For me this version captures the essence of icy, vast Finland better than any other; Francescatti's first movement with Bernsetin and the Heifetz/Hendl are also great in their way, but this is very special. What a great spirit, musician, and violinist Neveu was! She is certainly one of the top five or so violinists of all time and left a few memorable recordings.
No need to compare one violinist to another--appreciate each person's interpretation as an individual and savor it like a different flavor...and it's okay to like somebody's rendition over another..my favorite Sibelius is Mintz but I adore Neveu! I love noting the different nuances in their playing and studying their various approaches and interpretations--sometimes I just like the way a particular artist handles one passage best, or a movement, its never a disloyalty or slam to the artist.
Sorry but Ferras did what Ginette didn't, concerning Sibelius:
He brought out all emotions like pain, anger, frightness and inner disruption.
This recording is perfect itself but Ferras' recording serves the emotional basis of the composition itsel by playing it as if it was a matter of life and death.
This is undoubtedly my favorite Sibelius concerto recording ever. Heifetz, I think, doesn't quite come close, chiefly because there are (like in his Brahms concerto) several notes and passages that he just does without second thought. That's great for the third movement, but the first two are just different. That's what I like better about Neveu: she consciously brings out certain aspects of this concerto that nobody else does. Heifetz never did that to my knowledge.
Concertolover: Anyone who has heard Heifetz play has been influenced by him; some positive, some negative. I take it that you are not a fan of the great Heifetz, no?
depends what he plays, some things i think he plays well, others sort of just plowed through. i will not deny the technique is amazing (though always fast-running 3rds), but there are just some things i would prefer he take it down a notch and not be so vicious. and i still disagree with your comment, someone can be great and have no effect upon another, i'm sure she respect him, but that doesn't mean it had to have influenced her; she could've remained unchanged + continued to play as before.
Neveu plays with such incredible intensity and depth of feeling that it is almost overwhelming. What makes Heifetz' recording better is that he creates the same intensity of feeling but in a more elegant and less personal manner. Neveu plays too heavy and with too much intensity sometimes because it overwhelms the music. What an amazing experience to listen to her though...
Heifetz' recording was the first, and influenced this version of the great Neveu, as it has all others since. However, her intensity and power in this, are second to few; her stage presense was said to be spellbinding. And her tone, what a tone!
how can you say his recording influenced her ? you can't - usually greats are great because they have some original to say - not to say that maybe he did influence her but you can't just say it did because heifetz did it. believe or not, some people don't like heifetz ::gasp::
well.. To be honest i do too.. After all Heifetz did meet Sibelius and talk about this concerto, so his interpretation is probably rather precise. But there is something about Neveu that no other great violinist has. She's very dramatic in her playing, I noticed she often takes pieces a bit slower - notice she starts first cadenza much slower than Heifetz for instance and it has a great dramatic effect when she speeds up.
Long story short: this interpretation is still incredible ;)
But heifetz, despite sticking much to the score, had great sound and feeling. In particular concert sibelius and the thaikovsky have a masterful interpretation, the notes long ago heifetz this concert more intense, which agreaga much feeling cuendo these contrast with the harmonics, in addition to not delay while the notes, makes more fluid the piece and more intense for the listener.
Thank you for posting this picture bio of this amazing young women. I am trying to find a cd of her collected works, but I am having trouble finding. Perhaps if someone sees this you could tell me how I might procure such a precious thing.

spooky, good recording, she would sure be one of the greatest violinists if she had not died so young.

I have heard recordings by Heifetz, Szeryng and Oistrakh. I think this one is the best. The opening...wow!

I agree with your general sentiment. I think Heifetz's recording was as near perfect a rendition of Sibelius that ever was.

Maervelous version....!!!!
Thanks for this.
She was a colosal and wonderfull violinist..., she was a child prodigy and
Won the firts prize of Wieniawski Violin Competition, and Oistrakh who I loved
as one of the best won the second prize...
Her performance is extremely dramatic and intense...
Please no make compares, is absolutely
absurd, foolish and silly...sorry...
