  • they are in mason jars with a net over the top so they can get air without being able to fly away. but I'm scared they aren't getting the right light/dark cycle or that they wont have anywhere to hang and dry their wings... im new at this. .. also just caught a giant swallowtail caterpillar and another manduca sexta caterpillar. don't know as much about the swallowtail but I really want that one to mature.

  • @thedonbitch Give them some sticks to climb on in the jar when they come out of the soil.

  • I have them outside but they are under my carport so they can get light during the day and darkness at night but they never are exposed to direct sunlight, should I bring them inside and put them under a fluorescent light or put them under direct sunlight/darkness cycles or will they be fine where they are? also do they need to be completely submerged under the soil or need their abdomen sticking out to breathe or what? if you are not sure I understand haha this is over my head.

  • @thedonbitch They buried themselves, right? They can get themselves out. There is enough oxygen in the dirt for them as long as the soil isn't too compacted. They will emerge on their own as long as it isn't too cold, otherwise they can enter diapause (sorta like hibernation) while in the pupal case. The only reason I put mine under a light indoors was to give them some gentle heat (my temp indoors was about 72 F). If they are in your carport won't they crawl/fly away? What is the avg temp?

  • I'm waiting for 4 to 6 pupae to emerge as adults as we speak. can't wait! thanks for sharing

  • @thedonbitch Give them a little light and heat (flourescent light is fine, incandescent is too much heat) so they know to come out of the soil. DEFINITELY give them something to grab onto to let them hang and inflate their wings, otherwise you will end up with a lame moth like I did! Take some video too~! Thanks for the comment
