Probably would have to have the camera level with the pivot point otherwise you don't have enough leverage against the movement of the camera. If your method works well though, that's cool. Most commercial cranes have the cable/bar on top, probably as much as anything to reduce costs of engineering.

Not easier to put the wire on the top and let the camera weight pull the cable tight?
