Excellent, but heart-breaking: brave, beautiful Joel. Am pleased to note that recent research (Adler's biography) has pretty much confirmed that this was a hideous miscarriage of justice, and identified the likely culprit.
the IWW slogan was abolitionism of capitalism it was a radical syndicalist organization aiming to give workers power over there factories they are heroes we need to fight capitalism communism is a dead end we need syndicalism
@GodlessWhore : Me, a liberal socialist? Hardly. I don't abide by labels. I won't place myself into the boxes they've made for us for ease of classification.
If you find yourself on the Left and discontented, maybe the time has come to follow the lead of the Right------ARM YOURSELVES!--------the Right is not the only side that knows what the 2nd Ammendment sez..
I've done some work in Utah from time to time. And whenever we went there, I told my coworkers to make sure if I got killed, that my body can't be found on this barren Utah ground.
@adelaideonaplane That's how the powers-that-be want it. Not focusing on the important issues but on fluff, filler and garbage. An ignorant society (no offense intended.) where they feed you what they want you to hear, i.e., TMZ and Faux "news". We need to wake up, folks.
The melody is an old Appalachian folk tune called John Hardy that dates back to the 1800's. Both Woody and Phil were taking a cue from Joe Hill by setting revolutionary lyrics to an existing tune.
I live in Australia and our great tragedy is, as it is in any industrialised nation is that there are still more than 10 million people in the grind of daily employment, trying to keep up with the latest consumer comfort. Work for yourself before working for a boss. How do you live a DIY life? Leave your employment and then don't take the dole. Then you have the right conditions for learning how to live!
As a union man, I gotta say fuck Utah. The Mormons killed him because he wanted the working man to have his due for the toil he endured making them rich while they struggled to survive.
Great vid. Thanks for posting. Joe Hill was a REAL American hero. He stood up for the little guy. A man who fought for real equality, equity, justice and what should be "The American Way".
My late father would often tell us kids of a great man named Joe Hill. . . .having watched this, I can now better understand his life and the struggles of the time.
It took a long time for our country to get an eight hour day as well..
All thanks to those who fought for a better life of . . . .
Joe Hill, on facing his execution by the USA, Inc. government, for a crime he didn't commit: "Waste no time in mourning. ORGANIZE!" The capitalists hire others to do their bidding and cry and moan when facing justice; the left face the firing squad of injustice with dignity.
@WinrarIsMe : Those are nice, Utopian type words, but they're just words. Black on white crime continues to escalate. Whites are gradually becoming extinct. The most logical solution is segregation, and self determination. This way, no one can blame the other for their failures.
@MattShizzle : Stormfront has nothing to do with it. More Americans are awakening daily to the fact that diversity = divisiveness, and only creates more troubles than otherwise. Who ever came up with the concept of integration, and "diversity"? I suppose whites can't leave California fast enough because of the wonders of diversity. The most successful nations in history have always been monoracial. Facts speak for themselves.
@Rykemasters : The Roman Empire crumbled from within, just like America is today, and for the same reasons. The UK is being overrun by 3rd World entrants, and eroding daily. I'm not all that informed about the histories of the Ottoman, Persian, or French.
if you were maybe you'd understand how powerful the Ottomans were cause of their liberally diverse court also stop for as econd and think that maybe the people the UK oppressed for so many decades felt the same away about their invading british counterparts
Persians were the good guys, Greeks were slave owners
Joe Hill, (Joel Emmanuel Hägglund), born 7 oktober 1879 i Gävle, Sweden. The house where he lived as a child in the old part of Gävle is now museum. I live just a few blocks from there.
Every man has to die. Death by scantily clad French maid don't sound so bad, but dying as a rebel hero sounds better. As Crazy Horse and the Lakota say, "Hoka Hey!", "Today is a good day to die". I did always like Benny Hill... Sooner or later, we'll all be where he is, and where Joe is, too. See ya there!
Bo Wideberg Swedish filmdirector Made A very good Film about Joe Hills life!Bo Wideberg come from a poor labor family and never forgot his roots. He had an Oscar for the film Elvira Madigan!I recommend the Film! Very good!
Thats right!A Great film about the "Massacre in Ådalen in Sweden 1931"!The Military
massacred Strikin workers that made an peaceful march!Their "Crime was Hunger, never forget them" tompstones! At that time Sweden was near a revolution! One of the Poorest Counties. And have most Strikes in the world! It´s a central moment in Swedens history!AND IT`S SHOWES THAT FIGHT WORKS!After THIS Massacre!THE Corporate Owners were AFRAID And Sweden Slowely Became a relative WELFARE STATE!See the Film!
Lets commit a truly revolutionary act, leave your employment and then refuse welfare. Then you will find yourself in a position of having to learn how to live. The fact that people are too frightened to do so, is because they believe what they have been told, that outside of their employment they are incapable. Long human history proves otherwise.
Joe Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund, and also known as Joseph Hillström (October 7, 1879 -- November 19, 1915) was a Swedish songwriter, labor activist and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), also known as the Wobblies. He was executed for murder after a controversial trial. After his death, he became the subject of several folk songs
Yes, but that was Ochs' point. Joe Hill took melodies from popular songs and hymns and rewrote the lyrics (so "The Sweet By and By" became "The Preacher and the Slave"). Ochs did with the John Hardy melody what Joe Hill would have done. Call it a tribute.
I'm really glad you posted this :D I recently wrote a paper on the historical role of American music as a gateway towards a cosmopolitan ideal. I reviewed songs by Joe Hill, the Hutchinson Singers, and songs sung by African slaves. I most enjoyed Hill's songs. He was a brave man and used his art to speak out for the cause of the poor without MTV or a recording contract. He should be taught in all history classes.
My will is easy to decide For there is nothing to divide My kin don't need to fuss and moan "Moss does not cling to a rolling stone." My body? - Oh. - If I could choose I would to ashes it reduce And let the merry breezes blow My dust to where some flowers grow Perhaps some fading flower then Would come to life and bloom again This is my Last and final Will Good Luck to All of you --- Joe Hill
Janet Bates's husband, Ken, recites the above "Final Will" at the beginning of the "Joe Hill" song popularized by Joan Baez (and others). The song is available on the CD "The Colours Will Come Back" by Janet Bates and the Instruments of Change. Like much of Janet Bates work, I never get tired of hearing this song, even if I play it over and over. She is truly a talented artist, and she has a voice quite similiar to Joan Baez, in her younger days. Give it a listen. You won't be disappointed.
i've had the CD this comes from for years - amazing stuff - 2 of my heroes Billy and Phil singing (or writing) about someone we should all know about!
Shall we call this the "J.H." melody? Same tune for John Hardy (Ledbelly) and John Henry. O, well, a good piece of music should be used over and over.
And Guthrie's "Tom Joad," too, though that breaks up the JH theme. :) But it's appropriate Ochs wrote the lyrics to a popular melody. That's just what Joe Hill did.
Many THANKS!
