Hvorostovsky ingolata tones detracts. Compare to Baritones Lawrence Tibbett, John Charles Thomas. Fleming was right when she said the sopranos of the past had much brighter tones which was representative of the Golden Era of Singing.
This gives me an extraordinary pleasure, sblood! Many thanks to present us this scene, truthfully! I just saw this rendition 5 times or 6 before making this comment and I am still thirsty of it, if I may so express myself!:))
In 2:47 they gave WRONG TRANSLATION. I don't know, why. Onegin is quite... mmm... insolent. And many words of his have that overbearing flavour.
The translation should be: "I let you know - I was sent to you by God". Not HER to HIM. He is all about himself. I understand that sometimes they correct translation so it sounds better in foregn language but here they gave completely opposite meaning to phrase.
This was a year or two before the Met production. I appreciate it more now that I have seen the whole opera. Renee and Dmitri attained the ultimate in singing and acting in this magnificent opera.
And also Onegin's face tension when Tatyana sings that high note before "I still love you" and how he reacts after that sentence really make a HUGE difference from an A++ grade performance to a B grade performance. As a singer myself, in many cases you can't be perfect in singing every note the ideal way you want, but the stage acting would make your singing more "ideal" and "perfect".
Fxxking excellent singing and acting! I am a musical theater performer, I really can feel that each notes of their singing, and each actions of their acting, devotes Onegin's firecely fire and Tatyana's deep love and conflict in her heart. And the music itself fxxking match this scene and create great dramas. I especially like Tatyana's high note before she sings "I still love you", and Onegin's last note when the orchestra play loud and create a strong drama there.
is this available on dvd? if so, i must get it. where is this from, anyway? truly magnificent performances from both. i can't wait to see them at the met next year. fleming sounds just right, plenty of dramatic power and yet still youthful--and always gorgeous--voice; i've heard too many rather mature tatyanas. well, dmitri is possibly the best onegin IN HISTORY! that's all i can say of him.
Don't we wish it were??? The Met performances were to die for and everyone I know who saw the HD presentation went back for the encore presentation. If you ever find this on dvd PLEASE let me know.
According to Hvorostovsky, her Russian was very good. Perhaps he might be considered enough of an expert to judge correctly. However, I grant you that sopranos are the hardest to understand, especailly when they are singing at the top of their range.
as Russian myself - yes, she is very good. I can understand her not less clear than Russian singers. She has accent but listening to her singing... It's impossible to notice such little thing to me when I hear her voice.
i;m sobbing.

It is like a magic that only one high note of Tatyana speaks her heart out, and the last note of Onegin creates the despair drama.

How is Tatyana supposed to sound during this part of the opera? Her heart is being ripped apart.

Mrs Fleming is not a very great Tatiana (why so violent?) but Hvorostovsky is a beautifull Eugène!

She has a few vowels that can be considered a little too open at times to a native speaker. As far as lyric diction is considered it is passable.
