  • What a way to fuck up another Lovecraft masterpiece! Good goin!

  • god the acting sucks. if you cant do it properly. dont do it at all. stop fucking up Lovecraft's stories!

  • Fucked up second great H.P. story. Bravo, you're just like other great filmmaker, mr Boll.

  • Interesting concept, but I can't take those tacky titles.

  • why are they driving on the left side in the US

  • @TheEmperorCho They're driving on the right side of the road. They are in a 1929 Rolls Royce that with the steering wheel on the right.

  • I almost wish this was silent like Call of Cthulhu, then again since it's not really a horror per say, it doesn't need the silent touch. Nevertheless this looks true to the story and pretty fun!

  • 1931?

  • Their first film was The Call of Cthulhu- B&W and silent.

Now The Whisperer in Darkness- B&W and a talkie.

Next they need to do The Colour Out of Space- a colorized talkie.

They can shoot in B&W and only use color for the Colour and those tainted by it.

  • @haplo781

Well, considering they've started selling "Die Farbe" DVDs, they should do another of Lovecraft's stories instead. I'd like to see "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" myself. Plus, it'd round things off nicely. First they did "Call" which is a sort of supernatural Horror. Then "Whisperer", which is more explicetly SciFi. "Dream-Quest" would cover the Epic Fantasy portion of Lovecraft's writings. Plus, it has Ghoul-Pickman and NYARLATHOTEP!! What's not to love!? ^_^

  • I don't remember any action sequences in the original story. Where there any?

  • Ayer tuve la suerte de asistir en el festival de cine fantástico de Rio a esta película sensacional que recomiendo a todos los amantes del género. La recreación del universo de Lovecraft es excepcional!!!

  • I have red the book before 1h... (spoilers follow) I thought that the success of the book is based on the climate that is created by the nonknowledge of the reader. You dont know if the creatures exist, if they are honest... you think that the situation is fucking irrational and sees that the protagonist does the worst thing. I think you cannot create such an atmosphere with a film... you cannot present the situations as they were written in a book - a man receiving letters isnt that interesting

  • Can't wait

  • Another black and white? I didn't like the last one they made tbh. Hopefully this one is better. IMO the best Lovecraft adaptation isn't a movie, it's Call of Cthulhu the game. Real talk. Go play that and forgot all the bad movies. I've seen them all, not one comes even close to being as amazing as the game.

  • dude, I suppose lovecraft fans worldwide just deserve a work like this one!

thank you for making this dream! when will we be able to buy it?

  • Some scenes from this trailer seem to keep the original story and essence, but some scarcely look alike the novel; new characters in the "cult", external source of motivation for Wilmarth, etc

  • Take my money now.

  • I like the horror-noir style

  • It's like Schindlers list........only happy.

  • Wow! Congratulations on this, it looks absolutely perfect. I'm buying this badboy for sure, you guys are brilliant.

  • where can I find the HPLHS movies? They seem much more similar to HPL script.Since nowadays those few HPL movies had been whole different from the original, honestly bad movies.

  • Thoroughly enjoyed the Call of Cthulu by the HPLHS. Looking forward to this.

  • There's a poster in the 'Crest' Theater in Westwood. does this mean the film will be released in theaters?

  • we are all doomed!!!

(if the DVD doesn't come out quickly)!!!

  • This looks awesome. I'm ashamed I haven't read that story yet.

  • Had the unexpected pleasure of seeing this at Imagine in Amsterdam yesterday. I'd seen the teaser a while back, thinking I'd sadly probably never get to see the final product and forgot about it. So glad I got to see it, absolutely great!

  • Saw it yesterday @ the Imagine Film Fest. in Amsterdam, loved it.

  • Is this filmed in Brattleboro, VT?

  • I know that we're suppost to support it based on the fact that it's HPLHS, but honestly the acting looks painfully bad, the visual quality is poor, and the entire thing looks incredibly cheesy--not elegantly disturbing as Lovecraft should be. I DO want a big budget Lovecraft film, because we've never gotten one. We've never gotten one with the budget necessary to bring Lovecraft's epic alien vistas to life.

  • 1:51 THIS IS SPARTA

  • Based on this brief glimpse it deviates largely from the (best) Lovecraft story. Still fun.

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • When is this coming out on DVD? I'm buying this when it comes out.

