. It is indeed mesmerizing and produces tranquility....
I do like her rendition of Lascia ch'io pianga. I do appreciate that she now sings Baroque in a way that she doesn't sound like she has a full 88 classical orchestra behind her and modulates her voice for the Baroque period instruments behind her.
I've heard other performers, but this performance is of my taste. I don't know Italian but this music is very moving and making me very sad and happy. Happy because of beauty wich is soo hard to produce, and here I am, at the oportunity to feel that this maybe is that little thing. These things are wery rare and fragile in face of everyday primitivism and banality. But when you are alone, even with friends, and so close to it, you know you felt something. So It remains in solitude. And so I cry.
@zozmanpfc the text is : leve that I cry, my severe fate and that I suspire the freedom...the pain must to broke this bad occurrences, of my martyrdoms only for pity.
I don't know if in english has a good mean but in italian is very very beautiful...I'm sorry if I had translate bad...I think that is similar....

@dontlayeggs i couldnt agree more with you, MY BROTHER.BEAUTIFUL! but i fell in love with it when i watched "Farinelli il castrato".have a nice always now
[English translation:] Let me weep over my cruel fate And that I long for freedom! And that I long, and that I long for freedom! Let me weep over my cruel fate And that I long for freedom!
Leave me in sorrow that knows no morrow; Deep is my long-ing for this liberty. Deep is my long-ing, deep is my long-ing for this liberty. Leave me in sorrow that knows no morrow; Deep is my long-ing for liberty. O tears assuaging pain's bitter raging, From my great torment in pity free me. From my great torment, O set me free! (repeat from 1st verse) i enjoy listening to this song, i am singing this song for NYSSMA and i really love the words, i sing it with such feeling, just like her
ENGLISH: "Leave me to weep over my cruel fate and let me sigh for liberty. May sorrow break the bonds of my anguish, if only for pity's sake."
Cruda Sorte = Severe Fate or 'particularly bitter fate' (original lyrics).
some times 'dura sorte' = hard fate (modern version).
I believe that it is used 'Dura' because it is a short word like 'Cruda' with sound and meaning roughly similar... (perhaps to help non-Italian singers in the pronunciation)
Why does she sing 'la cruda sorte'? My sheets say 'la dura sorte'. Are there two versions? My Italian isn't that good, but is it 'cruel' or 'hard' fate, then?
The word "cruda" is more dramatic than "dura". "Cruda" doesn't mean cruel ("crudele" means cruel). It's difficult to translate exactly the meaning of cruda... "cruda" means something of dramatically true, without hope...
I first heard this in the movie Antichrist. It was beautifully set into the prologue and epilogue of the film. The movie itself was gorgeously twisted into something not often seen in a movie nowadays. Von Trier really took a risk with this film. People who hated the movie just don't understand.
I wish Benita Valente's version were on youtube. it is the best, without question. But this is certainly an impeccable reading.

Lyrics:
Leave me in sorrow that knows no morrow; Deep is my long-ing for this liberty. Deep is my long-ing, deep is my long-ing for this liberty. Leave me in sorrow that knows no morrow; Deep is my long-ing for liberty. O tears assuaging pain's bitter raging, From my great torment in pity free me. From my great torment, O set me free! (repeat from 1st verse) i enjoy listening to this song, i am singing this song for NYSSMA and i really love the words, i sing it with such feeling, just like her

"Let me weep over my cruel fate, and that I long for freedom"
kappaisonline 2 years ago 2
i'm italian....it's "cruda sorte"
cruda means cruel,pitiless...and I think that pitiless it's more appropriate as a right translation.
anyway..it means something bad, which hurts the soul.

I saw "la dura sorte" too

it's cruda.
xavierpardosabartes 2 years ago
Cruda Sorte = Severe Fate or 'particularly bitter fate' (original lyrics).
some times 'dura sorte' = hard fate (modern version).
I believe that it is used 'Dura' because it is a short word like 'Cruda' with sound and meaning roughly similar... (perhaps to help non-Italian singers in the pronunciation)
But it is exactly like hanskers says...
caucasoGG 2 years ago
Cruda sorte actually means in english something like cruel fate or callous fate. Severe is a more refined word to express that.
zalmoxys32 2 years ago
It's "mia cruda sorte", but in the lirycs u maybe find "la cruda sorte"...I think it's cruel fate, but i'm not an expert of translation...

I'm italian.....I think is "mia brutta sorte"....Che a volte è anche cantato come "t...triste sorte".....

Why does she sing 'la cruda sorte'? My sheets say 'la dura sorte'. Are there two versions? My Italian isn't that good, but is it 'cruel' or 'hard' fate, then?
Steedrider 2 years ago
both
haribodarko 2 years ago
The word "cruda" is more dramatic than "dura". "Cruda" doesn't mean cruel ("crudele" means cruel). It's difficult to translate exactly the meaning of cruda... "cruda" means something of dramatically true, without hope...
hanskers 2 years ago
'cruda sorte' is often seen translated as 'cruel fate' but the words 'raw' or 'crude' would be better.
Lascia ch'io pianga
mia cruda sorte,
e che sospiri la libertà.
Il duolo infranga queste ritorte
de' miei martiri sol per pietà.
kowloon12 2 years ago
cruda, which is bare, raw, pitiless

wow. her voice is better than Sarah Brightman's
crismonic93 2 years ago 4
No comparison. Brightman is a pop singer. We are talking opera here.
Etnecserc 2 years ago 8
Sarah B does not do opera, her style is called classical crossover, so you cannot compare.

I first heard this in the movie Antichrist. It was beautifully set into the prologue and epilogue of the film. The movie itself was gorgeously twisted into something not often seen in a movie nowadays. Von Trier really took a risk with this film. People who hated the movie just don't understand.
chockinbawlin 2 years ago 4
Vraiment ravissante.

That does this heavenly music have to do with the antichrist?

Not about THE antichrist.
Lascia ch'io pianga plays a key role in Lars von Trier's Antichrist with Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
