Do i take it by your name that you're a regina spektor fan? If so, I'm surprised you've never heard of julian, given that he toured with her, years ago - and if i'm not mistaken, he wasn't doing covers. As for 'doing something creative', maybe do a little search on youtube, or go to julian's website. You'll find a fair few of his own songs. And you're right - he is, and will be even more, successful because his material doesn't copy other people - it's original.