  • @DWNicolo We are still working on distribution terms and a schedule, so we can't give you a date yet. Its unlikely to be generally available before the fall.

  • @DWNicolo It is out and available now.

  • I watched it today and very much liked :) A number of things have changed but I did not mind, given that it's a movie adaptation. The director had a vision and it worked well all things considered but I did not like was how the first part was shortened. Granted that the beginning in the book was rather slow but the gradual immersion was flawless, it built up the tension masterfully. I applaud the creative freedom in the ending, good job guys!

Ps the Akeley scene was amazing.

  • Fantastic! That looks great.

  • I can not wait for October 1931.

  • i need to get my library to obtain copies of both. am about to watch the unedited version of Stuart Gordon's "Dagon," which i only ever saw part of on cable once. cheesy, but i like the fish chick.

  • Haven't seen any blog updates recently, wondering what the status is is all ... :D Keep up the awesome work HPLHS!!!! and Thanks!!!

  • @artao5 You should be hearing significant news in the next couple of days.

  • Masterful job. You have captured the essence of Lovecraft with the black and white imagery, the historical authenticity, the soundtrack, and the overall ominous mood. I can't imagine a better film adaptation of Lovecraft's work. Would love to see you tackle the Dark Brotherhood next , with scenes on Benefit Street and the Providence Athenaeum.

  • On the poster in the back it says "David Bradbury". lol. Is that a hint to Ray Bradbury? When is this properly done Lovecraft story going to be out on dvd for the ordinary Lovecraftians?

  • i am impressed. call of cthulhu was good , and very true to the source material, this looks like it's gonna be even better. love the film noir approach. hplhs makes the best hpl films, true labors of love. it would be great to see what you guys can do with the color out of time and shadow over innsmouth. what is the position of the hplhs in regards to guillermo del toro's at the mountains of madness project?

  • cool

  • So, 1931? Is that 2011 in real world time?

  • I just finished watching call of cthulhu, went to the HPLHS site, saw that this trailer was on youtube. omg!! i've got goosebumps i can NOT wait!!! :D

  • awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome... and I forgot what else I was gonna say... oh yes, awesome awesome AWESOME. The fan film "Call of Cthulhu" was a dark masterpiece, and Whisperer (always my favourite Lovecraft story) looks like yet another Lovecraft fan production that is gonna leave Hollywood's embarrassing crapfests in the dust.

  • Added characters or not, it looks great to me.The cinematography and performances look like they evoke the feelings of cosmic dread and madness that Lovecraft conveyed so well. Loved the same team's CALL OF CTHULHU.

  • i loved call of cthulhu and i'm excited to see this one but added characters and scenes ? the hamfistedness of "let me whisper it to you" ? an AIRPLANE ? i guess i'm a little disappointed they would feel the need to add/change elements of this story like this.

  • Когда его можно будет скачать?

  • gotta see it, one of my favorite lovecraft stories

  • I had just got done watching Call of Cthulhu. I got to say, I love what you guys are doing. I hope you keep making more movie adaptations of Lovecraft's work.

  • @DanimalKingdom Have you seen this movie?

  • @shoggothsean i have not, and before you say that i shouldn't judge a book by its cover, one should be able to judge a film by its trailer; that's the point of the trailer. You're not bowing to the demands of a studio so I assume that this trailer is exactly what you and your group intended.

I can understand the whole 20s schtick, and it's totally admirable that you've put so much effort into this, but since you obviously know your mythos, wouldn't you want to make a really good horror film?

  • @DanimalKingdom I don't agree about the movie. Give it a chance.

  • @DanimalKingdom How would you do it then? I'd just add a bit more grain to the picture. But these guys release better versions of Lovecraft stories than the other guys. Please tell me what you abhor about their effort? If you want to see a cheesy Lovecraft effort try "Beyond The Wall Of Sleep" or Herbert West: Re-animator. I believe you can find the trailer's here on you tube. The dvd is easily accessible at Amazon or any big place that sells dvd's.

  • @DanimalKingdom For Herbert West- Re-animator, a reanimated penis at the end is about the worst thing you can do to a Lovecraft story. You just might as well take his story and drop it in a paper shredder.

  • @DanimalKingdom People like you don't know why Nosferatu is the scariest vampire movie. The HPLHS has made THE BEST Lovecraft based films. The black and white, early film style is the reason why it's going to be great.

