Elite athletes can only perform at an elite level for a few years, which is why most Olympic medalists give up skating and head for college. I would agree that some of her more recent choreographers have not displayed the extraordinary talent of Marina Zoueva -- but that's their fault. I would never say that her skating was ordinary.
Not only a great loss to the sport--but just the thought that he never got to grow old with Katia or see Daria grow up is pretty gut wrenching. Ironic too that here's a young guy in top physical condition who was presumably doing all the right things for a healthy heart, yet it couldn't overcome genetics.
I don't think Sergei was necessarily better that her, but they were much better together, than I think either one of them would be alone, as Katia's single career has kind of proved although her skating is still beautiful it is not extraordinary.

This is lovely. I loved watching them skate. It's now obvious that Sergei had all the talent since she is very ordinary since he died.
