@pjbaldes They are back! i got my tix, after Sept 30 when i see the original GBfuckingV play live in Austin i will be able to die a happy and fulfilled blowfish.
wish they would have showed this in the UK around this time as it was when i first got into them & my life changed forever!!!! Didn't get to see them in the UK til 2002.
Wow, I was never fortunate enough to see this lineup live. I didn't get into GBV until late in the game, despite living in Cincinnati/Dayton all my life. This lineup was fantastic, no question about it, maybe even the best. But Pollard has done some amazing stuff afterward as well.
Greatest fucking band to ever grace earth. Booze, high fives, cigarettes, riffs, karate kicks and exceptional songwriting. I'd give my right nut to see them again.
There was no classic line up, well maybe, but the thing is there was many line ups, and basiclly it comes down to Bob, it's like Mark E Smith and the Fall, he is the band... just lucky enough he kept finding people who shared his vision.
This may just be me, but may favorite GBV album by far is Bee Thousand, which was heavily influenced by Tobin Sprout. I've always thought of that as the "classic line-up" before their massive go clash that result in Robert ditching the entire band for new guys.
WHAT? You cant make Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand over and over again. I think Guided By Voices got better with age. So what if Pollard drinks onstage? So what? What the hell is wrong with Nate Farley? Isnt rock and roll is supposed to be fun? Drinking and drugs did not destroy Guided By Voices--they never were destroyed sucka! A bow out at the right time. All the detractors--wheres your album?????
I agree with wayved. Part of GBV/Pollard's charm is/was the drunkenness. Yes, the "classic" lineup was short-lived. This may have been due to drugs and booze but who cares? Bobby Pollard is obviously not the easiest guy in the world to get along with but witn his songwriting talent, who cares? The thing I've always found funny is the irony in the fact that Pollard is vilified for his proclivity to drink at the same time that he is being celebrated for his prolific songwriting talents.
Well Mr. Snark, having followed GBV since the days I was living in Dayton in 1992, I'll cofirm that khakjaan is absolutely right. In fact, the drinking and drugs played a very significant role in the disintegration of the beloved "classic" line-up seen here, and saddled us with about 10 years of that idiot Nate Farely on guitar.

i'd put sprout's songs up against pollard's any day. they were both great, and gbv just sounds hollow without tobin, imo.