  • @DanimalKingdom Opinions like this are why most younger people don't watch the classics. The black and white, early film style is the reason this movie will be great. The HPLHS has made THE BEST Lovecraft based movies.

  • @DanimalKingdom I agree with this, judging by the trailer. Maybe the hammy camp moments are mostly relegated to the footage in the trailer but it's still an unnecessary representation of 30s, 40s and 50s cinema. Their first outing, "The Call of Cthulhu", was largely devoid of camp/ham, but that may have been due to the fact that it was a silent film. I realize that they're probably trying to capture the spirit of film at the time these stories were written but I don't think it serves the work.

  • @DanimalKingdom indeed

  • Good as it looks, why would you add characters?

  • This looks amazing. I loved your Call of Cthulhu and it looks like you managed to top that. Can't wait to see this on the big screen!

  • Just...so....AWESOME :D!!!!

  • i just want 2 say that you first movie was exellent i cant wait for this 1.with love and respect from copenhagen

  • I think you should do 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' as a film!

  • This looks amazing... Are you guys the same that did the 2008 Call of Cthulhu silent movie?? Somehow I looked for it for a very long time when I finally got it, and it is a true masterpiece!!

  • @PsycoCruser Yes, we're the same guys. We hope you'll enjoy Whisperer just as much.

  • @shoggothsean Ever think of doing The Shunned House or The Shadow Out Of Time or a few short films like Beyond The Wall Of Sleep, Music of Eric Zahn, etc?

  • OMG!!!! I can't wait to see this! You guys did a great job with "Call of Cthulhu" and this looks even BETTER! I doubt it's be shown anywhere near where I live, but as soon as it comes out on DVD, I'm buying it.

  • wow... 0.0 i just got into this, so i really dont know any of this kind of stuff. none-the-less, i really want to see it!!!

  • I just watched you Call of Cthulhu and I'll just say I can't wait to watch this one. Keep at it bois :)

  • 2 clawed and winged arthropod alien creatures disliked this!

  • Is that Ray Bradbury

  • This is great! The Whisperer in Darkness is one of my favorite Lovecraft stories.

  • Yeaaah! In your face, Paranormal Activity 2! The HPL Historicals made a scarier film (again) then whatever the devil young people these days think is scary.

  • Awesome! I love my copy of Call of Cthulhu, and I look forward even more to this movie! :)

  • Please, please, please, please tell me this is going to be at Alamo Drafthouse in Austin at some point!! This is just phenominal work!

  • I want to see it! But how will I? Is this going to be at film festivals only, or a DVD release, or something online? I just recently discovered this project, so forgive me if the release plan has been revealed previously.

  • @coyoterunner Initially it will go to festivals, but we're hoping to get as broad a distribution as we can. Eventually it will certainly be available on DVD and BluRay.

  • @shoggothsean

I am one tht wants it pubicaly shown. I thought At the Mountains of Maddnes what the HPL film?

  • wonderful! when will it be released?

  • @FangedRabbit It takes a certain level of intelligence to watch a movie not based on effects.

  • I am still eagerly awaiting the release of this next installment of HPLHS' work.

It's up there with my addiction to HBO historical dramas.

  • This looks amazing, I can't wait for the release. I'm also wondering if you plan on doing any more stories for Dark Adventure Radio Theatre series.

  • @glory777 Thanks for the kind words. The overall plan includes four more Dark Adventure Radio Theatre Shows after Whisperer is out.

  • I love black and white horror movies. Great to see I'm not alone.

Man I'd love to see this. :3

  • Im looking forward to this one. Do you have any ideas for what Lovecraft stories you will base future movies on? I see a lot of people have suggested stories in the comments, and I've gotta say Shadow over Innsmouth sounds like somthing that could be really good withouth blowing up your budget. But do you have any special ideas for future project?

  • @sickninjamonkey We haven't committed to any major new projects until this one is really done. That said, we are batting around a couple of ideas for what could be next. Innsmouth is a good one, but it would take some money to do it right.

  • @shoggothsean Well that's understandable. Im looking forward to this one, anyway.

  • at last someone has finally cracked LOVECRAFT-the big budgets and CGI of HOLLYWOOD couldn't do it-it took those with sympathy for the material to pull this particular SHOGGOTH outta the hat!

  • Looks awesome. How big was the budget?

