I agree, it is time that we change. So my family (with little kids) sold the car and now we
cycle 90 percent of the time and if we need a car we take the coop car. It is time we take action, ourself. It is not easy, but possible. In this way, we educate the next generation. Let us only hope that it is not too late. Watch Food Inc., the 11th hour or Gasland to change. We did, and we are healthier, happier and have kids who are very concerned, like us.
So few people are aware of this. We talk about wanting change, but change will come when enough people are educated about monstrosities such as this going on in our world, and demand for it to stop. Write to the people in power, tell your friends. Why should some celebrity video have more views than this?
The Alberta tar sands are a terrible, terrible thing. Makes the land polluted and useless. A shame. I don't care what you say. The land cannot be changed back to how it was; green and breathing. The big corporate interests don't care about anything but profit. Hopefully all the petroleum industry subsidies instigated by Stephen Harper and his conservative blind/dumb cronies will end soon enough.
How can you be a shareholder supporting the Alberta tar sands and not feel bad?
Make no mistake, this developement is controled by International companies and that stuff is going to the States. It`s a matter of National Security for the US and they wont allow any Canadian law which will put a brake on it. Canada has lost control over it. Btw have a look at the Alena article which oblige Canada to export an increasing pourcentage of it`s production, including import, to the US. You are not even allowed to divert any of it for the Eastern provinces which depend on imports.
Just saw this movie on DVD last night.... OMFG! what are we doing to our planet?! This "thing" / pool of chemicals is bigger than my country (Ireland)!
If water is to become very expensive in the future are we not putting laws or regulations in place to charge these companies for it?
i watched this beautiful film last night and it left me feeling very angry and upset. as a canadian citizen, i find this method of cash grabbing is going to ruin our country and its already starting. the only spoken part of this film is really impacting and makes me want to join the fight to end this fucked up way of making easy money...
First of all saying "shave your dreadlocks, wash your armpits and get an education " is really just ignorant babbling - I might suggest that you yourself "get educated" about environmental and social justice issues. The film is meant to open our eyes to the environmental impacts of an industry that destroys vast amounts of life-harbouring land. Nevermind the rediculous amount of water that is required to process the sand enough to get the oil out.
I am realizing the value of comments like the one you are rebutting. Really, it is time for us environmentalists to become real technicians with real solutions to meeting global energy demands. Criticizing the dominant system is easy. I do it too. But what are the real alternatives? We need to lead the way somehow.
@dontpanicjack The answers are there. Our "Harper" government must change it's imperialistic oil investing attitudes before we are "allowed" to explore these alternatives. Search "Four Ways to Solve the Energy Crisis"
There is also FREE perpetual energy, but with no money in it, the truth will be vigorously suppressed. Complacent consumers need realize their "creature comforts" are responsible and BE THE CHANGE.
what a stupid film. It show tailings ponds, that are a part of any mining operation. Any tailings pond has residual amounts of the product left in it. In this case it is oil. Imagine three or four uranium mines in one are. Or thorium, lead, wolfram and on and on and on. This is not the worst thing in the world. Instead of critisizing what is happening, shave your dreadlocks, wash your armpits and get an education on how to help the industry. Its not going anywhere soon, so deal with it.
@erockjmet I suppose you are in the oil or mining industry? Defend your profession all you want, but it still doesnt make it right. This is fucking up the entire world. We need alternate, clean sources of energy.
@SSkotte Yes I am in the industry. I worked for the third largest player in the oil sands. What the movie does not show you is how they were working on cleaning up the tailings ponds before the government even stepped in. NST technology is here and will be a big player in tailings development. People are dying from the water down stream? The movie did not show how the oil sand is naturally washed into the athabasca by erosion. Like I said. Get educated or wash some birds down in Florida.
wow how ignorant you are! The athabasca system was fine, for hundreds of thousands of years before humans stepped in. Explain how you could even think that the amount of people dying in fort chip alberta, are suddenly contracting rare types of cancers and diseases only associated with with toxic carcinogens. Not to mention the tar sands operation is being executed directly beside one of the largest national wildlife reserves in all of canada.
You must be one of those fools that think CO2 causes global warming. Its a hoax!! Where is the evidence that the Oil sands developments have caused these new unfortunate cancers. The products we consume everyday cause cancer. You cant call me ignorant in these issues. Who is to say that smoking is not causing the cancers these people are getting. What about drinking, using petroleum products, eating unhealthy. Im sure they had cancer long before the developments.
@erockjmet Bitumen is a thick, sticky form of crude oil, so heavy and viscous (thick) that it will not flow unless heated or diluted with lighter hydrocarbons. The process of seperating oil from the sand produces 10 to 45 percent more greenhouse gases than conventional drilling. The more greenhouse gases that are in the atmosphere, the more heat gets trapped, and as the temperature rises, the result is climate change. There's a fucking hole in the ozone you moron, or thats a hoax too.
@bodysnatcher1988 I know what the shit is. I have worked there for many years. I have seen first hand what they do to protect the environment. If you spill motor oil on the ground and not report it, you may loose your job. Now you talk about conventional drilling? Conventional drilling includes fracturing wells. Take a look at what happens to the world then. Canada produces 1% of GHG. Go figure. There is no proof that GHG causes global warming. Its sure cold this year ill tell ya dick.
@erockjmet global warming does not mean that everywhere will be hot, actually it really means that places that are cold will be colder and places that are hot will be hotter, or even places that are usually hot will be cold and visa versa. Even if global warming is not caused by humans,(unlikely) it is still occuring weather you like it or not. Increased tempurature causes the icecaps to melt, releasing even more carbon into the air, more carbon means more gasses get trapped in the atmosphere.
@erockjmet instead of being released into space. the sun heats up the gas and the cycle continues. The earth gets hotter, weather patterns change, drought occurs which causes forest fires, letting even more carbon into the atmosphere. all these things affect each other, the earth is all connected, if you dont think so then you are ignorant and selfish person. Not giving a shit doesnt mean things arent happeneing, it only makes you part of the problem and not part of the solution.
@erockjmet Im very sorry for you because i understand you are just trying to protect you're job and you dont want to be seen as a bad person, and you probably aren't, but just because they clean up oil spills and what have you, doesnt mean you see what goes on for real. You're just middle management, cutting down an entire pronvince's forest just so we can have another 50 years of oil doesnt help anyone.
actually you are wrong, scientists say that the ozone is capable of repairing itself in 50 years, that is if all the countries in the world ban ozone depleting chemicals and that's as long as they actually stick to the ban. And that number is also depending on weather and temperature as well, things that are affected by greenhouse gas emissions.
@serpico009 Im uninformed? I should read about it? Ive worked in engineering at the tar sands as well as operations. I know first hand what is done to mitigate the environmental impact. Tell me to read about it. Why dont you go and work there and see for yourself instead of READING about it. If you thinks its so bad, get an education like I, and help out. But instead you insist on saying nothing relevant to the cause. Your a waste of skin and air.
@erockjmet No, apologies, I actually addressed my reply to bodysnatcher, and then deleted my comment 'cause it was too confrontational/rude. I agreed with many of your comments. Sorry again for the confusion. Actually I would recommend the doc WATER ON THE TABLE to you if you have not seen it. Between all the tar sands reports I've read and what's going on with natural gas drilling in my state, I'm definitely against what's going on in Alberta.
