Yes, it would be better if I was not using a Image Manipulation Program, if it was a video editor, but the problem here is....

I only know how to work with Sony Vegas 6, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, Magix Movie Edit, Edius 3. And in none of them I've never tried to make such effect

Color balance and contrast is good on 9.27 changing and givin a washed out version is a mistake.

Also Making a still isn't that much interesting...for flame effects timeline counts...fire is not static...it can somehow cyclic to reduce complexity...but not static...so bring out this workflow in a animated sequence and that's going to be interesting.

In Layman's terms,

firstly you cut out your guy from the photo, then turn him black and white then you do motion blur (vertical)then you copy that into three new layers, one deep red, the other bright yellow, and the last one is the fire - orange. you liquidize the motion blur patterns (using the swirly tool) manually on each of the 4 layers. then you blend the layers together and change the color mixing using the graph thingy u see in the end. and you paste him back in. that's bassically it

I was using the dodge/burn tool to make some parts bright and others dark, in gimp 2.4 press Shift+D, the brush must be the one blurred and you must do it very soft. holding CTRL you have a dark brush.

im pretty sure after he copies the white and black layer and makes it invisible, he adds a layer mask (layer's alpha channel) to the colour layer, and then just press crtl-v. i just watched that part of the video about 20 times and messed around with the layer masks til i got it ^_~

As far as making quick effects & such goes...

I should look more into training with it "officially" ,lol, but I am in college right now for 3d animation (mainly 3ds max 9 right now/ and photoshopping around,lol)

I have Photoshop cs2 as well and I don't use it a lot, actually I think Gimp is easier than Photoshop but this is my personal thinking, try to use gimp, I am sure you will like it and there are many things similar to Photoshop, about 3D I like to use Blender 3D though I am not professional only appreciate to learn new stuff, animations... Yes and no... yes because it is a mask and no because it is a quick mask, a mask transform a layer in a Mask and a quick mask doesn't require a new layer it is just to be used for selecting something in the image then you disable it after selecting what you want... other way to achieve the same result (select an object) is using the Scissor (pressing I)

left lower corner on the image window there is a square called quick mask when you click on it the mask is enabled or disabled, if you enable it and paint the image with white brush the mask will be "erased" where you paint, if you use the black color it will recover that place with mask... once you disabled the mask where it was "erased" will be selected.
