Lee buried the letter, but word got out and Cleburne was never promoted again. That means the only legal basis, you say, for Abe's calling for 5000 militia per state (incl. the south!!) and launching the largest war in history at that time, was the SC militia (mainly Citadel cadets) firing on a fort in Charleston harbor where no one died. There was no CSA then, only SC. SC had seceded but Lincoln would not talk about SC paying for fed property in SC, and then he re-provisioned the damn fort ignoring the legal secession.

Lee buried the letter, but word got out and Cleburne was never promoted again. He died in battle several years later at the same rank, despite being repeatedly praised by Lee as one of his bravest and best commanders- blacklisted for wanting to free black men. But THAT was the confederacy.

His brigade commanders were all recognized as above average - a testament to his management skills. There is a story in Foote's history about how, just before Franklin Cleburn passed by an open grave, jumped in, and remarked 'this would suit me'. Thank you for agreeing that secession was/is legal. That means the only legal basis, you say, for Abe's calling for 5000 militia per state (incl. the south!!) and launching the largest war in history at that time, was the SC militia (mainly Citadel cadets) firing on a fort in Charleston harbor where no one died. There was no CSA then, only SC. SC had seceded but Lincoln would not talk about SC paying for fed property in SC, and then he re-provisioned the damn fort ignoring the legal secession.

You see, Abe didn't accept secession as a concept as you claim to. He called it rebellion. SC, in Abe's view, was in rebellion when they voted to secede, well before firing on Sumter. I'm telling you neither SC nor any other state would've been allowed to leave the union regardless of Sumter. Secession was seen as violating the union.

The South used Blacks in their army way before the Union. In fact free blacks volunteered to fight for the Confederacy before the war even began, for example the 1st Louisiana Guards. You stated that Lincoln out foxed Davis by enlisting black soldiers?? Lincoln had to be persuaded by Frederick Douglas. Remember Lincoln's answer was" no" on more then one occasion.

Actually the emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in the states still in confederate control, i.e. where it couldnt be enforced. So really it had no effect. It was written in hopes of starting a slave rebellion against the South. Didn't work, maybe a lesson in there somewhere? Even Lincoln said the document "Didn't mean much." Please learn your history people. The War was not about race or slavery. It was about Government. Deo Vindice.
