He quotes from the constitution "Life , Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" and then says that these come from God ( really they come from Government) and implies that people in other countries have no such rights (which is not true). All I know is than in my country (not USA) nobody can deny me access to the health care I need and I certainly cannot go bankrupt getting it. In the USA this happens all too often. So much for Life, Liberty and TPoH!!

The theme with most posts below is an assertion that health insurance is a right and providing it to all people will solve the problem of high health care costs. Health insurance is not a right. And if allowed to work without government interference, the insurance market, without barriers of competition imposed by fed & state gov't's, would naturally lower its costs to compete. The Fed gov't cannot force health insurance on us. If states want to offer it, that's a different story.

In most countries access to health care is a right because that is what the people, through their legislatures, have said is what they want. Then comes the issue of how to pay for it. Its even a right in the U.S. if you are at the point of death or serious injury and are in a hospital ER or have diabetes. That is written in FEDERAL law and nobody has ever complained about that fact.

There is little or no competition in health care insurance. A few insurers dominate the market and they are neither suppliers of service (that's what the medical profession does) nor are they consumers (that's where the people come in). The insurers are a UNNECESSARY and COSTLY MIDDLEMAN in the whole health care system and should be DONE AWAY WITH COMPLETELY!

America isn't like 'most countries' for a reason. Our rights are Life (not gov't funded abortion), Liberty (not tyranny via forced taxation, health insurance, and entitlement programs) and the Pursuit of Happiness (not guaranteed happiness, but the freedom to pursue it). Our rights are given to us by our Creator, not the government. This is constitutional. Anything else is unconstitutional and leads to tyranny.

Additionally, insurance used to be a luxury acquired by those who could afford it. Because we have become a litigious society, the legal community has changed the way we view this and now it is becoming a right? Makes no sense. We need tort reform and an open market to sell across state lines as set for in H.R. 3200. Sadly, this patient-focused bipartisan bill was ignored by the majority in the House.

thing is, Price is right, Obama and his people have said before that republicans havent offered any solutions(sadly that is true), but whether these were the type of "solutions" Tim is offering here i dont know. because claiming you can cover americans without raising taxes is wrong. you have to pay for it somehow. where would you take the money from Mr. Price? maybe get out troops out of Iraq and stop putting money into the faith based initiative would help a bit. common sense would also help

Lumadil, you're wrong in stating that "you" (meaning govt) would have to pay for healthcare somehow....the simple act of allowing insurance companies to sell across state lines, thereby creating more competition, would drive prices down.

Aside from that, lowering taxes on corporations would free up room for them to hire more people and provide healthcare for more people. Obama demonizes industries but the fact is companies try to attract good workers by offering good benefits

Maybe Tom Price needs to realize that the very idea of insurance is that we should all pay about the same and be happy if we don't get sick. If we get sick and need the insurance, we are grateful for the insurance to relieve the cost burden.

Pushing sick people into high risk pools means that they are punished for needing to access insurance.

Everyone else pays insurance who does not need it thinks that f one day they need it, it will be there for them.

You'll find that unlike the Dems bills, the Rep bill DOES NOT ban insurers from discriminating againt sick people.

Their solution is to force these people into "High Risk pools" run by the States (more government!) and therefore pay WAY MORE than others.

hauskalainen, insurance is still an industry of RISK. "Sick people"-lets take for example a 300 pound man with diabetes-pose a much higher risk and cost the insurance companies much more money. I know the dems claim that their bills won't take pre-existing conditions into account, but the fact is, those pre-existing conditions end up costing a lot of money and the insurance industry (and the government for that matter) just don't have the money to pay for ever person's every health issue

Anyone looking for this should note that this was offered as a substituting amendment to another bill HR3692, "the Affordable Health Care for America Act". I personally think that Congress needs to deal with any ailments of our health care system separately and individually. They should first identify the specific concerns or problems that all could agree needed attention and then could focus on a bill to deal with that single issue. The enormous size of the past 2,000 page plus bill, makes it incomprehensible to nearly all citizens and to some in congress. I would like to see simple, to the point bills, that everyone can understand. - K.I.S.S.

As an Obama & Price supporter/voter, I must say that these are two very intelligent men and they both have extremely good points. The biggest problem with the health care reform issue is that neither side wants to work with the other (no matter how they may act). I do commend the President for attending this event. It takes a lot of courage to speak with the other side, especially in public.
