If you own or going to bye a ford F150 truck or any VEHICLE that has a 5.4 3 valve engine DON"t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The spark plugs are a pain to change (break off) and cost about 600. and the camphases go out between 40,000 60, and 80,000 the cost to fix is about 2,200.
If you know anyone who this has happen to please call 1800-392-3673 and complain they said if there is enough issues they may recall and pay for it.
they have been screwing up the last few years in the engine dept. the 6.0 deisel then the 3 valve the worst engine ive ever seen hope theese new engines there making are better
@0LoL0CoPeRaTeD no, but they have brake problems lol. i don't know whats more important. accelerating or baking lol. not to mention there terrible frames.
@0LoL0CoPeRaTeD ya they just rot away on you.keep buying foreign vehicles and do your part to help sink this country.yaya there made here but were does the money go.well maybe one day when your out of work and can not find a job you can eat your toymotor have a nice day
Toyota is in no way responsible for the econonomic troubles facing the country. Neither is any Foreign auto maker. It's greedy multi generational debt.
Usually the F150's will make the noise it when the engine has reached running temperature. You'll notice that when you start it up on a cool day or cold day that your truck sounds a bit normal/quiet, as the engine oil is thick and isn't leaking out of the tensioners. But once the engine thins out from high temperature, they leak out of the tensioner, which causes the cam timing to be slightly off, causing the ticking noise we all hear
Since I am doing my phasers my self, the parts alone cost around 750 dollars. It includes 2 phasers (most expensive, roughly 250 a piece), 2 tensioners, 3 front engine cover gaskets, 2 valve cover gaskets, and a crank pulley bolt. The estimated time on doing this for ford standards is 8-10 hours. f150'S naturally have decently quiet tick to them, but as the engine goes through wear and tear, the tensioner gaskets start to leak, which usually goes unseen or unheard of, which causes problems dtr
I have an 06 5.4 3V as well, and my Ford dealership said it was not a common problem. They said it was normal wear and tear and the the warranty would not cover it. So I am now looking at a $1,400 bill. I just ran a carbon cleaner through the oil and ran it for 150 miles and did the oil change. I've heard its the oil being used, I put in a 10W30 Full Synthetic and half a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment. But now it seems to shake on a stop, any other suggestions?
I have this exact noise. Most people who think they know everything say "Oh that tick is just a normal sound!" The answer is yes, to a certain extent. The noise you have is the BORDERLINE noise of coming from your cams. You will need to replace your cam tensioners, and possibly phasers as well. 04-08 all had these problems. I know this because I work at a Ford dealership and I know the EXACT symptoms and I have an 04 F150 which I am going to replace the phasers on.
make sure you get your timing chains, tensioners, guides and sprokets done when the cam phasrers are deiseling your timing chains are slappin around and eatin there way through everything
i have an 04 f150 with the 3v 5.4L and it makes the same noise. Its the cam phaser which isn't too big of a deal but it can be in the long run. I just got the new phaser and am going to install it today!
i have a 2005 with the 5.4 i was hearing it bad right up around the front driver door at idol and i took it to ford place and another mechanic both told me it had to do with the cam shafts that it was normal for these engines
Wow my truck does the exact same thing, but only when I first start it, after 10+ minutes and it's warm, it really quiets it down. I was worried I caused it by putting one of those POS K&N Intakes in it with the exposed filter and some sand got into it
im a ford technician and repair these engines all the time. ford failed with the design of this engine. even if base oil pressure is slightly too low it fucks up the vct operation causing a rattle noise.
My 04 has the same problem. Has continually gotten worse. Ford didn't know what it was (have taken in at least 5 times over 3 years). Multiple Ford dealerships kept telling me it was either normal or that they didn't hear it. Now they tell me oil passages are blocked and that the repair is more expensive than a new engine...they suggest new engine at $7,400. What engine should be replaced at 110k miles when it's well maintained?