  • @nobbyskypekiller We should have a new trailer soon which we'll debut at the Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland. In staying true to the period, we made Whisperer with roughly the same budget used to make the original Frankenstein. Of course, they used 1931 dollars....

  • I want to see this so much.

  • I came buckets.

  • any new info about when this comes out= or is it on hp lovecraft historian site--forget the exact name- look forward to it.

  • @BaptismOfMoonlight You can find more info at our website. Look up the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. It should be available sometime next year.

  • Man I can't wait for this. HPLHS need to make more of these films, srsly. Shadow Over Innsmouth next yy?

  • @nerezzatube Yes! Shadow Over Innsmouth is Lovecraft's best story! I really hope they'll make a movie someday, faithful to the original story!

  • @DemonSkullStudios

have you seen stuart gordon's dagon? it's based on the shadow over innsmouth..

  • @DemonSkullStudios

    Dagon trailer..

    watch?v=-yAnVNy27co

  • @relgstorm I've seen Dagon and I really like Stuart Gordon's movies. But when I mentioned a movie about Shaddow over Innsmouth, I ment a faithful to the story movie, with the actual locations, date etc.

  • @DemonSkullStudios

i was just trying to help. dagon is probably the best lovecraft adaption that has become a major movie, at least in my opinion. there's not really a whole lot that happens in the story that wasn't in the movie.. the old one's don't care what time period and setting they return to earth! heh. until someone makes another version, it's all you got. have you played the game 'dark corners of the earth'? it's based on innsmouth and you get to explore the marsh refinery..

  • Is there an official site for buying the movies on dvd?

  • @sk8eradu You should be able to get it for sure from us, the HP Lovecraft Historical Society

  • Will this also be available on NETFLIX? - So I can watch it with my friends? As I do not let my friends borrow my DvDs and such? We usually get together and watch "Lovecraftian horror films" at ones house

  • @EastKingdomMilitia There is a lot still to be determined with regards to the distribution of Whisperer. However, Call of Cthulhu is on Netflix and I anticipate it is likely that Whisperer will eventually end up there too. It may take a while though before it's released in the space. We hope you and your friends will dig it.

  • @shoggothsean We always dig it, I just dont allow my friends to use my discs cause they come back broken in half or scratched up... Perhaps there shoggoths are getting at them...

  • looks really good for the restricted budget! I look forward to seeing it!

  • Tremendous, Sean!

  • That looks awesome and I loved the "Call of Cthulhu" adaption from you guys very much. Any chance that "Whisperer" will also be released on Blu-ray? That would be a instant buy for me!

  • @DaiShuryou As The Whisperer in Darkness was shot in HD, we anticipate releasing it on both DVD and BluRay.

  • Branney, this looks BAD-ASS. Can't wait.

  • This may be a silly question, but why didn't you shoot on 35 or 16mm b&w?

  • @Kitsaplorax It's drastically more expensive to shoot on film than on HD video. We're able to get a very film-like look from this camera without having to bear the cost of film stock, lab processing, telecine, etc...

  • Excellent trailer, very atmospheric. Can't wait to see the actual film this fall.

  • I found a site that lets you stream this movie for free its called Yslides

  • Magic! I didn't think that much of "Call of Cthulu" but this looks brilliant!

  • When will it be released?

  • was this shot on film?

  • @sonne5 Whisperer was shot on HD video. The magic of Mythoscope helps give the footage a more filmic look.

  • @shoggothsean HD video? Awesome. I'm trying to put together a film myself for HD, but don't have the funds yet. Whatever you're doing, you seem to be doing it right. It's light very well, good audio, seems to be well-acted. If this is released on Netflix, I will definietly rent it. If not (and if it's cheap enough, cause I'm poor), maybe I'll even buy a copy. The trailer looks amazing. The other one (that's more like a clip of the movie), is freakin creepy!

  • Super !!!!!

  • are the Mi go's going to look scary

  • WOW this looks amazing is it real?

  • @JthenH YES.

  • @shoggothsean Cannot wait.

  • @JthenH You betcha! They've also done one of Call of Cthulhu which is TREMENDOUS!

  • @memoriesofhpl Can't wait, any idea of the progress of this one?

  • Loved the Shadow Over Innsmouth radio drama.

This looks like a must have!

