  • @Junglerythm Definitely the Cherry Poppin' Daddies recording. Saw 'em live a couple of times and they were great.

  • Although the Cherry Poppin' Daddies did not write the song...it is a song about the zoot suit riots in California in WWII...their version is the best I've ever heard. Sorry they and swing music faded off of the music scene.

  • @dbowie007 Nope, CPD (originally) wrote this song. There have been other songs on the same topic, but this one - music, lyrics - are all their own.

  • YES

  • 7 people don't know what a zoot suit is.

  • This song makes everyone feel cool

  • 7 people were prohibition agents.

  • @malmalme16 is it a jazz arrangement? our band has a pep band version, id like it for jazz

  • @vikesthebomb i played it in jazz for middle school

  • @mopperson101 yes but our jazz plays college level music and i couldnt find an arrangment along the lines of grade four or five. your arrangement was grade 3 thats too easy for our band.

  • @vikesthebomb yea i figured, that was a long time ago in middle school , at least 4 or 5 years ago haha

  • This is awesome! I love it!!!

  • great song!!!!

  • Quick question people, im only 15, im not as expierienced as most of the people who listen to this song (meaning no disrespect) what is a zoot suit?

  • @personhater253 google zoot suit. If you're 15 you should know how to use a computer ;)

    but it's a "gangster" suit

  • @personhater253 basically it was a dress suit, almost like something you would see on a stereotypical "old-school Italian gangster".

The reason for the riots was this-these particular suits were often wide legged (lots of fabric) and during WWII people rationed (tried not to waste) fabric. The young men wearing them often were not soldiers and were dancing with the girlfriends of the soldiers/sailors when they were away at war. Thus they were attacked for appearing to be "unpatriotic".

  • @sportzriter13 There were also racial issues involved, right (or am I thinking of something else)?

  • @sportzriter13 that is actually not the reason at all for the start of the riots..lrn2readhistorybooks

  • Aw-reeeeeeet !

  • I've personally met the drummer. He came to my high school when the song was popular and taught the song to our jazz band.

  • @Junglerythm I did some searching and according to all sources the Cherry Poppin' Daddies originally recorded this song. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is often misinterpreted as the artist.

  • It's good to have a song that represents actual historical events. Sailors and Marines beating Chicano Youth

  • I just did a concert for this in the Junior Region Band, and our French Horn players were doing the "who's that whispering in the trees? It's two sailors and they're on leave

Pipes and chains and swingin' hands

I love finding songs from when I was little and it just bringing memories back!!! =))

  • lol this song was cool and then my dad killed it by playing this song on repeat for the entire trip and back. It was probably 16 hours total

  • I hate it when that happens :( Or when they play it non-stop on the radio.

  • Ah! Wow my dad did the same thing!

I used to have night-night drives when I couldn't sleep when I was little and I would always listen to stuff like this and Temple of the Dog.

  • I love this song! We play it in jazz band and it's sooo much fun!

  • Who's playing the lyrics? Trumpet, alto or trombone? We have a trumpet usually, but I asked to duet some of it on bone.

  • @Zangamarth

i think trumpet cuz that's the only i play it or have herd it played

  • In our piece, it's the trumpet. But, occasionally, the saxes or trombone get a lyric line.

  • Streetcars were halted while Mexicans, and some Filipinos and Negroes, were jerked from their seats, pushed into the streets and beaten with a sadistic frenzy." The local press lauded the attacks by the servicemen, describing the assaults as having a "cleansing effect" that were ridding Los Angeles of "miscreants" and "hoodlums." The LA City Council issued an ordinance banning the wearing of "zoot suits" after Councilman Nelson stated "The zoot suit has become a badge of hoodlumism".

  • Eyewitness to the attacks, journalist Carey McWilliams described the scene as follows "Marching through the streets of downtown Los Angeles, a mob of several thousand soldiers, sailors, and civilians, proceeded to beat up every zoot suiter they could find. Pushing its way into the important motion picture theaters, the mob ordered the management to turn on the house lights and then ran up and down the aisles dragging Mexicans out of their seats.

  • As the violence escalated over the ensuing days, thousands of servicemen joined the attacks, marching abreast down streets, entering bars and movie houses and assaulting any young Latino males they encountered. Although police accompanied the rioting servicemen they had orders not to arrest any of them. After several days more than 150 people had been injured and police had arrested more than 500 "Latinos" on charges from "rioting" to "vagrancy".[

  • On May 31, 1943, a group of white sailors on leave clashed with a group of young Latinos in the downtown area. One sailor, Joe Dacy Coleman, was stabbed in the melee. The violence escalated as around 200 sailors and Marines hired a fleet of cabs and drove into East Los Angeles to continue the clash with Mexican-American youths, specifically targeting young men dressed in Zoot Suits and calling themselves pachucos.

  • SWING BABY!!!!

  • contrabass sax lmao xD of course not

  • except that the first lyric is Satyrs, not Sailors. It was in their album. I read the lyrics from their cd case...I know. Though he does say the same line again in the song, and uses the word sailors. Trust me.