Mine did the exact same thing. It's in the shop this very moment getting a replacement engine pit in. Only had 58000 miles on it. Cam phasers went. Timing chain is screwed and then there's this other little problem. The fucking thrush bearings(main bearings) are screwed. So in short more money to fix it rather than replace it. Do yourself a favor and take it in asap. It's only gonna get worse. And if you don't have a warranty buy one now cuz it's costing around 5 grand to replace it and labor
the rattling you here is the timing chains when they arnt fully pressurised, youll here the same thing every start up too...and its not just a rattle is it its a complete fluttering effect/flatspot with ticking when ya hold it at certain revs... if you do nothing it will wear out the cam lobes and fingers! i know undoubtedly that its the oil and that it stuffs the timing! just do as i said below and youll be on ya way!
change oil to 5-20w run engine de carb cleaner drop oil....and fuel system cleaner and octane boost!
the ticking is bad timing caused by incorrect oil flow to the cam phasers wich inturn adjusts your cam timing and ecu values...thicker oil will cause bad milage engine miss and backfiring wich can pop a sparkplug out of its thread in these 5.4s.
the firing chambers! give it some time to adjust the ecu and the noise will go away just like mine did!!
shut your mouth..jesus christ every company has problems with their vehicles ..so that bend over you bought a ford comment is just stupid.. chevy dodge ford..all have their problems.. it might be cool for you to sit there and bash on ford or whatever because its what all the cool people do these days but seriously grow up the guy has a ford he probably likes ford he obviously wanted peoples help or opinion not to listen to your stupid smartass comments
Hey man I'v herd this be for , because my lariat came with the same ticking nose. I took it to ford and they fixed it, it was like 1500 hundred bucks but i only played 50. but its all good though...
Simple fix really, I just went ahead and replaced my sparkplugs to make sure they were all tightened up. If you do it yourself try to get all the dirt and crap from around the sparkplugs ya dont want that going into your engine. But most slight ticking is due to the phasers! but its worth checkin otherwise to save yourself a big repair bill if it ends up bein a sparkplug issue!
Yea but if it gets really obvious ticking wise and you possibly start to get a missfire it's from a sparkplug comming loose it's real common on f150s with the 5.4 I caught mine before it blew a plug out (alota idiots say oh fords are pos's they blow sparkplugs out stripping the threads! Too bad the idiot is usually the owner ignoring an obviously loud ticking noise) mine was actually startin to blow exhaust out around the coil boot. Only had 39,000 miles on it just bad torqin from the factory!
i had the same prob on my 04...you should hear a "tick" noise because of the injectors but it shouldnt be that bad...i had my upper phasers done under warranty
the tech said it can be the phasers and the lash adjusters and they can actually cause more damage if not repaired,r u still in warranty? im out so i will have to do this myself
Actually I haven't done anything....Most people I've talk to say this is normal and not to lose any sleep over...Kinda hard seeing that I just bought the truck. Really nice truck, just sounds kinda bad when its warmed up..What have you heard?....It's definatly the Cam Phasers though
i'll tell u right now mine was tickin like that and not long after i almost got stuck on the side of the road because she would shake bad when i hammered past 50 miles an hr , i'd get that replaced if i were u
While it might be common, its NOT normal. There is a difference. Try not to take mechanical advise from NON-Mechanics. The cam phaser is there for a reason. It is not supposed to be making noise. Bend over, you bought a Ford.
@b3ross knew somebody with an 04 5.4 3v and it was doing the same thing, it cost like 2800 to fix and the mechanic had to take off basically everything in the upper part of the engine and i think replaced the cam shaft
@firefighter254 ive had my 04 since 04, bought it brand new, 5.4, it has made that little knocking sound since day one, it has gotten a little louder since i put exhaust and a intake on it, but its still quite mild. Every ford mechanic I have spoken with says that this is just how the 3v motors, work/sound?
Send this message to everyone you Know!!!!
