This is a fake, a moderately elaborate fake, but still a fake. The TI89 has 256 KB of RAM, which, no matter how you do the math, is nowhere near enough to run a port of red hat, a GUI, let alone real port of GIMP.
try to get it onto a friends calc which can connect to a computer and then send it from calc to calc afterwards. if that does not work, try the "tilp" project (also known as TI Linux Project)
this is a free driver which should your computer be able to connect to your calc again ;)
he didn't told me 'bout others.. only that it is able to run the REAL linux kernel on a ti... but i know others :) just google there are thousend others
sorry to dissapoint you, but this isn't actually Linux. It's just a shell program (although a very cool one) that mimics it, Actual Linux kernel has, in fact, been ported for the Motorolla 68k processor (which is used on TI-89), but it takes up all memory with no room left for binaries (not even basic ones such as ls and rm).
I bet he could have solder additional memory and RAM by soldering it to the boards!
