Volkswagen dropped the ball here in one of the biggest marketing blunders of all time. Had they simply marketed the car as a new luxury division brand called the "Phaeton" it would have found loyal customers. When Toyota went into the luxury car market they didn't call their first model the Toyota LS 400. They gave the brand its own name---Lexus. VW should have done that with the Phaeton, instead of calling it the Volkswagen Phaeton with a big "VW" on the grill. Great car, bad marketing.
of course toyota did not had a luxury brand on the market like VW at the time, on the other hand , it was risky for VW to canibalize sales from their luxury divission: Audi.love the Phaeton tough...
@FallasDeOrigen1 Yes, and therein lies my point. Perhaps Germans know that VW owns Audi but here in America 9 out of 10 people don't know that. To them,. Audi is a completely separate entity, as would be the Phaeton had it not been branded with a big VW on the grill. I've only seen half a dozen Phaetons on the road here in the states and have never ridden in one but I've read that it is a fabulous car that actually surpasses anything made by Audi, BMW or Mercedes in terms of quality.
Whoever doesn't like this car has absolutely no ideas of what cars should be and completely dismisses the heritage of VW - the pursuit of perfect engineering. VW means people's car, but Phaeton by no means indicate the same idea. It simply represents high-end luxury, making itself the immediate competitor of BMW 7 series and Mercedes S Class - only with less price. People who care about their cars should seriously consider this underrated brand.
Possibly one of the worst VW commercials I've ever seen. Skip the Phaeton for now. Leave it for the Audio a8 and stick to developing the Passat in three different models; regular, super sport (like the GLI and GTI) and super lux. sport.
I really do think that it is a great car, but i think that VW should have made a all new brand, with a series of high end luxury cars to compete with Audi, Merc and BMW. The problem with this car is that it still has this VW badge, and when i think VW i don't think of nice luxury cars, i think of small cheap car for the masses and it ruins the prestige of the car.
@nelsonafonso1 No but the badge don't have any value for a high end luxury saloon. Not that they should charge you more for a new badge but like Toyota have Lexus and all that. Lexus has their own reputation even though it basically just is a high end Toyota because they know that Toyota isn't exclusive enough.
This is a very gorgeous car but why build something based on the frame of "Audi A8". VW owns audi so why build a similar car with nearly the same price range??
@jmjboi because the audi is nowhere near as luxurious as this. The phaeton even has a dehumidifier so the windows never steam up. Also with the new acc radar guided cruise control and the lane assist the car can practically drive itself.
What Benz should of done is Made this exactly the same ad but just when everybody would of been thinking oh shit its just that soppy Volkswagen ad again they pull up NeXT to' a w221 with a guy smiling as he leans back and a hot blonde chick comes up from blowing him.
It may be the most fabulous VW ever made, but the company that built its reputation on being everycar for everyman fell flat with this Phaeton, seeking to be the ultracar for the ultrarich. Heads everywhere explode at the very idea.
You still don't get it, lemme rewind here, first you cry foul that I mentioned how some Phaetons as equipped were selling for $90K so I pointed out that the people tend to prefer the fully loaded models whenever possible, and that is where I mentioned the video game systems of highest spec outselling the lower spec editions. VW clearly made this car for the lulz since it probably would have sold way better as an Audi. The only problems with this car are the VW emblems on the grille and trunklid.
Never heard of an analogy, huh? You must be some kind of mob criminal or drug trafficker to afford your beloved Phaeton, as you are too ignorant to understand my use of that analogy of my contention that people prefer the full-spec top shelf edition of a given product over the lesser equipped lower end models. Your slavish defense of an absurdly overpriced (and overclassed for its marque) car tires me. I will leave you in peace and you can go back to feverishly jerking off all over your Phaeton.
Get real! People don't want the crap base model of anything, they get the topped out edition of a given item whenever possible. Its just like buying a retard pack PS3 or Xbox 360 vs. the complete PS3/Xbox 360 with the full memory, HD, and all the trimmings.
This is a documentary film about Prostata cancer und Prostatakrebs, with a shitload of money , altough senseless Life....How Sad! God!-why are u so unfair??? Rich people should live for ever
No I have not driven it, I have been inside one while it was on exhibit at a auto show. It was nice, that I do not debate. What I think is this car's biggest misstep is the VW emblem on the grille and the trunklid. VW should stick to what it is good at and know its place. This car's branding is just as bad as Ford taking their F-150, drowning it in chrome, leather seats and a carpeted truck bed and calling it the Lincoln Mark LT. Bottom line:good car, wrong brand.
They should have stopped slacking off back at the plant and stuck Audi rings on the front like they were supposed to, that was the feeling I was left with when I looked at a Phaeton at a car expo a few years back while they were still sold in America.
i have v10 5.0 diesel, and i can tell you the car is perfect...you can feel the power, also it does not sound like a diesel...the car is excellent, regular maintaining and that is all...people say 'that is volkswagen'....doesnt matter believe me...phaeton is high luxury car...
Needs Audi rings IMO, VW is not the luxe brand they are the 'people's car'. No shame in making basic mass market cars for the common man. The Phaeton is just as strange as a pickup truck built by Rolls-Royce. You would expect a Rolls pickup to be a very nice truck, but at the same time RR is not noted for making trucks either. If VW wanted to do something bold and crazy they should drop a W12 motor into a Rabbit and call it the R12 GLI or something...
@X28051986X that´s right, its stupid for people to have preconception with cars volkswagen because vlolkswagen is not people's car for a long long time...
even when they created the Beetle, it was still better than the 2 cv citroen fiat 500, and yet it was people's car ...
now volkswagem makes remarkable cars! you have a remarkable car!
I have a 2004 V8 and have been spoiled rotten by this car. I'd buy another if I could. MY wife says that there is nothing left after this car - it has everything and its safe and good looking to boot.
love this car. damn now this is what the passat cc should've been; this thing has great worksmanship, after all Bentley's GT and Flying Spur are based on this architecture if the Passat CC were more like this, it might actually be able to compete with the CLS on a point other than price
people dont get it is the sister car to the a8 but its better its cheaper hand made.. the olny problem it has the voklsewagen label... and now it is not being made any more
i guess that's why it's a brilliant car for those who are willing to overlook the label...
i'm thinking about one but what puts me off is the weight and the fact that there's nothing between the 3.0 v6 and 5.0 v10. One has no power, the other uses up rather a lot of diesel.
Yes you have right, this video is a nice example of a super built marketing brainwash, that makes peoples soul sucked out and poor. You are happy if u own a car like this. But only 5 % of population can afford this. The rest of people remains unhappy...this is the message of this shit!
For that kind of money I would rather get an S-Class sedan, VW should stick to making 'people's cars' like hatchbacks and sedans with cloth seats, hubcaps, crank windows and AM/FM radios. Save this kind of stuff for the Audi brand I say, no sense making an inter-company marketing fight...
Probably been brought up before, but Phaeton shares the same platform as a Bentley, and a lot of other parts.

@gophop I'd say it shares the same chasis as the A8, but you're probably right about Bentley components.

The consumers of Volkswagen and Audi are distinct from each other, so there is no competition between these two brands...
