  • Wow.

  • I saw MCC in Harvard Sq. this past summer. I was sitting outside Au Bon Pain next to the sidewalk and looked up to see her standing with a companion ( young female) about 3-4 feet away...so I said: "Mary!!!" and I admit that I was perplexed when she showed absolutely no sign of having heard me. So I tried waving my hand in front of her face and saying: "MARY!!!" So, I learned from this great lyrical poet that I don't exist...later her companion walked by alone and grinned in my general direction

  • @ZZZZAS Dude, if a strange guy shouted my name and then started to wave a hand in front of my face, I might punch him in the snoot for being the irritating and obnoxious twit that he was. Consider yourself lucky.

  • Saying Kathy is invasive is like saying Vince Gill's mandolin is invasive.I have no idea what this show was or why the three were there in that arrangement..BTW,if you want see invasion watch Kenny Rogers old music specials!

  • Magnificent! I too, found this by accident. The lyrics...whew!

  • I was kinda hoping they would make out... is that wrong?

  • One of my favorite songs. Never get tired of hearing this and these two wonderful talents.

  • I'm sorry to have to say this, but I wish Kathy had just let Mary sing this. Her input is intrusive.

  • Two of my favorites. Amazing how they blend. Thanks!

  • wonderful

  • incredible. glad I found this by chance

  • stunning.

  • When and if GAY marriages become legal in all states, this will be our 1st waltz as a "MARRIED" COUPLE. What a beautiful song of love. Straight or gay!

  • @hooliamc2 Gross... Why did you not just say "When I get married, or , If I get Married"? No one wants to know your gay. Why are you making a Gay issue about a song? You are NOT Normal. You never will be. Im offended that people like you think its OK & think it should be accepted.

  • I love both of their voices- so talented

  • This is nice real nice. Talent real Talent.

  • Great song, the way music should be sung no flashy lights or stage flash just honest people singing an honest song, great mix of guitar & mandeline.

  • mikemorehead71...I am very much acquainted with Beth Nielsen Chapman! I love " "Sand and Water" . She writes a lot about the pain of loss. Did she lose a husband or a loved one?

  • I found this extraordinary gift from a very special playlist and it has brought me to tears all day. Nightingale knows how to give from her little bird beating loving heart and it always comes so easily. She is a poet and words have profound meaning to her. This song has touched her soul as none other ever! The Sunshine peeping his head out from behind the rain clouds of last night proving he knows her by heart and understands HER fear is melting in his prayers from winter, hope born this Spring!

  • So beautiful!!! I agree 1000% with 781's and turtlehen's comments.............I LOVE this!

  • Two amazing voices. Thank you for finding this. MCC is an amazing talented person.

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS. Gorgeous!

  • I agree with you both! Thanks for posting!

  • These 3 very talented people no longer have radio careers!! WHY?? This is LIVE!! No lip syncing here!! Mary Chapin and Kathy Mattea have voices like BUTTER!! Reba still has a great radio and CMT/GAC career and I love her but, these ladies are just as talented. Lets bring these great singers back to radio and CMT/GAC.

And Vince Gill is a National Icon. He is just as great as George Strait and to my estimation a better singer. Why have the radio listening public forgot about them?

  • @briandoty11866 "... talented people no longer have radio careers!! WHY??" Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, et. al. who have talent that appeals to a much younger demographic. In short....MCC, KM, Vince Gill, KT Oslin, Holly Dunn, etc. simply will not bring people out to concerts en mass and are not as marketable as the younger folks. Baillie and the Boys is another example of this: they're GREAT. But the profit margin isn't there in showbiz.

  • @whiskeyjack57 how can you say Taylor swift has no talent? She writes quite a few songs, and they're pretty decent. I dont listen to mainstream radio anyway, but really. I prefer Suzy Bogguss actually to MCC.

  • @VASINGER I agree that Suzy Bogguss has a better voice overall (though I think MCC lower/huskier voice is better suited to some of the songs in her repertoire; I doubt "Shut up and kiss me","I Feel Lucky" or "The More Things Change" would sound better with Suzy on vocals, Mary just has that touch of blues in her voice that Suzy lacks). But on the whole I favor MCC over Suzy because MCC writes her own songs while Suzy rarely does, and writing a good song is often a lot harder than just singing it

  • Love this. I was lucky enough to see Mary Chapin and Kathy Mattea in concert together with Suzy Boggus in the mid 1990's

  • Simply beautiful

  • America's Got Talent alright. But it's not what most folks think. 3/4 time is a hard sell in the popular music industry I bet. She's one of the few who writes and performs it best. LOvely stuff.

  • i saw mcc and vince gill at a concert at blossom music center in cleveland, warm night, outside, one of my wifes and my favorite memories.

  • amazing song, with a great sentiment , and great voices.

  • Mary!!! Where the hell are you???

  • what year was this? I just adore Chapin! She is my absolute favorite singer-songwriter. Kathy and Vince are wonderful too. I always thought Chapin, Kathy, and Suzy Bogguss should recodr an album together. or Chapin, Trisha Yearwood and Kim Richey....or Chapin with anybody...LOL

  • @clarkkent76 Weird! I saw Chapin, Kathy and Suzy Bogguss in concert together in the 90's! Best concert I ever went to!

  • The 1st time I saw MCC perform was on Austin City Limits when she was still unheard of. I liked her then and I love her now!!

  • Wouldn't it be cool if they all produced an album together including this song?

  • I agree!

  • Just beautiful. MCC is the best songwriter of our day. I had a chance to see her in person in June and it was the best concert I have ever seen. It's good to have her back after her illness.

  • My heart is touched.

  • This is so beautiful!! I love it!

Thank you and to StuartStreet for sharing!

