  • they have such bad pronunciation of U

  • The original version performed by Hiroshi Wada & Mahina Stars back in 1963 is extremely obscure and hard-to-find in Japan and never available on CD. The single(Victor VS-903) was flopped and most of Japanese people don't know the original version・・・But recently I have got the 10'' LP "Miwaku No Chorus Vol.17(Victor LV-331)" which includes the original version of this song.

By the way, Hiroshi Wada & Mahina Stars were a very successful Hawaiian-styled Kayokyoku band.

  • This song is NOT categorized to “ENKA”. It’s “Kayoo-kyoku”. Kayoo-kyoku is more popular. ENKA is close to Japanese traditional folk song.

  • @GuruGuruHHH Sorry I misunderstood, I thought this song should be an Enka because it sounds like traditional Japanese scale... Anyway, the song itself concerns more popular thing, rather than tradition, as you say.

  • 菊千代さん・・・、ですかぁ。聴衆は意味は判ってないよね。でも、いいものは良いと認めているんだろうか。

  • しかしまぁ、よくこんな歌引っ張り出してきたこと(笑)

    その着眼点は実に面白い;

    再発見です。

  • Wada Hirosi stuff was categorized as "Mood Kayou", not Enka.

It Is difficult to explain about how different they are though.

  • 非常に良いですよ。

    日本の和の部分をそのままドンと西洋に持ち込んだのですね。

    良くわかります。

    菊千代さんは、KIKUCHIYOにならずに、そのまま菊千代さんのままでいらしたのですね。

  • Wow. Amazing.

  • LOVE IT!

  • @Yoshaorlow Enka (spelled "演歌" in Kanji) is popular music particularly based on Japanese traditional culture, sense, emotion, and so on.It is sung in a unique way called "Kobushi"...Hmm, It's difficult to explain well. You can find many examples if you search with the keyword "演歌".

  • @SuperNF2010 I seek music by keyword. I think this kind of music have any culture. I hate russian Enka - Шансон, (from french word Chanson) - city romantic ballade. For exemple search in Youtube "Rada Rai"

  • @SuperNF2010 So I guess you might as well tell us the name of that amazing string instrument that opens the piece? :-)

  • @KadhabraSpells yeah that is Koto(琴) . More precisely, it is called Sou(箏). I glad you like it!

  • @SuperNF2010 Thanks for the information, Super!

  • I am a Japanese but actually hated Enka music like this one... However, Pink Martini's performance is very very cool. My impression about Enka has changed.

  • @SuperNF2010 What is Enka music?

  • This concert was great! We saw the 2nd performance that New Year's Eve at the Alene Schnitzer Concert Hall. It was all recorded and became their "Dicover the World" DVD....but this song, WOW! To hear that koto, live, just sent pleasant shivers throughout your body!

  • Only deaf people can deny, that Pink Martini is great band an their music is fantastic !!!

  • these guys are so talented it hurts to listen

  • you cannot export a koto, every instrument produced is part of Japan's heritage. at least this is what i have heard...

  • @lordvespatron Whoever told you that was mistaken. I have two koto and my roomate just purchased one at a store in Portland. We live in Oregon, US.

  • Is this one of the two performances from New Year's Eve 2007/2008 at the Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland? I surprised my girlfriend and took her to the latter show.....This was exceptionally spine-tingling live!

  • they sound sooo Japanese, love this song!!

  • なんかすっごい変な気分だけど、嫌いでないぞ。

  • she always pronounces the "u" in a French way... anyway still a very good perfprmance

  • This is a fantastic rendition of a Japanese love song, considering It is uncommon to hear this music outside of Japan. We have been inspired to record a condensed version of this delightful tune with just Accordion, Guitar Flute and percussion. Thanks to Pink Martini our audiences love the tune, it is also popular on or Japanese clips on youtube. Peter Rappolt... Viva the band Sydney Australia

  • This is amazing. I love Pink Martini too, and I admire how they sing in other languages and perform every kind of rhythms so spectacular. Maybe someone here can send me the translation of this song and U Plavu Zoru. Thanks

  • This song can invoke Mothra.

  • It reminds me when i was waiting for the end of the hughe summer rain in Budapest. The rain was a curtain and all the lights turned to honey and grey. The city was unbealiveable :) So this is my budapest rain anthemn ;) IT is my favourite! thanks

  • So romantic :)

  • If you ever get a chance see this band. You'll thank me.

  • Thank you! Bravo!

  • i love pink martini, and im half asian but damn they sure sing like how real japenese traditional singer....the memories...sweet

  • I concur. When I first heard them singing I thought they were Asian too! That is, till I looked up from what I was doing was surprised to see they were Non-Asian. They did a Beautiful job on this song! From what I "could" translate, sounds like two lovers who want to be together forever however, they are somehow "separated"...such a Sad yet Beautiful song.

  • Superb, perfect. Lovely...

  • That is an epic instrument up front... where can I get one? :)

  • This is koto. See more in Wikipedia or search clip on YouTube with this keyword.

  • @Yoshaorlow koto is a huge string instrument but the sound is soooo beautifull to hear

  • This is a koto which is traditional Japanese string instrument dating way back. You can get one from Japan however, I suggest you buy it and bring it home with you. If you are near a Japanese music store and/or dance studio they may be able to help you get one as well. Korea has a similar instrument as well. Not sure about China or Taiwan though. Good Luck! I Hope you find one to your liking.

  • Brilliant. Absolutely beautiful. I wish I had known them sooner - Pink Martini and China Forbes make one lethal concoction!

  • Her name was Kikuchiyo Across the nape of her porcelain-like neck The night-club's blue light swayed I held her as we danced I felt her gentle shoulders tremble Why this sadness... why this sadness? I wish it could have gone on forever Together passing time in Akasaka In a hotel on that misty night We spent the night in passion And then... the blush in her tender cheeks Turned to tears... lonely tears
  • Her name was Kikuchiyo

    Telling me to forget everything

    Our only night together

    She vanished

Leaving only her sweet scent lingering softly

In the fog... in the fog

    Her name was Kikuchiyo

  • Thanks!

  • There's more to the song

    Her name was Kikuchiyo

    Telling me to forget everything

    Our only night together

    She vanished

Leaving only her sweet scent lingering softly

In the fog in the fog

    Her name was Kikuchiyo

    There's the end. :)

  • And does anyone know the translation?

  • This is a beautiful remake! China Forbes (of Pink Martini) is white, I wonder how she learned to speak Japanese so well?

  • Thanks. I think China can song, but can't speak :)

    >This is a beautiful remake!

Where is original version of this song?

  • I believe it's an original, actually. I may be wrong.

  • This is reworking song of Wada Hiroshi wroted 40 years ago.

  • respek!
