Actually the nitrogen doesn't really change its charge at all in its conversion to nitrite, so in old school definition it really doesn't oxidize, however that's the old definition so really oxidation still applies in this situation.

Nope! It was for Bio 106 en me college. I didn't get full points on it either because I didn't cover the nitrogen cycle in the soil. It didn't say that in the requirements, but must have been implied...I was displeased. I do know how this works in my tanks though! That's all it's good for in my life at the present!
