As I ead comments I am getting some information I did not watch GL til mid 1980's so I was not sure about ricks mother Do you know when he was on show before he went to school?
Rick's real name is Frederick, so he was known as Freddie. Yes, he did go off to boarding school for a while, and when he came back he had been SORASed. Everyone exclaimed over how grown up he had become (yeah, by YEARS!) and he said he wanted to be called Rick instead of Freddie.
@jward199 This was during the Dobson era and Freddie/Rick was away at a Prep school called Lincoln Prep somewhere East with Philip. I seem to recall that the great gold-digger Rita coerced Ed's decision to send the boy there (since the Spaulding's thought the school first class) as well as coerced Ed into purchasing a swanky house right next door to the Spauldings.
Martin Hulswit...I wasn't familiar with him, either, until I started to discover vintage GL clips here several months/years ago. Peter Simon is the Ed I grew up seeing the most. Hulswit played Ed during 1969-1981...so he had a long run in the role...playing him during the character's most intense story-lines. Look for the clips called "The Chase" and see both Martin Hulswit and Don Stewart {Mike Bauer} chase after Roger in Santo Domingo...it's heart pounding even still.
Maureen Garrett looks so young, and seems just slightly green. She had only taken over as Holly a year before, inheriting over 5 years of very complicated, anguished backstory. She said the first Holly used to show up and watch her tape scenes, unnerving her. It's hard to imagine anyone but MG ever in this role.
I know what you mean CarlD2. Look at Grant Aleksander (Phillip) he worked with all Three Alans as well as Alexandras. I think he also worked with all Four Alan Michaels too.
Yeah, but Mart must be bald by now. I don't think he'd want to come back. So much drama behind the scenes and remember he never "worked" with the current cast. Also remember they tried to bring back Ed # 2 in the late 1990's during Danny/Michelle Storyline and it tanked.
it didnt tank they just failed to give him a decent story. he was all wrapped up in the Mary Anne Caruthers debacle. If they had wrote for the character everything wouldve been great. Of course im scared to think what the current writers (and I use that term loosely) would do with the likes of Peter Simon's Ed.
Mart Hulswit was the best Ed Bauer ever! His dramatic range was amazing: strong and angry, like in this clip, and depressed and alcoholic at other times. If he's still acting, they should get him to reprise Ed now. (Peter Simon seems to be done with the show.)
Love the clip...Roger/Holly/Ed...i liked the line from Ed about if he were to still keep up the charade of pretending to be Christina's father that she, meaning Holly, would "have to handle this"...putting it squarely on Holly's shoulders. Good dialogue by all principal performers.

Ed - nice combover (Richard Van Vleet was the first Ed I saw, but I grew to like Peter Simon).
Holly - what a classic beauty.

I assume Rick, who was known as "Freddy", was away at that boarding school where everyone in Springfield sends their kids.

Would like to have either Mart Hulswitt or Peter Simon to return to help Rick & Mel.

It would be great to see mart come back. Even back in 1977, Holly syill looks the same. Everyone else ages but her.

Mart Hulswit was also great as JB King Esquire in "Shining Time Station"!