  • Thanks for posting

  • What a beautiful blend of perfectly complimentary voices!

  • Love the song...for those of you looking for a recording of it...quick iTunes search found Wendy Keith released it in 2008 and it is available to download. It is not MCC and Kathy, but she does a decent job.

  • Wonderful......beautiful........exquisite! Thank you!!!

  • I love their voices...Mary Chapin Carpenter was one of the most talented in the 80's and Kathy is good too. Of course we all know Vince has good vocals (as well as a great guitar player)

  • I saw this live and had it on VHS tape for the longest time. Like one of the other commenters, I figured I'd never see it again. Thanks muchly! =)

  • Great stuff!

  • OMG! I use to have this on VHS and it got recorded over...I thought I would never hear this song again. This is a wonderful song. Why it was never on a CD I'll never understand..... Thanks for putting this on here.

  • Wow, the voices of MCC and Kathy, meshed so smoothly, Vince on mandolin, everything worked. Very nice

  • I also found it by accident and I think this is one of the most amazing songs I´ve ever heard!!!! Great singers and great lyrics!!!!

  • I've been in love with Mary Chapin Carpenter for a long, long time; the poet in her words, the minstrel in her voice, the passion in her heart. Still, it completely escapes me how she, or anyone, could speak for me the way that she does. How is it that she wrote this song for such as someone such as I...? This song is about me, whether or not she ever will know.

  • I just listened to Taylor Swift's performance at the Grammys and then come to this and just have to shake my head. Here is talent - long proven talent. Can someone explain how these folks are not incredible why Swift is?

  • The problem is the msic buying audience is between 14 and 25 years old. The work by Mary Chapin, Patti Griffin, Shawn Colvin, etc. is grown up music. Let us pause for a moment to note the sensitivity of the mandolin playing by Vince Gill, remarkable. Kathy Mattea slipped up slightly on the lyrics and was embarrassed (I saw this when it aired the first time) and the reason you notice it is because you are transfixed by the performance, hearing every word, every tone. So poetic

  • @machyrudinaceus This is music sung by musicians not by a product of the recording studios. Don't make music like this now cause it don't sell records to the kiddies.

  • @machyrudinaceus Got me stumped too! I actually had to interperse the Grammies with Youtubes of folks like these singing ( and mostly Krauss ;D) just to get through that show.

  • Absolutely beautiful - love MCC and Kathy.

  • Great song, now I can go to sleep:-)

  • What a beautiful song - such fantastic lyrics

  • Talk about two voices complementing each other.. I could listen to both of them all day

  • I fiound this quite by accident, and boy, am I grateful!!! This is simply beautiful. Another one of MCC's lyric poems set to music. This woman is one of the most overlooked treasures in entertainment history. Why she isn't in the Pantheon of modern day composers is not only a mystery...it's almost a crime! You can listen to her stuff and just be transported by the personal nature of her stories, the intelligence of her lyrics, and the mellow beauty of her melodies. What an absolute gem!

  • @781Florist look up the plethora of items that are on You Tube by Beth Nielsen Chapman, who has written work for both MCC and Kathy Mattea

  • Just beautful - no more needs to be said :)

  • @781Florist I also found this by accident. omg, love it soooo very much and even though I'm not a huge fan of Vince Gill, I so admire his generosity and contribution in this. kudos to all....can't get enough of this song :-)

  • Music the way it was meant to be. Gorgeous!

MCC is the best female songwriter of our time.

  • Kathy and Mary Capin have such a gorgeous to one another's voices!

  • Oh love this don't remember hearing it before two of my favorite musicians

  • Now this country music not the shit out today !1 Beat keith Urbans ass !!

  • I agree; but its not the singer/songwriters that are the problem. The industry is negligent in bringing the next generation of producers into the recording studio. Singers and Bands now all sound the same, its only the imagery that is being transformed.

  • Chapin and Kathy! Great Song

  • Is this on a CD somewhere? HELP I love this song

  • Hey, I have looked and still am, If I find it, I'll let you know. And if you do , Please let me know, ok? ok,

  • Once again Chapin writes from MY heart... it's like she has read my journal.

Thank you MCC... and Kathy Mattea two of my favorites

  • Thank you BRod! More great stuff from the classy MCC!

  • first time...love, love, love me some MCC; hope to see her back in the high life again. true talent...

  • I just saw this for the first time and have this enormous smile on my face 5 min. after the video ended. I have been enthralled with MCC and her music for over 20 years now - there is none better than her.

  • that was beautiful, thanks. B

  • one of MCC best. Check out Mara O'

Connell version. I don't think this song got it's just due from the public.

  • WOW...so beautiful!

  • and gentle and simple.

  • MCC is recovering from being ill just before last summer cut her some slack...but i agree... she is extremely gifted.

  • Mary Chapin Carpenter, no one can conceptualize in songwriting and singing as well as you. Come on, add a few more stars to your crown. This is not the time to rest upon your laurels.

  • MCC writes the most intelligent lyrics of any artist I've seen.

  • Mary Chapin Carpenter, where are you??? You are such a beautiful and talented soul; please get in top touring shape and go on the road with other artists. I know touring is tough, but the world needs to hear the songs you write and sing. You'll feel better than you've ever felt in your life. You've already made your place in the music world, but you will be zoning in Maslow's self-actualization stage if you just go out and entertain as you please now. The world needs you to self-actualize.

  • Beautiful!

  • Oh that is soooooooooooo beautiful - thank you MCC, Kathy Mattea, and Vince..........absolutely gorgeous.

    Saskia

  • Fantastic video....thanks.. MCC, Kathy Mathea, and Vince ..... what a combination...

I could keep listening to this song over and over....
