Jewel didn't write it. Marianne Faithfull wrote it in the 60's and she based it on part of the Tenessee Williams script of "Orpheus Descending" aka "The Fugitive Kind" with Marlon Brando. Search YouTube for "He sleeps on the wind" and you can hear his monologue on "the little bird." Pretty cool.
