Although, the original version was racist in nature. You have to understand it was made in the 1940's. It was a different era back then and unfortunately accepted. This scene should be preserved as a historical value as to how ignorance to race was back then. It should be put as educational and historical value. We have come a long way especially in the middle of the 20th century.
I don't think this can be explained away simply because Fantasia's old. Sunflower looks like she belongs to the era of slavery (kind of like Prissy in Gone With the Wind). Slavery was abolished in the 19th century... Fantasia may be old but it was released in 1940, way after that. Perhaps there were still many African-American girls who had to be servants for richer white girls at the time, but still, portraying them excusively like that seems quite racist even for 1940.
it's not racist, it's true to the times unfortunately they didn't treat her badly or depict the poor black centaur in a negative way, this is coming from a black 19 year old girl. its sad to see that this was once okay, but i'm not offended by it.
@tcloudx3 I agree w you completely, and I'm glad you said it...I understand if this came out now it would be completely racist but you have to consider the times it came out. She's adorable, and she's not stuck up like the others are...se isn't treated badly..but like I said if they did this now it would be different. Sometimes though I think white people (I'm white) are so afraid to be racist that they end up being MORE racist unintentionally, if that makes any sense.
Is this racist because of how they treat the poor black centaur, or how she's portrayed? (She dose'nt look like a stereotype, she looks more like Princess Tiana with a 40's look.)
you guys, yeah this is unbelievably racist now, but when it was first released, that's just the way shit was. get over it. they took it out so people wouldn't throw a fit and what are you doing? throwing a fit. Disney acknowledged their mistake and attempted to fix it; and yet people still want to bash them for it? that kind of behavior is what makes me sick. just let it drop. its in the past. dragging the shit white people use to do back into the open is only prolonging racism in general.
@xXFlargaDaWolfXx soo.....what about the cartoons Disney makes today?
If 20 years in the future, society has changed to such an extent that scenes from today's Disney movies have to be cut and censored for the future audience, because future values will be different from today's, will you be okay with that?
@OBSysteme I've seen pleanty of little black girls that have looked like that, specially back then. Just look at the little rascals, you cant say that farina didnt look exactly like that. They didnt even make her up to look like it, it was the way he/she was naturally born. But yeah the role of farina was played by both a girl and a boy at different times, buckwheat actually played her for a little while till they made his character.
@OBSysteme No I am not mislead, you guys take Tyra Banks, Leona Lewis, Hally Berry, Beyonce and all these famous african looking women and call them simply black when they are less than 50% of african ancestry.
You guys even call Barak Obama a "black" president when he has a white mother and his black father left when he was still a baby and he grew up in a white environment!
P.S. bright colours are beautiful, blond/red/brown hair, all ranges of eye colours, stark/pink/suntan skin!
@TsakirisAlexandros You are an idiot. Sunflower was supposed to "represent" Black females during the 40's. By then, many Black people weren't full African anymore due to interracial sexual relations. (Master raping his slaves) Sunflower isn't supposed to be African. She's an African-American - TOTALLY different. Africans and African-Americans look a lot different. However, I think Sunflower is cute, and it saddens me that she was depicted this way :(
@BreahBreah So you dislike the african looks as far as I understand from your post. You want her ot be depickted as mixed so as to look more european.
I think they should put her a weave and a straight permanent so as to look like all the "proud" african american women who dislike everything about their half heritage.
I think this cartoon depicts the inner thoughts of your side about what beauty is and how you see yourselves!
@OBSysteme No if you see a photo from REAL 100% africans you will realize why they created her like this. You are mislead to think that mixed people are "africans" and the fact that they have straight hair (prolly a weave) lighter complexion and more delicate facial features is about being mixed.
This is the never ending story of people from the other side always trying to prove things that don't exist.
From these censored scenes it looks to me like a little girl idolizing these adult women/centaurs... whatever. And really Sun Flower is so frickin cute!! I never realized that she was in the Fantasia movie till I saw this online. In my opinion, she stands out above the rest of these centaur ladies. I understand why it is seen as offensive, but what a special character to see and now she is gone from ever being watched :(
this is not different than if time warner were to cut out the scenes form gone with the wind where prissy is being slapped as well as the scenes with hattie mcdaniel and Oscar polk thank goodness Time warener isn'y that hypocritcal, like disney was, middle of the road liberals believe in less censorship, but less than and sneaky believes in more ,Just as neo , moderate and absolute conservatives believe in toal censorship All are no different
Back when people were allowed to portrait what they saw instead of "black is beautiful" politically correct phrases.
Being cute or good person has nothing to do with the beauty. you are all racists against the beautiful centaurs just because the half donkey half black girl is ugly!
@mewtata excuse me you are just fucking ignoring how racist this is and insulting to black people and think that it's alright because you compliment sunflower by calling her likable.
@mewtata and that's how you should only see it, it does not matter whether it makes her look likable and the rest like stuck up chicks IT'S RACIST AND SICK
@mewtata Omg, exactly. I watched the censored version when I was little, and I thought the centaurs were just show-offs to each other while they got ready, now I can see they're totally stuck-up...especially the 3rd centaur in this segment.
Wouldn't it be more racist if there were never any African Americans or other non whites in cartoons?
I think Sunflower and her friends (or sisters) here are cute. But I do understand very well why many are offended by this stuff.

@JohnSilverfan01 "Wouldn't it be more racist if there were never any African Americans or other non whites in cartoons?"
It's funny you should mention that, because that's what happened with this section. Instead of creating another character, they just cut her out.
Not having any non-white characters is just as bad as having stereotypes (negative or not) of non-white characters, however.
