I used to play this when I was about 7, I think! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Agreed completely about game consoles not capable of providing this experience. I'm a PC gamer at heart, always will be. I do think some newer games in the FPS genre are very good, but those don't exist on consoles, only PC. Check out ArmA 2, for instance. Extremely in-depth game based off of a real military simulator, VBS2.
Hi, do you know how to slow the simulation rate? Because days go by much faster for em than in your simulation and it makes it impossible to control the reactor core temperature. Thanks.
i can't operate the PPRV OPEN and the PRCP ON commands: it just opens or starts the pump for a while, then the program immediately stops/closes it. why does it do that?
demu(DOT)org/pages/view.php?ref=1172&search=&order_by=rating&offset=0&archive=0&k= this worked for me! You will need DosBox 0.74 to run it! This little game is GodAwesome!
@MrGermanBratwurst yeah, that version is cool, but it is missing about 20 commands. actually, it lacks the ability to enter commands and you only have the most basic controls. Also, it is not well programmed, and some buttons, when pressed, will not be able to change states after having been pressed.
A) Percent Out needs to match the Percent Demand (immediately to the right of it). Inputting the command "DEMAND ON" will make it change every so often.
B) main methods of controlling percent out include VALVE [1/2] [OPEN/CLOSE] (open one to halve output) and adjusting the Secondary Coolant Pump. SCP should be higher than PCP, given max coolant levels. Something like 9-Rod/79-PCP/89-SCP works fine for a start and doesn't put too much damage on initially.
@ashlandrailroad The "proper" commands to do it appear to be borked in both 3.0sw and 3.1sw (at least in DOSBOX). The command AUTO SHUTDOWN will work if you can get the core temperature to 65 degrees. the proper commands are "repairs" for repairing damage and "refuel" for refueling, when at 65 degrees. They don't work in DOSBOX, creating an infinite loop. AUTO SHUTDOWN does work, however, and will repair and refuel.
As I type this, I am repairing 84% damage, which will put me at over 8000 days.
how fast is your cycle rate becaus mine is at 3000 cycles and i dont have any time to resonde before a melt down do you know how to slow down your cycles rate
@ashlandrailroad About 400 cycles is probably a reasonable speed to start with. You can control your cycles in DOSBox with the CTRL-F11 and CTRL-F12 keystrokes.
I've never seen such a thing... but really, that is pretty cool!
I imagine that (at one point) software that was in many ways similar to this... was actually responsible for helping to run such a place (a power plant of any/many kinds).
Still, I'm curious... WAS this released as a "game", or was it more of a training tool?
@greytale I'm pretty sure that this particular program was intended for entertainment rather than as a serious training tool. It's not *quite* detailed enough to actually train someone to operate a nuclear power plant.
of all the videos on youtube, i didnt expect to find myself so intrigued as with this :). I remember the good old days of pre-windows gaming and will now head off to get this one :)
To all the people making fun of Asperger's and Autism, you can thank them for having a computer, having power for your computer, and for having a house to live in. All of those things require engineering, often jobs which people with Aspgerer's have. Many believe that Tesla(the man who discovered the AC current[which you are using right now probably had it]), as does Bill gates
If you use DOSBox, sure. Since this game is text-mode, it might even run natively in Vista, but I would run it in DOSBox anyway; that way you could full-screen the game instead of playing in a window (since Vista doesn't support full-screen mode for console programs).
reminds me of the boiler water reactor simulator... while that is actually a windows game, it has very good physics, and actually requires you to follow full control on removing selective control rods and sequences. but what can I say, I enjoy radiation in general, so I find it fun.
i favorited this in case i ever have trouble getting to sleep, just watching this guy go through the game was making me drowsy, couldn't imagine playing it
of course for the first person shooter game people.
you could maybe have a setting on the game where you have to protect the plant from maybe Muslim terrorists!! you would be able to walk all throughout the plant keeping it safe when a threat arrives.or just walk around to see it!!(oh now i am so sad the playstation or xbox doesn't make a game like this.) tell me would that not be super cool??? I mean you could be the controller and do the same educational brain teaser to keep the plant running
this does look like the older games you used to find for the commodore (or the old apple computers like the apple 2C or) actually it is quite shameful xbox or playstation or the likes doesn't make games like this..
you would be able to actually see the plant you are controlling.. actually see it melt down.. (big flash pause loud rumble huge ball of fire that errupts into a mushroom cloud with a heat wave blast that rips out in a giant circle
OakFLAT, that's funny. I used to live in Knoxville and I saw the Oak Ridge museum and visitor's center in the mid '80s before they started shutting them down.
Correct, it is produced by GamTtech, however it seems to be unavailable. There is also a version for the Commodore 64 which is downloadable as a C-64 Emulator disk image.
"It's a Microsoft Windows program" means "I would rather avoid running that program." In this case, there's some redemption in the fact that it appears to be a 16-bit Windows application, but still.
Where do you find these silly old VGA games anyways? Or more likely, how can you remember all of these stuff? There are like, tons of old good games which names I don't even remember.
Actually, I'm not sure that this game counts as VGA, since it's text-mode... Probably more like EGA. I got it off the Gamefest CD, a nice little shovelware compilation of shareware games.
played when I was 9 and and I used to get to the end of year/month page and have to peform repairs and it would crash.

Heh you're forgetting when you change the rods there's a big lag for things to take effect so if if you get things heating fast you gotta plop them.
