  • This book is the reason that I always colored cats purple. C:

  • When I was three, I memorized this book and when turn the pages. I then showed my parents how I could "read".

  • oh this is so special! what a treat.....childrens books are just the most amazing things and truly the building blocks of our lives.......you can trace so much back to what books we read as kids...the lorax was huge for me! i still sneer at smokestacks :)

  • legendary =D

  • Excellent reading. Now I know how it was intended to be read.

I like how it gets meta at the end. Nice touch. Lastly: I never knew this author had such broad shoulders. You picture people in your mind you know, and inside there he just had normal shoulders.

  • my mom loves this book =) Good times

  • This needs a techno remix, just saying.

  • I used to be freaked out by this book

  • my mom would always ask me "little butt little butt what do you see?" and i would say "i see a big butt looking at me!" lol

  • @ShadowWillowRP haha. when i was little my dad would always read me books and replace words with "butt" and "poop" and "pee". It was good times.

  • Bill was magic. He's making up the tune as he goes along. I love him! He worked in my second grade classroom in the 70s and sang this same song! What a treasure.

  • I am not surprised that the purple cat looks worried if there is a big white dog looking at it.

  • I don't care what the bear SEES. What does he EAT?

  • @jimmykinkade He eats his veggies. Thats why he is strong.

  • @95688kage veggies? pfffft. I think the bear eats children.

  • My children will do anything if I let them see this clip.

  • The Texas Board of Education banned this book, in January 2010, because it thought the book was written by the same Bill Martin who penned the non-children's book "Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation."

  • @cpetersky I remember that!!! Our principal was like "whuttttt??????" and let us keep using the book. Lolol!

  • isn't it just thought children about colors? I mean, if this book being banned, what does exactly those people gets from this book? racism? idiot.

  • @blacklavoux I felt the same way -__- It's not even this book that got to people. It's Bill Martin's "Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation." They don't like the author (the guy reading the book). People are really stupid..

  • This was banned...

  • @SimlishSammy - It was a hoax. A mix-up with the authors or something. Lol.

  • @rikusora1200

    no seriously

    look it up

  • @SimlishSammy - It was BRIEFLY banned because of a mix-up of another Bill Martin author/philosopher, who wrote "Ethical Marxism". But it's no longer banned because it was a different Bill Martin.

  • @rikusora1200

well sorry, i guess the daily yahoo news is not a good source of info. xD

  • @SimlishSammy - Sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound as rude as it did. XD

  • @rikusora1200

    lol no it's okay :)

  • I remember this book from grade school :]

    purple cat? o.O

  • @RebelHQ You know! From Alice in Wonderland :P

    :D

  • Apparently this book was banned by author Bill Martin is a supposed communist. I'm not even kidding either!

  • @tizotube100

The author is not a communist, its another guy with the exact same name!

  • @RebelHQ I said "apparently," so don't try to ridicule me

  • Why is this book banned?!

  • @lunatikapr009

The author has the same name as some communist guy, they thought it was the same person but its really a different guy.

  • Why is this book banned?!

  • If you guys liked this video you should click the Little Chief video response above the comments. It's adorable!

  • @luigta86 this is a good book

  • HAHAHAHA for some reason, this makes me bust out laughing. Must be the way he sang it. This is an epic book from my childhood. "perple cat, perple cat!" XDXDXD!

  • A blue horse? Oh my. A purple cat? I want one :]

  • i remember reading this in kindergarten! <3

  • i wish it was longer :(

  • colours and animails, great job!!! thanks

  • oh wow i remember this story from PRESCHOOL!!

we made a little book of our own to go with the story

  • this book is great, but doesn't this lose some of the magic like this? the whole point of these books is to READ them to your children... reading and cognitive skills start long before they are actually able to read.

  • What a job to hear Bill's voice once again. No one can read it like he does. I loved him as a person and treasure this video/audio.

  • YESSSSSS !!!

    HAHAHAHHH

    OBGVDjbcdjbv

    <333333

    this is wayyy too goood.

  • Love this...it's great hearing how the author actually reads his own work!

  • <3

I loved this book. I wish I could buy a copy but my mom would comment on how I wasted money on baby books so I'll wait until I move out.

  • @kkcutie I hate people who start arguments over the internet

  • I remember vividly seeing Bill Martin's PBS show in class, in b/w. He'd open it playing a guitar. And his reading of "A bat is born" still stays with me as tho I'd just seen it. Seeing this clip of an older Bill Martin brought it back quite clearly.

  • I am not surprised that the cat looked worried when he saw a dog looking at him.

  • No, Bill Martin definitely is the author. Eric Carle is the illustrator. :)

  • Actually I think Eric Carle is the author of this book not Bill Martin, although he does a good job narrating...

  • Written by BIll Martin, illiustrated by Eric Carle.

  • SHE FLIES ON WINGS OF WHEAT

  • There's no teacher in my version of this book, it's a monkey, instead. And that's my little boy's fave bit... "MONKEY!!!!!!!!!!"

  • (clapping)

    genius

  • i love this book its was my favourite when i was little

  • @02chloe metoo

  • does anybody remember the stories narrated by "noodles"? can't find them anywhere...

  • dude I used to be able to recite this book faster than a high school kid reading it.

  • beautiful!!

in mu country the only people that seem to be allowed of childrens`education at schools are just young women.. i love an older man singing with that ethusiasm as this teacher does. I guess kids would love hearing him too. Benkyu, your kid is smarter than all of us! jajajaj

  • My son said the red bird should have responded, " I see a brown bear of course!", which I thought was brilliant!

Still the book is a classic gem.

  • My favorite story as a child :)

  • My Children have always loved this book! Thanks for sharing!

  • Could you possiblly send me a copy of this file for a French school? The students learned the story from listening to this voice and they need the file for their project asap if it is possible.

  • lol i love his enthusiasm :)

  • I see some dentists watch this movie, expecting something interesting comes up.

  • Bill Martin, Jr., was one of the most important educators and children's book authors of our time. He was, and will always be, a national treasure.

Thank you for posting his read-aloud and a glimpse of his lovely face.

  • my 1 year old LOVES this and the book. she watches it several times a day. she says " brown bear brown bear i see "

  • Love the post

  • When I was in 6th grade, I won a Young Author's competition at our school. I got to go to the Young Author's Conference where the featured author was Bill Martin! It was exciting to meet him. At our school we used all the reading anthologies that started with "Sound of..." Sounds I Remember, Sounds of Home, Sounds of Laughter, etc. They were great! I loved them all. Thank you for posting this.

  • Bill Martin Jr. is my great-uncle!

I never met him though, so it's great see footage like this (: Thanks for posting.

  • finally, someone who knows the order of the animals...wonderful story.

  • If you have children, Google Search:
