  • I love this song. I saw this band play at a bar parking lot somewhere on 7th St. when I lived in Charlotte,NC back in '99 or '00 not sure. Love their REMish sound.

  • @MrGenXer 2000 oyster fest in downtown charlotte

  • This was a great song for them. I know most of them being from Charlotte NC. You're correct about the REM comparisons; their earlier incarnation, Hardsoul Poets did a lot of REM covers when they were students at Wingate. They opened for the band I played in once... They certainly evolved past that stage though...

  • I saw these guys support Hootie at Cambridge Corn Exchange in 1998! I had a CD but have lost it!!!!!!! Loved two sisters and a laureate!

  • @TheDSB1979 Ha no way, i saw them on the same tour @ the Wolverhampton Cicic, i bought the CD of Into the Gleaming on the basis of that!!

  • the 90s was when music seriously started to suck, the beginning of the end. but there are always exceptions. Jolene was definitely an exception, one of only a few. they had been compared to REM, but these guys had so much more depth and better chops all around. i got a promo of Gloaming when i worked in a record store back then. don't know what happnd 2 it, wish i had it! Jolene came to my town (Chicago) and people dug 'em! finally heard Birdland last night. what ever happnd to these guys?

  • I miss Jolene so much! Too bad their label didn't follow through on their promises to them...they could have (and should have) been a big deal!

  • Love to hear their song Star Town on here too!!.

  • brings back some serious memories

  • @erik1whitmore yes it does back in the 90's i miss those days so bad

  • does anyone have an mp3 of the acoustic version of this song? I heard it on the radio a few night and I'm jonesing for a copy of it.

  • Ahhh... I just rediscovered this song in my mind while planning a trip to Florida. Hey Toribjork10! Crazy seeing you here :) This is one of my favorite songs ever. Seriously. I have two copies of In the Gloaming just for this song. Miss The End when they were good. Weenie Roast was always awesome!

  • i have a fan cd from Way back in 98 / 99 they were touring with marcy's playground got to meet them in this tiny shit hole bar in grandrapids. they were Fabulous. they got stuck on a michigan winter day and recorded at a radio stattion and sent this to fans from that show. i have always loved their music :)

  • Excellent song! Anyone have it on mp3 or a comparable format? I would love to have it. I only have a live version of the song. I'd gladly trade.

  • great song.i remember one of the radio dj's here in charlotte is related to someone in the band.

  • I saw these guys in the UK supporting Hootie & the Blowfish in about 1998. They were excellent, i bought Into the Gleaming on the strength of that, this is a class song.

  • yeah Mike the bass player is her brother... I think he moved to New York last time I talked to him--- bout 4 years ago

  • god this reminds me of being 13 and listening to WEND way way way back when.

  • I'm in Hawaii now, but same memory! Wasn't the guitarist Kristen's brother? Geez its been years since I've been to Charlotte!

  • yeah i think so. crazy that we remember dj names from 106.5...

  • saw these guys live in SC in like '98, great song

  • Epic song. Love it.

  • got into them after seing them at mercury theater on Hell's Half Acre tour.

    great album, btw

  • Love their songs, only heard two, this one and "even tempered" from their Antic Oceans CD. I looked forever for that CD and could never find it.

  • This is the most underrated band of the 90s. In the Gloaming should have sent this band straight to the top, instead their label let them fizzle out.

  • Love Joelene and John Crooke. We have all there cd's even a tape when they were the hard soul poets.

  • Are these guys even alive now? I remember this song from the 90s and then they were swallowed by a black hole or something.

  • They are still playing and recording just not as Jolene. John performs in a cool band called Lamps with longtime collaborator Vicki Peterson (Who co-wrote this song). Sea of Cortez is a side project of other members.

Still a Jolene reunion show is overdue at this point.

  • Wow, thanks a lot. You're like a VH1 Behind The Music lol.

  • love this.. heard them live back in the 90's at a weenie roast in charlotte nc, loved them every since. one of my fav songs on my mp3 player.

  • Great great great song!

  • Anyone know how to contact the band? I'm trying to find out what the hell Esseola 181 is significant for. I want to name a Pale Ale after it.

  • Esseola Lodge up near Banner Elk. Pensacola is a little community near there. John's family used to have a place near Linville, NC

  • I have this (and all the other Jolene cd's) so send me your email and I'll get a copy to you.

  • this offer still good? I've been trying to track down a copy of In the gloaming for ages!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT! Anyone have an mp3 please email me.

  • What is your email?

I might be able to go one better and find you the whole album.

There are a couple of places around town that carry local artists and if I can find the album I'd gladly get it for you. Send me your email.

  • I never got back to you, I humbly apologize.

If you still need the cd, let me know.

  • I haven't heard this song in so long.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