  • Really nice work :-) Can't wait to see it. And btw. Me and my buddies loved "The Call of Cthulhu" and we all agree that your decision to make it a black/white silent movie was the only good way to do that adaption. But we are excited to see what you can do with a fully voiced movie. Keep up the good work :-)

  • "I think you'll find time runs differently around here..." It's going to be a great film. HPLHS know what they're doing. Thanks for doing this for all of the fans.

  • Can't wait to see this one!

  • Words cannot express how excited I am for this.

  • I love all of the radio dramas and the Call of Cthulu movie, I cant wait to see this.

  • Must have!

  • Like Sunjammer, I really hope something is done with the image and sound to make it seem older and more "right".

  • Recently bought a whisperer investors shirt, all of you radio dramas and the call of cthulu movie were very good. Cant wait to see this.

  • Good stuff Sean.

It seems like I'll soon have to place another sizeable order to you guys!

  • @Lonkka665 Yay! We appreciate it. We're getting closer and closer to being done.

  • Is there anyway to get on a mailing list for this... I'll be first in line to buy this.. even if I have to resort to Elder Sign!

Its about time someone can make a decent Lovecaraft movie.. and "Call of Cthulhu" was amazing.

  • Mi-Go to see this movie.

  • @bdunaway

    rofl, nice one=)

  • I know it's way too early, but i assume Mythoscope is not in full effect yet; The image and sound quality is perhaps a little too clean still; I get a desaturated DV image feel from it. Film grain and some sound work would work wonders.

As excited as ever. This is a killer team of creatives.

  • Ok so I should go to the film festival or cthulhu con because it's actually near where I live and I don't have to travel across the country xD

  • Beautifully done...just wonderful! Must see it.

  • Very much excited for this. I really dug the Call of Cthulhu and I look forward to adding this to my collection.

  • we never rest

  • CTHULHU Was Great, This Looks Amazing !!!

  • this is going to be absolutely amazing, you guys are doing something truly your own, i love it

good to see the real horror and mystery of lovecraft playing out so perfectly on the screen!

  • This looks seriously amazing! And if the HPLHS is taking votes for their next movies...mine is cast for either "At the Mountains of Madness", or "The Dunwich Horror". ;)

  • This looks seriously amazing!

  • I hope it will be available at Cthulhucon :)

  • You have to do Color Out of Space but you've got to play it more straight. Both WitD and CoC feel like parodies. Otherwise, top marks.

  • I don't know, there's a lot of snow in the antarctic. Superimposing some guys onto a matte painting of a cyclopean city would be relatively easy with all the white space. XD

  • How do these guys distribute their movies? As files on disc, or as genuine DVDs? I would order one, but if its encoded as region 1 I wouldn't be able to play it.

  • Our earlier movies are available as Region 0 DVDs, available from either the HP Lovecraft Historical Society or retail establishments worldwide. We anticipate the same for Whisperer. The Call of Cthulhu DVD has translations in 24 languages and Whisperer will also be subtitled into many languages.

  • @shoggothsean Awesome. Thanks! :D

  • @shoggothsean

I can do polish translation if you wish.

  • @kopiart

Thank you for your kind offer. I'm pleased to say that the Polish translation is already done. We hope you'll enjoying seeing Whisperer in Polish.

  • @kopiart AWESOME!!! I am from Poland and "Whisperer in Darkness" is my favourite Lovecraft's story ;]

  • @EvilMuppet1979 Call of Cthulhu is currently streaming on Netflix as well.

  • bloody awesome!!!!!!

  • FINALLY!! Someone does Lovecraft justice!

This company presents the best horror films to date.

Hurry up and get this out.

  • Mountains of Madness might be too expensive: all that cyclopian architecture. I would go Shadow over Insmouth (being VERY careful to keep the fishy people out of sight until the last possible moment and making them NASTY).

  • @steerpike66 Actually there's a movie about that, is called "Dagon", I haven't seen yet but of what I have seen of it, it looks pretty good, check it out.

  • @gpalmamrw Don't. I saw it and it's heavily modified from the original work. H.P. Lovecrafts works are best when they are kept on this level. This film style amplifies the macbre feel that the stories strive to create. To much modern effects and camera work only dilute and waterdown the horrific experiance that his tales induce. In short, it takes away that which we were drawn to.

  • MUST HAVE FILM NOW!

'Call of Cthulhu' was brilliant: someone finally realised how to play Lovecraft so that it works: absolutely stone-cold serious but with a heightened dramatic sense....GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM!

Have we got a solid release date yet?
