The language Indians have been speaking for many eons is Hindi. @stickturn it's quite common knowledge here that the word Sindhu is Sanskrit meaning the Indus river, plus you'll find loads of other history related websites. Wikipedia also marks its sources and so can be cross verified at any time. Urdu has an Arabic script because the Moghals inculcated it in India at the time. Urdu over time was entirely written in Arabic script.

You are right in saying that Hindi speakers include Urdu words in Hindi even though there are Hindi words for the same. continued

@stickturn Hindi words used in Urdu are mainly verbs, pronouns, etc. So the sentence "Yeh meri kitab hai" has the word kitab from Urdu and the rest from Old Hindi. Both Indians and Pakistanis would say it like this.

Just think about it.. It would have been impossible to make the entire country of India speak a new Persian language. It was easier to just inculcate some Persian words into the already spoken Hindi language. Therefore modern Hindi still uses those Persian influenced words.

And in modern Hindi, some nouns are popularly interchangeable with Urdu words, even though they may have their original Hindi word for it. There were many languages like Sanskrit, Prakrit, Persian, and others, and Urdu was a synthesis of all these languages but in Arabic script. Hindi derived more from Sanskrit but was, like Urdu, a synthesis of these languages in Devanagari script. Please don't feel insecure when I state that Urdu precedes Hindi. I am not trying to denigrate Hindi.
